Today, I was in an emergency “all hands on deck” meeting to prepare for how the nonprofit’s operations will need to shift in response to the worst case scenarios happen- on the front and in the cities. It feels good to be part of a team that is always trying to evolve as quickly, if not faster, than the conditions of war in Ukraine and stay on top of their shit to help as many people as we can, but the reality of everything we discussed is terrifying. I don’t feel like I’m qualified enough to be a part of these meetings, but here we are.
There will be a meeting with frontline defenders later this week to learn about the evolving battle conditions and technological landscape and hear it directly from them.
Without critical aid being sent now, it might be too late by the time it gets there. In the past 15 minutes I’ve been writing this, explosions are being reported in Eastern cities and villages. Kharkiv is suffering aerial attacks every day.
This collective trauma is ongoing, and hasn’t stopped for a single day in the past two years. Today we’re mourning the attacks from every day this past month. We’re mourning the attack on the Kramatorsk railway two years ago. It is almost the one year anniversary of a family member of mine being KIA in Bakhmut. This loss is personally painful, he was too young. My cousin is too young to be a widow, they should have had the rest of their lives together. I can’t mourn him without also remembering every fallen hero. Without seeing all the flags honoring fallen defenders in Kyiv square. Every flag representing one loss. Without thinking of every person who must feel the pain of their loss and absence for the rest of their lives. Without thinking of the injured defenders who are currently fighting for their lives. Four that work closely with our nonprofits are in that position right now. One was buried last week. Even though I haven’t met them personally, my heart is broken.
My cousin only 23 and she has lost absolutely everything. I never know what to say to her. We made plans to go somewhere remote to scream, cry, and mourn when we see each other again, because what else is there to do?
Even for Ukrainians who no longer live there, there’s no chance to heal. I myself haven’t been back to Ukraine in over 20 years, and every fucking day feels agonizing. “Heal” also feels like the wrong word to use. Is this a trauma anyone can recover from? Nothing can fill the void that has been left from everything and everyone we’ve lost.
The scariest thing about today for me is hearing how much worse things can get and how likely it is if Ukraine doesn’t get support NOW. I’m terrified and I’m worried.
But so is my family and everyone back home. Yet they don’t stop, they keep going every single day. I hate the word “resilient.” They shouldn’t have to be, but holy shit they are the most resilient humans I know. I don’t have an excuse to give up while I am living in the cozy cushy safety and privilege of the US, while they are doing everything they can to survive a literal hellscape and war zone. I feel like if I collapse and regress into the completely dysfunctional mess I was when this first began, I’ll be failing them. And I can’t live with myself if I do.
Sorry, this ended up being more of a stream of consciousness thing rather than a well-thought out post, but I’m trying my best. Excuse any typos or grammatical errors, I am very unwell right now.
I’m going to end this post as I end every post regarding Ukraine and beg you to help in any way you can.
PLEASE URGE YOUR GOVERNMENTS TO BE PRODUCTIVE EVERY DAY, anything short of this enables Russia and continues the unnecessary and perpetual loss of innocent lives.
IF YOU ARE IN THE US: please raise your voice for Ukraine every day by taking a few minutes to call your representatives and make sure they know what their constituents expect from them, and demand that Speaker of the House Mike Johnson bring Ukraine aid to the floor for a vote. Ask your representatives to bully Mike Johnson into doing something useful for once in his life (you can choose to word this more professionally ofc). Find your representatives here.
DONT RELY ON YOUR GOVERNMENTS TO DO THE ESSENTIAL WORK. It’s clear more than ever right now that there is no sense of urgency.
Donate to nonprofits, participate in local events, support Ukrainians in your communities. If you can’t find any fundraisers near you, organize one yourself! If you would like recommendations for nonprofits to donate proceeds to, I am happy to share a few recommendations. I will likely make a longer post dedicated to nonprofits specifically, but my top recommendations that I personally know and can vouch for are always:

Lastly, celebrate Ukraine. Our culture and our land is beautiful, and when Russians are trying to erase us off the face of the Earth, keep us alive literally, but in your hearts as well. Music, movies, folklore, food, everything!

- We saw women in Gaza using tent scraps in place of period products.
- We saw women in Gaza pulled out of the rubble of their homes.
- We saw women in Gaza rushing to the hospitals with the bodies of their children with the hope of saving them.
- We saw women in Gaza suffering miscarriages due to indiscriminate bombardment.
- We saw women in Gaza starving yet feeding their portions of food to their children.
- We saw women in Gaza coming out and communicating the trauma, horror and violence they went through.
- We saw Israeli soldiers celebrating with the lingerie of women of Gaza who were either displaced or killed by them.

despite my myriad of issues i have with russian opposition they dont usually shy away from calling the country they live in every day fascist, or condemning the war as an imperial conquest (even if it's very limp-dicked and isn't followed by any actual action that would prevent ukrainians from being murdered) but of course it's terminally online americans that know better and have an issue with these statements, it's comical. you have russians saying their country is turning into a full-fledged dictatorship and americans go nooo please dont listen to this nasty Western propaganda <33 its okay youre not doing anything wrong <3 please continue to ignore the war and exploitation of russia's east that your country has colonized <3 also the ethnic cleansings <3
