The way Cass gets so truly angry at remorseless killers because of how she's incapable of understanding them. The reason for her compassion towards her enemies is because she sees herself in them. That's why it always cuts her so deep when she's reminded that not everyone is like her. Not every badguy is a tragically misguided soul or a victim of circumstance. To someone like her for whom empathy is the core of her being and who takes every loss of life like a dagger to her heart, someone who can kill another man in cold blood and not feel a damn thing may as well be completely alien. For her own sake she needs to keep believing everyone can change and she hates those people so much because they make her believe it just a little less every single time.

Fluffy stephcass is fun but angsty stephcass is where it's at. Every other Steph f/f ship can put her with a girl who gives her the love she deserves and treats her right but none of them will have the background Cass has where it's like heyyy I used to think you sucked because that was company policy but then we became friends and I fell in love with you but my dad kept saying you were bad for me and I didn't think that but I did think you weren't a good enough fighter to be out in the field and that hurt you so bad we broke up even though we weren't actually together. Then you died because my dad screwed up and treated you unfairly but I refused to blame him but I mourned you just as hard as your actual boyfriend if not harder. I died imagining you bridal carrying me into the afterlife. In my dreams you loved me and rooted for me and forgave me for letting you die and things were easier. But then you came back and things did not get easier but at least you got to slap my dad in the face. He said if he died I should give you my mantle so that you understand what neither of us are able to say out loud because I'm a chip off the old emotional disaster block. So I gave you my costume and never told you why and left for months. You forgave me anyways. I still love you and I think I always will. I'll do better this time.

Will never get over how hilarious the accidental lesbian coding of the koncass "romance" arc was in Batgirl. Like Cass had a 'friend break up' with Steph and immediately the very next issue began observing couples on the street and thinking more about romantic love and whether she should try it and started asking questions and realised that most men were gross actually but Superboy seems kind of OK so she should do the whole kissing and dating thing now right? So she goes all the way to Kansas to try it out and then they fight a rock monster and she's like "Hang on a second I think I'm just lonely and looking for a friend since I lost Steph. I don't think I have any romantic feelings for you at all actually." and they agree to be friends and it's a happy ending and she doesn't for one second analyze the fact that losing her relationship with Stephanie made her want to replace it with a romantic partner.

And then when Steph dies Cass monologues to us about what the funeral was like and says how Steph was her first friend while everyone else is more like family and "Stephanie was... I uh. I can't talk about her now. Is that normal?" (which yes is perfectly normal grief but also the confusion about what exactly separates Steph from the rest of the batfamily and makes her Cass's "first friend" is Something). She then goes on to fantasize twice about Steph swooping in to save her and carrying her away from danger while she's dying. The second time Steph literally bridal carries her in her arms.

Cass will ignore all of this of course and then go on to pat herself on the back when a normal civilian man asks her out for coffee. She declines obviously because she's too busy superheroing but the fact that he asked means she's getting an A+ in the social skills submodule of Romance. She never needs to say yes to any of these of course just the fact that they like her means she's doing a good job and that's all she needs! Anyways time to stare into Steph's eyes and analyze every aspect of what she sees there. As besties.

Cass and Barbara have totally incompatible tastes so the only movies they can agree to sit down and watch together are bad B movies they can both at least enjoy poking fun of. Many a night have they spent on the couch in front of one terrible shark movie or another. Sometimes it's ironically the most close they ever feel. Cass always falls asleep with her head in Babs' lap after an hour or so, leaving her trapped out of reach of the TV remote to suffer through the movie alone.

DC comics execs thinking they got rid of the Cass fans with a McFarlane figure announcement are gonna be sorely disappointed because we're coming for the omnibus too.

anyways like i hate the fanon where tim is just so excluded and alone upon his return because it is just so fundamentally true on every possible level-

but. but. one of the things i find personally delicious is tim & the melancholy of returning home after a time spent away and realizing that life did indeed go on without you. and it's not like it's like a tragic upset! like you probably made the choice to leave! it's not like you think they should have stayed the same without you or anything, or done nothing while you were gone. it's just a random twinge at reminders of the time apart. like suddenly there are inside jokes you're not privy to, events & vacations you didn't get to go on. family game nights you didn't attend. you did missed out on those things, but you had your own rich and important experiences as a result.

so tim. tim. tim returns home & he is welcomed back with open arms! dick & that bond is as strong as ever. things are good. he is elated to finally be back & things are finally ready to return to normal. but normal changed a little bit, while he was gone because like moves on (and he can't complain too much, he changed too so it's not just them). babs is in the cave now with steph, dick & damian in the bunker. there's not really a space he feels most at home in yet. he runs into plenty of the same old villains, but there are suddenly villains who he has never heard of suddenly roaming the place. who is professor pyg. he has to do research, figure out who these people are, like he's new again. & dick is helpful, so helpful but it's still a little frustrating, feeling like he's out of the loop at points. "hey remember when-" or "just like that time-" he doesn't remember when. he wasn't there for it. and he's the one who chose to leave, so he can't complain too much, but it just makes him feel out of sync and sad, and almost like he missed out on something even as he had his own very special and rich and important experiences. it's different. he used to be in the thick of things! he has to relearn his place again.

but, time marches on & tim is there & things keep changing, except now tim is once again part of the change. and he runs into huntress against some new batman villain who started while tim was gone & he asks her if she knows anything about the guy. "robby," she says, "when has any batman ever keeped me in the loop of things. i should be asking you." and he laughs. he and dick have to sneak in an underground tunnel to investigate something, like they did that time to get into no man's land. dick teases him the whole time about rats, but tim gets the last laugh when dick's cape gets snagged on something. new inside jokes are always formed. when people say "remember when-" tim does, because he's there for it. he carves a space for himself in the theater, and suddenly everyone keeps dropping in on him like he used to drop in on them all the time (he keeps setting up glue traps. so far the only person he's managed to catch is tam and she was Not happy). he feels like he has his finger on gotham's pulse again, just where he likes it. the twinges hardly ever occur anymore. why would they need to? life keeps moving forward & he's home.
