Searching from a record set means you can browse the Fold3 collections to a specific publication. Use the search box that appears at the top of the form to search for the soldier’s name, unit, battle, and other relevant information. For example, search Lt. Robert E. Bishop in Fold3 collections, and you will get all the detailed information. Bishop was a Marine Corps aviator and member of VMSB-341 and MAG-21.
Note: The marines that were used in World War II were under the authority of the US. Navy. That’s why many records of the Navy and aviation mission reports will be contained within World War II Naval War Diaries.
Documenting Facts in Ancestry Family Tree from Fold3 Records
When you search records by the soldier’s name, Fold3 will enable you to attach records to Ancestry Tree. Be very careful as you are only providing one page of what could be a lengthier packet of documents. Attaching one page can be the reason for the context to be lost. Customers who browse on Ancestry Trees will not understand what record means.
Research Tip
You can place a description of the entire document in the previous description area on your Ancestry Tree and note the number of pages so researchers can refer to the full report.

Recently my friend Harry asked me to look at his Ancestry DNA Ethnicity Estimate, as he was confused by the results. He was confused that he had a fair amount of Irish in the results estimates, but he wasn’t aware of any Irish ancestors. I asked him about his Scottish Ancestry, and his mother is from Edinburgh.
But in Harry’s case, I guessed that 37% Irish could be in part to his Scottish ancestors. Most people determine that their estimate does not seem to mirror what they know about their ancestors on paper. People usually ask how it is possible to have Irish Ancestry DNA Ethnicity Estimate if they do not have any Irish in their family tree.
Look at the map. You will find that although the Irish Ethnicity estimate primarily represents Ancestry from Ireland and covers many adjacent parts or locations of the world, like England, Scotland, Wales, and North-West Europe. JP is a French guy who has 24% Irish Ancestry Estimates. As you can see, as you move away from Ireland, your Irish Ethnicity Estimates will decrease. Looking at the results, there are two questions to consider.
Why is this area called Ireland and not, for example, Celtic?
If I have an Irish Estimate, will it reflect heritage from the Island of Ireland or something else?
If we take the first question, why is the region called Ireland? There are many reasons for this. The simplest explanation is the reference panel that is used to identify your estimates. The Ancestry DNA Reference Panel is the set of DNA samples representing individuals from particular areas worldwide, and your DNA is compared to obtain your DNA Ethnicity Estimate.
The people used in the DNA Reference Panel have profound roots in Ireland if you go back several generations. You also need to understand the Reference Panel to answer the second question. Ancestry DNA Ethnicity Estimate tells that you share Genetic Ancestry with a group of people who aimed to represent individuals from a particular place of the world.
The shared Genetic Ancestry may be thousands of years ago. But, in the Ireland case, the DNA Ethnicity Estimate clearly says to you that you share Genetic Ancestry with modern people of Ireland who have profound roots in Ireland as authenticated by pedigrees if you go back many generations.
However, we know that even these have profound roots, the neighboring places of Ireland have strong genetic, historical connections to Ireland too. It is obvious that these connections will mirror in the DNA of people who belong to those areas and in their DNA Ethnicity Estimates. Should you understand your Irish Estimate?
You should approach this question like other family history questions and search for supporting evidence. Do you have historical evidence pointing to Scottish or Irish Ancestry? If yes, Ethnicity Estimate supports the documentation or if your surname is Jones or Fraser, typically Welsh and Scottish surnames. It can be an indicator for your Welsh and Scottish source for your Irish Estimate.
You are only looking for evidence from multiple sources telling the same story. If you do not have supporting proof, there can be many explanations for your Irish Estimate. The Irish Ancestry may be above the reach of your paper mark. It can also be possible that your Irish Ethnicity Estimate can portray Ancestry from Wales and Scotland, anywhere in the United Kingdom, or other places. It is not just answering the question but the starting of a more profound understanding examination of your story.

Kristen Hyde explains her motivation behind taking the Ancestry DNA test, and she started researching our family tree in the mid-1990. I was in primary school and spent the next ten years deep in our family history. On 1997, my 10th birthday, my mom started unpicking the layers of our Ancestry family tree. Space was free on the family PC to make space for the Family Tree Maker Software, and all the space-time was committed to visiting our local Family History Library and the council archives of the region where her mother (my granny) and her family had lived.
Knowing my path around Ancestry.co.UK, I remember how much zeal and physical work my mother put into her research in the ten years. At the time, my full-blown adolescent did not value the massive undertaking my mother was going through. As she stopped over Cosmopolitan magazine trying to identify whether Joshua Jackson or Freddie Prinze Junior was more likely to be my celebrity boyfriend.
In 2005, on my 18th birthday, my aunt called my brother and said that my granny had passed away. I remember that morning and the fallout of that phone ring, my mother’s mourning as she cried on the sofa after she cut the phone. Even as an adult, no one prepares a child for the moment they have to comfort their parents through that kind of sadness. It made me scared of the day that I, too, would answer the same phone call. After the burial, my mother and her siblings began the slow process of wrapping up and distributing their mother’s belongings.
With my Granny and Pop now gone, my mother’s research seemed so much more precious and worthwhile. My puppy love for Freddie Prinze Junior was changed in the years that followed, with a true love for writing, reading, and cultural history. And whether it was a coincidence and destiny, all those years, my mother talked about her research at the dinner table. I took a job in Ancestry family history, working for the marketing team in Ancestry’s London Office. It did not take long unless I started to realize who had engaged my mother for the better part of a decade, the persons who had come before us, and the lives they had lived in a separate world to the tech-dependent life I am habitual with.
As a life-long diary keeper and old books lover, I became mesmerized by the records themselves and how menial documentation can be saved in such a way not to help us track our family history but our humanity. I checked my mother’s research, referring back to her family trees and the facts and records and feeling continually ticked by parity between my ancestors and my present family members. I loved the most was that the more I looked into my past, the closer I felt to my mother. I was proud of my mother’s research on family trees and that what was a private passion almost 20 years ago was now something we can share and relive again together. Taking the Ancestry DNA kit was the next expansion of my mother’s journey for family and the future that was coming together with the past.
She has hardened her findings or research in the record books, and I can help strengthen it through science and technology and offer a new eye to what she has discovered. After receiving my Ancestry DNA results, my mother and dad had tested. On the Skype call one morning, my parents were in the courtyard of our home in Australia while I rested in some English sunshine. I revealed the Ancestry results. Together, we read the ethnicity estimates, tracing the different nationalities back to certain forefathers or ancestors or talking through who they are and what role they played in our family story.
Even though my system screen and across my parents’ Wi-Fi signal, I can sense my mother’s passion and zeal, the same passion I have seen across the night at the dining table some years back. Our interest and curiosity to know where we come from can pique for different reasons. From 20 years, my mother started searching our family history; a movement made all the more precious when her mother died. Now, 20 years later, Ancestry DNA strengthened how much I value my own.
