“The chill ascends from feet to knees, The fever sings in mental wires. If to be warmed, then I must freeze And quake in frigid purgatorial fires Of which the flame is roses, and the smoke is briars. The dripping blood our only drink, The bloody flesh our only food: In spite of which we like to think That we are sound, substantial flesh and blood– Again, in spite of that, we call this Friday good.”
— T.S. Eliot, from section III of “East Coker” from Four Quartets, in T.S. Eliot Collected Poems 1909-1962 (Faber and Faber, 2002), p. 189-190.

I know this will bother unhealed adults, but the real world, more often than not, does give you second chances and do overs. Very rarely are things set in stone. And people, especially young people, deserve to know that. Because lording the idea that they can never mess up, even once, does a lot more damage than good.

The radical distinction between all art (including drama) that offers a visible presentation and true literature is that it imposes one visible form. Literature works from mind to mind and is thus more progenitive. It is at once more universal and more poignantly particular. If it speaks of bread or wine or stone or tree, it appeals to the whole of these things, to their ideas; yet each hearer will give to them a peculiar personal embodiment in his imagination. Should the story say ‘he ate bread’, the dramatic producer or painter can only show ‘a piece of bread’ according to his taste or fancy, but the hearer of the story will think of bread in general and picture it in some form of his own. If a story says ‘he climbed a hill and saw a river in the valley below’, the illustrator may catch, or nearly catch, his own vision of such a scene; but every hearer of the words will have his own picture, and it will be made out of all the hills and rivers and dales he has ever seen, but specially out of The Hill, The River, The Valley which were for him the first embodiment of the word.
JRR Tolkien
This is something Tolkien wrote in the notes from On Fairy-Stories explaining his view of why fantasy stories are better left to books instead of plays and movies. I think it might be why he was so reticent about letting LOTR be made into a movie.
But, I think it captures one of the great joys of reading and imagination. I love movies and TV shows, but there is a unique magic found in reading a book, and I think this captures part of that magic.

I like the expression new-fangled. I don't know what it means for something to be fangled, but I sure as hell know it was recent

i'm so glad goncharov happened when it did, right before prolific public use of AI. that was pure honest gaslighting straight from the heart. real human whimsicality and trickery thru blood sweat and tears. we were a family. and we all gonched, together. you cant replicate that with any machine.

After the concert, the alien ambassador asked to meet the conductor.
"Such harmonies! This entity is aware of Humanity's warfilled history, but hearing a choir work together like this makes it hard to believe you can also hate."
"Had you been at rehearsals, you would believe."
