Hi! I saw your ask to schizopositivity, and if this is incredibly unwanted feel free to just delete it.
I have schizophrenia & I found DBT to be miles more helpful for these traits than CBT.
If you can find a good DBT therapist and/or group, I highly recommend it. The hands on approach helped me learn how to cope with very specific issues I had, instead of just talking it out with someone who doesn’t really know how to help. DBT, imo, is all about learning to cope and it changed my life.
Wishing the best either way !
Wow, really? I hadn't thought about DBT for schizo-spec disorders. I know my therapist helps a lot of people with BPD, so she knows quite a bit about DBT. I could ask if we could do some more DBT skills.
Thank you so much!

Hey there, just needed to say something quick. ALL of this misrepresentation about schizophrenia everywhere is ableism. People that say “schizophrenia is spiritual”, “schizophrenia is satanic”, “schizophrenia is demonic”, “schizophrenia means that you have demonic entities attached to you”, “schizophrenia means that you are in spiritual warfare with demons”, “schizophrenia just means that you are going through a spiritual awakening” and all of these other theories (that’s what they are because they have no real evidence) are just so frustrating for people who ACTUALLY have this mental Illness or suffer from psychosis. It all comes from people who don’t even HAVE this illness or experience these things. It is dangerous to tell people who have or don’t have schizophrenia/ schizoaffective disorder, people who are on the schizo spectrum or people who experience psychosis that what they are experiencing is real and is caused from external forces or that they are just in a “spiritual awakening”. Stop spreading your theories on this mental illness and do some research, your ableism is showing. This goes to all of you new age spiritualists that say “people with schizophrenia just experience the world differently than us” No, we are suffering from psychosis/hallucinations or delusions. It is a mental illness, not what your theories of what schizophrenia may seem like to you. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. I’m not haunted or “woke” I’m mentally disabled. It is a mental illness PERIOD.

its funny whenever i explain visual snow syndrome to people irl they always ask "so youre seeing it right now?" like yes, i said i always see it so of course im seeing it right now. they also usually ask "how do i look with it?" like how you always look to me lmao, i cant not have visual snow so i cant tell you how you look with it vs without it, i have a filter of moving specs over my vision at all times, its all i know, you dont look "weird" unless you want to clasify literally everything i see as weird.

Unfortunately CBT and similar therapist have been proven ineffective for everyone, but they feel especially unhelpful for psychosis. It’s so frustrating that that’s all anyone has to offer.
Yeah, they just don't seem to care about schizo-spec and psychotic people enough to listen to what we want out of therapy 🙄
And about CBT, I recently watched this video that is a good example of why CBT is ultimately unhelpful for a lot of people, not just those of us dealing with psychosis.

Its so relieving to see someone else who doesn't find the CBT for psychosis helpful. I can't cope with being told my life as i experience it isnt real. Theres a lot of pressure just to say its working because its very hard to access where I live and I should feel lucky to get some help when others get none.
Yeah, CBT for psychosis feels like the therapist cares more about telling you something isn't real (in an invalidating way to people who experience it as real) rather than actually listening to us and helping us build up healthy coping skills to deal with our reality in everyday life.
I totally understand the pressure to pretend that a therapy is helpful when it isn't, but that really is a disservice to both you and the therapist. Obviously it means you aren't getting the care that you need, and feel like you have to lie to make the therapist feel better. Which defeats the purpose of it for you, you should feel heard, you should be leading the way in what kind of care you need, and you should feel comfortable enough to tell the truth to your therapist. The whole point is for you to get treatment, not for your therapist to feel like they are doing something right. And it isn't great for the therapist either because they learn from previous patients, so if they think CBT works for one patient with psychosis they'll be more inclined to use it again for someone else with psychosis. The therapist isn't actually learning or growing their perspective when it comes to what works for people with psychosis. It really doesn't benefit anyone to pretend that it does work. You deserve to be treated in a way that actually works for you, you deserve to be listened to and respected in your opinion on your own therapy. The therapy should ultimately benefit you specifically, because that's what therapy is for and you deserve that.

ok so you support the disabled, disordered, and mentally ill. but are you normal when someone takes long to respond to you? or if they have a hard time listening to you? when someone has a hard time giving you their attention? or when their manners aren’t perfect? or when someone makes mistakes that may be obvious or simple to you? or when someone talks loudly or “causes a scene?” are you normal when people have to think really hard to explain things? or when they have a hard time putting their thoughts into words?
are you normal when people’s hair is unkempt or oily or visibly unbrushed? or when their face might be full of acne? or when they don’t have deodorant on for one reason or another? how about if their clothes are dirty?
are you normal about disabled/disordered/mentally ill people when they make you a little uncomfortable?

Do therapists get special certification to be a therapist to somebody with a schizo-spec disorder? I'm schizoaffective and I keep trying to talk to my therapist about the psychosis I've been dealing with this past week, but instead of helping me get through it she always redirects me to another topic, and then by the end of the session I feel like I haven't been helped very much with what I needed.
Sadly there are no specific therapy methods for schizo-spec disorders or psychosis. And it is very rare to find a therapist who will claim to specialize in schizo-spec disorders or psychosis. Which I personally feel is a huge gap in mental health care.
Therapists tend to go for CBT when treating people like us (I'm pretty sure it's the recommended therapy). Which I personally am not a big fan of because it tends to lead to a lot of reality checking delusions and hallucinations, which I find to be ultimately unhelpful and kind of belittles the effect the symptoms have on their patients. I've told therapists that I wish they would try and help us cope with the psychosis, rather than just tell us it's not real. Which is not helpful at all if you experience it as being real.
I'm really sorry you're having to deal with this, you should feel comfortable with your therapist, and should be able to talk about anything you want. Your therapist should let you lead the way in your treatment. You could try to express these concerns to her, it's her job to listen to you and mold her treatment to what suits you best. If that doesn't solve anything, and you're able to, maybe you could switch therapists, although there's no guarantee the next one will be very helpful with your psychotic symptoms.
I'm sorry, I wish I could help more. But this is something I've struggled with in therapy myself. And it's a huge problem in therapy overall. I hope things improve if you bring these concerns up to her directly or switch therapists. And if you are too shy to tell your therapist face to face, you could probably email her.

ways a pet cat can help you deal with psychosis:
•if you see or hear something and dont know if its real or not, check if youre cat is reacting to it, something loud would make them look at it, someone intruding would startle them
•theyll make sure you get used to hearing random noises throughout the house, you can always check and see if they did it
•if tacticle hallucinations are bugging you, go over and pet your cat, they have such a nice real texture you can focus on
•some cats learn to come and comfort you when you need it most
•if nothing feels real, cuddle up to your cat, you can feel them breathing, feel their heartbeat, maybe feel them purring, thats real right there
•notice how your cat isnt judging you, they dont know or care that you are psychotic, they just see you as their owner and they love you

To schizospecs (who experience hallucinations) who have poor eyesight and wear glasses or contacts: Are your visual hallucinations blurry or blurry around the edges? I’m near sighted and my hallucinations are sometimes blurry or blurry around the edges, even when wearing my glasses.

Hey there 😊 just wanted to say a thing quick.. 💖
If someone has schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder or on the schizo spectrum, please do not say that they are gifted, that they’re clairaudient, telepathic or anything of that sort. I know you’re just trying to make sense of it all but please 💖✨don’t✨💖
It feeds into their hallucinations/delusions that they are experiencing and that is DANGEROUS to someone who is hallucinating *them already thinking that the voices are REAL, that they actually can read minds or that they are thought broadcasting and everyone can read their minds all while actually believing it to be real* and can lead to them thinking they have a gift and can lead to them putting themselves in danger by thinking that what they are being told while hallucinating is REAL because they “have a gift” or are “gifted”. I’ve been told this before early on when I was first diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder about 5 years ago I had to find out on my own with my diagnosis that not knowing what’s real and what is real is just apart of having this mental illness. We are not being haunted by demons or ghost’s, it is a mental illness just like anxiety or depression, and unfortunately we suffer from hallucinations, catatonia, depression, and labile affect(Inappropriate involuntary laughing and crying) amongst a lot more symptom’s, just like you take meds for anxiety and depression we also have to take medications, it is a mental illness and should be treated as such, with knowledge and treatment can help someone get clarity about their recovery and can help reduce their symptoms. Thank you for reading 💖✨😊

Not a day passes by without me being mad as shit that ableism against demonized mental illnesses is normalised.
We are not criminals. We are not dangerous. We do not owe neurotypicals a complete explanation on why we developed our disorders and why we aren't serial killers that kidnap people.
Fuck hollywood, fuck ableist criminology and fuck saneism.

Nobody ever bothers looking anything up about schizophrenia, even people with schizophrenic loved ones. I'm having a bad day of it today and my husband doesn't know what to do despite me begging for months for him to do research, because reading about this thing that affects every aspect of my life until the day I die is just "so stressful" to him. And I can't fix myself because I can't think. If I get additional medical trauma from being thrown in a psych ward, I... I guess I'll die. He already can't help me when I'm a little fuzzy. I'm so scared. He keeps saying he cares but I've been begging for months. I don't even know how to look up what could help. I don't even know how to look up what I'm experiencing right now. I can't help but think if he knew, he could help. But he just outright refuses.
I'm really sorry you're going through this. I think your husband should absolutely listen to you and do some research. Having schizophrenia is always more stressful and harder for the person experiencing it than the people around them. It would honestly be bare minimum for someone who claims to care about you to do some research into something you have to live with every day. There are so many resources out there for the loved one of people with schizophrenia, more than for the people with schizophrenia themselves. And I firmly believe it shouldn't be the responsibility of the person suffering to teach people around them how to help or even just care. He isn't the one experiencing it, he has the ability to do his own research, there is no excuse for him not to.
You deserve to be cared for and listened to. Having schizophrenia and having bad days because of it isn't your fault at all. You have every right to be upset. I wish I could do more to help, my dms are always open and you can talk to me if you want to.
