Oh hey! Yeah, uhm so basically i was so blown away that you could tell such an interesting story and make the characters feel so powerful just at lvl.1

Like, to ME, lvls 1-3 have always been breezed through in just a few sessions because everyone wants their cool subclass abilities at lvl.3. but listening to WWWO made me rly realize that the journey really IS more important than the destination in a really meaningful way.

Like the s1 finale was the most heart wrenching piece of storytelling i might've heard Ever and That was going from lvl.1 to 2!

Like you can really make anything meaningful if you go in with that type of mindset and it has been just,, an interesting thought exercise of like,, How can i make this meaningful Now, not in three to ten levels, Now !

It's changed my view of dnd so completely I don't even know what to do anymore

They spent 14 whole episodes playing lvl 1 characters and made it So Intriguing. Every mechanic feels earned in the story and i just.. Am Obsessed

The Culture of the world feels real and nuanced and the Audio editing and Music is just.. too much it's too much *crying*

FUNGUARY IS HAPPENING AGAIN!!! February is right around the corner, which means it’s soon time for Funguary 2024! the drawing event where we draw a bunch of mushroom based characters during the month of feb. This will be our third year of Funguary, and this time it’s a leap year!

Here’s how it works: Each week of the month will have a theme with seven different prompts, draw a mushroom character within that theme in order to join. The themes are Celestial, Demonic, Edible and Cryptic. Each week of February is a new theme. You don’t have to complete all the prompts, just one mushroom per theme/week is plenty!

If you’re hardcore you can definitely try and finish all the prompts though ;). The challenge intensity is adjustable to what suits you. This is a chill event where the goal is to just have fun and vibe, and honor the fungi kingdom with some really cool art🍄

I invite you all to come draw mushrooms with me! Use the hashtag #Funguary and #funguary2024 when posting your creations. I’ll be posting some of the creations here, and I’ll also be hanging out in the hashtag and comment sections! Once I've measured and sketched it in full like I want it on a separate paper, i used the ye olde pencil transfer trick, which.. haven't used That one since before digital. WOW

Just to make sure the composition was where i wanted it, to avoid erasing and ruining my watercolour paper (bc erasing is a crime punishable by art law (joking) gjyky)

It doesn't need to be the Exact lines, it just needs to be clear enough to draw over

BUT THEN comes the dreaded question, right, like: " how do i make lineart not Stiff after working and reworking it sm times? " bc at this stage it Rly was looking more Blocky than flowy.

Answer i found:

I rly comes back to that early energy study for me, like: whichever direction the energy is going, that's where the 2d lines need to be going. It's rly that simple, but easy to forget

I had a Lot of fun w the fact that even the strands of caleb's beard and essek's ears follow this line of action XDD

The more you know i guess

I think i did most of that subconsiously after i noticed that it Worked, but i'll def keep it in mind going forward

Then i did colour. I dread it. I hate it. Paint is unpredictable and i have control issues.

But it worked out so all is well

Aaaand ,, That's it !! Have a nice weekend (i'm playing dnd)

(Does Explaining the magic Ruin the magic or does it encurrage others to make their Own Magic?? Who can say... (magic is art in this analogy btw)).

Oh i almost forgot i do these things!

Just thought i'd go over the prep work i do before i start drawing, bc I don't rly see ppl talking abt it, but it's smth I prefer over sketching directly onto my water colour paper:

So i did some sketches without reference at first, but i thought they were stiff so i wanted some inspiration

Important step to me when i use reference is i trace over to find where the energy is in the photo. Bc if i just copy it straight without examining it, i have a harder time understanding what I'm drawing, and default to drawing pretty things without challenging myself to construct with intention.

Next step is just taking the ref and Pushing It a little. I ask myself, "what's the next natural movement that would follow the action in the reference image?" Which is a fun exercise to do sometimes, especially with characters whose inner workings you find interesting. It's like acting!

You can rly see the difference in movement between when i'm too married to the reference vs rly pushing it, and playing w it

My thought w the reference for the sg painting was that it looked too young and timid, which Essek Can be that, but it's not what I was going for, so i thought "how can i insert resistance & attitude without making this look like he's having a bad time?" which, the answer was rly just, make it FUN!

Little touches like, paying attention to where the arms and legs go, and who is pushing or pulling who where? Is the fabric crinkled or smooth to indicate pressure? FUN STUFF LIKE THAT

both drawn to life books are free to read on archive.org?? and downloadable as pdf???? what!! YO HOLY SHIT

a coworker yesterday was asking me about these behind my chair, and gun to my head, if you asked me what was the single best drawing book of all time -- it'd be these. there's a reason i keep them in irl arm's length.

not to toot my horn but i get a lot of comments about "believable life"/body language in my drawings, and i owe that to this book. Walt Stanchfield -the author- was one of the main mentors to a ton of the rennaisance era disney animators (Glen Keane, Musker, Deja, etc). this guy understands both the kinectic sense of how bodies move and squish/stretch, and how people "act", and composition/silhouette, and is honestly just a thoroughly decent dude.
