addisons are made with specific marketing products in mind.

spamton, being one of the first addisons, wasn't made with anything in mind, which is how he eventually got stuck with the email thing. he wasn't good at it, though. as such, he ended up working with his siblings more than he actually worked on his own stuff (since he...didn't make enough to support himself financially)
