Remember the Muslim Americans lost to islamophobic violence this 9/11. Remember the civilians whose lives were destroyed by the United States’ cruel war campaigns in the Middle East. Remember those tortured and killed indiscriminately by United States troops, humiliated and violated for soldiers’ sick fun. Remember there is blood on our hands too. The violence we committed cannot be forgiven.

Hey, fellow Americans, try not to re-traumatize yourselves too much today. Thanks to the 20th anniversary programming on several of our tv channels that started as soon as fkn September did, it's been a daily trigger roulette because I can't help myself.
But especially today: take care. If you're gonna do it, don't be alone. Even if it's just on the phone or texting. Take meds if they're prescribed to you. Eat at least one good meal. Do a mindfulness exercise to put yourself in the present. And know when enough is enough and shut off the tv.
Re-living it won't change the outcome, but you're still here. We're all here with you. You'll be okay.

Somewhat ironically, I think possibly the most human story about 9/11 is the one about the tree they found in the rubble.
About thirty days or so after the attacks, as rescue workers were trying to clear the wreckage and find the bodies of the dead, they found this little tree branch sticking out, otherwise unremarkable...but it still had leaves. And do you know what they did?
They dug out this tree. They dug this burnt and blackened tree out of the pile, took it out of the city and re-planted it to give it a chance to survive. To grow back. Just because they saw these leaves. And by some miracle, it did, and ten years later they brought this now 30-foot-tall tree back to lower Manhattan to plant it in the memorial at ground zero. They brought the tree home.
And is that just not...the most human fucking thing? These guys saw this one thing in that pile that was still alive, and they said dammit, we're gonna save this little tree. We can't save anything else, but we're gonna save this tree. And they did.
Say what you want about people, but I truly believe we are good at heart.

“9/11 was a severe tragedy that shook america to the core and was such a devastating event that ruined not only the lives of the 3,000 people who died, but all of their family and friends” and “9/11 isnt an excuse to attack or treat muslims like shit as the majority of those who are muslim believe in non violence and peace and the actions of a few awful people isnt an accurate depiction of a whole community that contains millions of people” are two mindsets that can exist at once.

‘A black autistic enby who uses a wheelchair, breaks out often, and has divorced parents? That’s so impractical it’s the forced representation for me’. No, it’s not absurd or forced diversity, it’s realistic. I am a brown, Pansexual, and gender-fluid Muslim with diagnosed depression, anxiety, and ADD, has divorced parents and abusive family members, and have many physical ‘imperfections’ by society’s standards and I am one of the most normal people in my school. If you legitimately believe that a middle to first-class, straight, cisgender neurotypical person with perfect looks and a healthy family is the standard for real people and fictional characters, you desperately need to get a look into real life and real people. There are so many queer, neurodivergent, disabled, ‘unattractive’, and POC people that need to be represented in media, and not inaccurately or through hurtful stereotypes. Fix your straight/white supremacy and ableism bullshit, and then go read and write stories instead of dismissing the most realistic diversity and positive representation we have.

Holy shit. Just saw Shang-Chi and it is IT. Before getting into the Chinese cultural parts of it, I'd like to note that it had a solid plot and wonderfully developed characters. The worldbuilding and CGI and the relationship building was absolutely phenomenal and I was absolutely hooked. The fight choreography was THE best choreography I've ever seen in the entirety of the MCU and the cinematography is amazing.
Now, onto the Chinese cultural references.
My god. I've never felt so seen. As a Chinese woman living in a western diaspora I've genuinely never seen something that so genuinely felt right and that truly felt like it connected to me personally. There were so many little details that I could connect to that made me feel emotional because I've never had any media that connected to me this way. It was so well done and it was so obviously done by people who lived through it.
(minor) Spoilers ahead! Just small details about the Chinese Diaspora experience in the movie.
Some little details that stood out to me included:
The food! All the food shown on screen was Chinese food - be it homemade food or dim sum platters - and those were exactly the types of plates that I grew up eating.
When Shang-Chi took off his shoes to go into Katy's house and she was wearing slippers inside the house
When he was talking through the little Chinatown area and there were the fruit cardboard boxes outside the Chinese CL groceries and the white sketchy dim sum sign with English on top of the Chinese
Katy struggling with her Chinese as a diaspora kid because she's only a heritage speaker and her first language is english
When Katy was struggling to pronounce Shang-Chi's Chinese name asldhhdjskala I felt that
Katy sticking to her English name despite also having a Chinese name bc she's a diaspora kid and is used to using the English name
Every single one of the magical creatures inside Ta Lo were inspired by Chinese mythology.
THE DRAGON IS A PROPER CHINESE DRAGON
Katy's parents comparing her to others and asking her to "get a better job" with her H. B. from Berkeley (I felt that)
The whole thing about familial expectations and relationships in Chinese families?? Bro. I felt that. Holy shit.
So. Much. Mandarin. I can't explain how happy I am to hear that language. Many western movies have a tendency to mainly use English with an accent but this movie used a LOT of (accurate!) mando and it makes me so happy
The architecture?? The art?? Phenomenal. Amazing. So accurate.
The shrine to the mother and the other deceased looks EXACTLY like every single Chinese cemetery I've been to, down to the photos and the incense and the fruits and all the people paying tribute to it.
The martial arts?? Oh my god. So good. I recognize it. Having trained in it and having watched multiple family members practice varying Chinese martial arts over the years I can't express how fucking happy I was to see arts such as Tai Chi and Wing Chun and Wushu on screen. I could recognize it. The forms, the movements - I can't explain how, but it felt right. It felt familiar. It felt so wonderfully connected to me.
There's probably more but it's late at night so more to come later, maybe. I'm going to just bask in the fact that this was a fantastic movie for chinese representation and I felt so seen. I went to see it with several other Chinese friends and. We came away so happy. We felt seen. We felt heard. I can't express how much this meant to us.
Representation matters.
