Steven Universe theory
Throughout Steven Universe, and especially in its recent episodes….one cut/lost eye has been prevalent in its imagery
we have 4 examples, yes 4. that i can think of. if you have any others let me know.

now this got me thinking…….one eye…. steven is half diamond, the diamonds eyes have been something important in the series, especially in Jungle Moon
it would be a logical conclusion that steven would at some point have diamond eyes, and that being a plot point. but since he’s half diamond. maybe one diamond eye……..maybe somehow, losing that eye? one last bit of imagery that backs this up.

“that dirt doesn’t care how green your thumb is”
a metaphor for peridot and lapis’ dysfunctional relationship
so this is something I’ve been mulling over since the episodes went up on the app. I feel like the ending of “back to the kindergaren wasn’t just a metaphor for peridot trying to move on from lapis, but also for their relationship itself.
we learned in “raising the barn” that peridot literally and figuratively bent over backwards to make sure that lapis was okay. she put lapis’ needs ahead of her own. she is constantly considering and tending to lapis’ needs:
“lapis was very agitated when she heard you were on homeworld. I was bending over backwards to make her feel better”
“maybe it’s good that we’ll be away from everything, where nothing can change. no surprises or developments, she’s been through so much, she needs consistency”
“sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to do. like, get jettisoned into space to live forever on a floating rock with a barn and ‘just us’ for as long as time exists. lapis needs us!” “we don’t have a choice in this”
not only that, but she feels like she can’t talk about things, because she’s scared of “upsetting” her.
“well. there are many things I should say, but they would upset you so in general I don’t say those things?”
considering lapis’ response was to yell at her for “lying”, I think that fear is not unfounded.
see, for all of the emotional labor peridot pored into their friendship, lapis didn’t really give anything back. this entire episode, she was dismissing peridot (and pumpkin). that is, when she wasn’t yelling at her.
peridot really cared about lapis and showed that by trying to make her happy. and lapis took that, and the most she ever really gave back was presence and humoring her if she felt like it.
it’s understandable that lapis was panicking. it’s understandable that she no longer feels safe and wants to leave. but she didn’t just leave. she took the barn with her.
the barn was peridot’s home first. she shared her home with her. she shared her art, her interests, everything, so that she would have a friend who understood what she was feeling and that she could help adjust to earth.
because I think this line from “back to the kindergarten” should be considered, when we talk about peridot:
“I was pretty much using this as a distraction from losing lapis, losing the barn, and just a general sense of complete hopelessness I tend to deal with on a day to day basis. but it really only confirmed for me that once you mess something up it’s ruined for good and nothing will ever be able to grow again.”
like I’ve said in my post about lapis’ trauma, lapis isn’t special. basically every character on this show is going through something. peridot lost her home too, she was so desperate to have lapis as a friend in the first place because she was another gem who could understand where she was coming from when she said that earth “didn’t exactly feel like home yet”. during gem drill, she teared up and said that it was hard not having feelings about where you came from.
and here, peridot more or less admits that she is depressed on a general day to day basis. she doesn’t show her feelings the way that other characters do, but that doesn’t mean that nothing’s wrong. peridot’s going through her own stuff too. that doesn’t change because she pushes them all to the side to comfort lapis who has “been through so much”.
the bottom line is, lapis has been through a lot, but peridot’s been through a lot too. it’s very sweet of peridot to be so concerned about lapis, but their relationship was unhealthy. peridot gave and lapis took, until lapis literally took everything from her and left.
in that sense the kindergarten soil is like their relationship. “that dirt doesn’t care how green your thumb is”. it didn’t matter how much peridot gave lapis, she can’t fix her, and their relationship won’t grow because lapis wasn’t going to give anything back to her.
now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that lapis doesn’t care, that she’ll die alone, or that her relationships are ruined forever. though that could be one way to interpret it, I don’t think that steven universe is that cynical. as a show about love and healing, I’m sure that there’s hope for lapis, and even for her relationship with peridot. but I don’t think that regrowing that relationship will be easy for her.
lapis’ problem is that she is selfish. the only thing she has been concerned about since day one is herself, and her self preservation. if she has any hope of having any kind of healthy relationship, she needs to think about someone else too. lapis is the one who will have to put in the work now if she wants to make things right.
“back to the kindergarten” ends with peridot seeing that even if she couldn’t do anything with the kindergarten, there’s still an entire world blooming all around her. she disregarded it at first, because it’s not what she had hoped and dreamed for. but it’s still there, and it’s still beautiful.
even if she wasn’t able to have the kind of relationship she wanted with lapis, life goes on. she was able to pull out of her depression because she saw that she had other people in her life who love her, support her, and want to see her happy.

this SU special literally changes everything I previously thought I knew about this show……Steven is actually Steven Diamond Universe……….The Trial was a family reunion……Jasper headbutted and kidnapped her own Diamond……..all the Quartz fusions (Smoky Quartz, Rainbow Quartz) are actually Diamond fusions………….it was actually Greg who killed Pink Diamond and he did it with not a sword but his dick…….
