thoughts on snk ch 84

I wrote this when it first came out, and I never posted it, but I just wanted these thoughts to be somewhere.

A lot of people are celebrating canon eruri, but this chapter was so much more than that.

Levi had to make the choice between Erwin and Armin, and he was hell bent on bringing Erwin back. But the deal-breaker for choosing Armin wasn’t his utility to humanity. As we can see in the flashbacks to only a few chapters ago, Erwin was a man that used his “dream” as a way to shackle himself to life. Levi commented that in a world like this, a dream was the only way one could find the courage to live. Armin, on the other hand, had no such shackles; he had a pure and earnest desire to see the ocean. In comparison, Erwin’s dream was, well, a shackle to life, so much so, that he didn’t even know what he would do with his life after finding the truth in the basement. 

Despite these differences, Levi STILL wanted to revive Erwin; after all, Erwin was one of the most important figures in his life. Levi respects and loves Erwin more than anyone else. However, as Levi was about to inject the serum, Erwin raised his arm. This certainly wasn’t a gesture of protest, and obviously he was just raising his hand in his dream; however, it is at this moment that Levi remembered what transpired with Erwin before the suicide mission. Levi told Erwin to throw away his dreams and die. At that moment, Erwin thanked Levi from the bottom of his heart. Erwin was no longer shackled by his dream. He was free, and upon realizing this, how could Levi force Erwin back into the Hell that is life, when this man finally felt free? 

Armin was indeed more deserving of this serum because of his intelligence and the fact that he had an earnest dream, but Levi made his decision out of pure emotion. He was letting Erwin rest, to finally be free, even though it meant letting go of the most important person in his life ;-;
