Bartimaeus fandom hello?? Are you guys still even alive

I'm planning to post a few of my old arts here (but idk actually)

Just finished rereading the first Bartimaeus book and yeah, yeah, I can see why I loved these books so much as a child :>

I feel like these illustrations aren't 100% faithful to the source material but maybe they're how Bart wished things happened, you know??

@faquarlofmycenae pointed out to me that, while in the trilogy most magicians tend to refer to Bartimaeus and other spirits using the dehumanising it/its (with the exception of Kitty, Ptol and eventually Nat), in RoS all the main human cast casually refers to Bart per his preferred he/him, even when he's not around to hear it: Solomon, Asmira, even Khaba (yeah, the bar is that low, guys.)

And I dunno, it might be because Jerusalem isn't made up of dicks like the British Empire, or because Asmira is a decent person and the other two lads are intimate enough with spirits to acknowledge them as intelligent beings and not just tools, or even it might be because Stroud just kinda forgot that magicians usually call spirits it/its when writing RoS, but either way I think it's kinda neat.

I’m sure it’s on purpose but a little thing that I think really humanizes the spirits is the way they call the Other Place home? There’s something so different between saying they want to go back to the Other Place and saying they want to go back home.

I think it’s especially obvious in Ptolemy’s Gate when Bart has been on earth too long, he says he’s tired and wants to go home and its just like GUYS. 🥺 LET HIM GO HOME 🥺 HE JUST WANTS TO GO HOME 🥺🥺🥺

And just how shocked and horrified he is over the other spirits burning their way back to the Other Place when he wants to know why any of them wouldn’t want to go back home and it just has me 🥺🥺🥺

Tbt that one poll asking who would be the worst sexyman if Bartimaeus were to reach a sizeable fandom or even a TV show and while I think Lovelace (young, canonically good-looking in a nerdy bookish sort of way and also evil), Verroq/the Mercenary (tall dark and handsome mysterious amoral assassin), Faquarl (protag's archenemy, either an octopus creature or possessing a human, knife guy, pretty funny) and even Ammet (tall shadow creature, gay, made for monsterfuckers) are totally plausible and good candidates

I think we are underestimating just how Honorius as an insane skeleton who was put through the meatgrinder and is pretty funny as well as murderous would probably be the most likely option on a website full of monsterfuckers that loves its chaotic neutral comedians

I have always been a fan of non-human characters going 'if anything happens to my favorite humans I will kill everyone in this room and then myself' but am Tormented by everyone else's fondness for interpreting those relationships as romantic. Sure, maybe sometimes, but often that's not even something these entities have a concept for. It's not romantic. It's not familial. The only label that matters here is "mine".

I'd already seen a drawing parodying it on Bart and Nat (how nice, twice! Thanks!) , but I wanted to draw it, so I drew it myself. This is Bart and Nat when they were captured by the police in Prague. Are the Prague police PCR?Haha. Well, this format suits them.

Blew some dust off my tablet and tried out CSP’s gouache brushes - by which I mean that I went full on beast mode while only having like 0.5 of an idea of what I’m doing. Still working on translating my style from traditional to digital, we’ll see how it goes.
