Why You Should Not Offer to Push a Wheelchair User
Let me make it clear that I am not saying you should never push a wheelchair user. What I am saying is to try to avoid offering to push a wheelchair user by asking, "may I push your wheelchair?" Let me explain. Would you ask an able-bodied person, "may I carry you?" No you would not. Why not? Because an able-bodied person can walk on their own. If you carry an able-bodied person, they lose their independence. It is the same if you push a wheelchair user. Only push a wheelchair user's wheelchair if the ask for you to push them. If a wheelchair user is not tired, they most likely want to push themself. Another thing is that a wheelchair is a an extension of someone's body and their personal space. Be mindful of that. Would you ask an able-bodied person if you can touch them. Most people would not. Be respectful to people who use wheelchairs. Let them ask you for help.
What if someone in a wheelchair clearly needs help? In this case it is good to ask if they need help. Her is an example. Of you see a wheelchair user trying to get up a curb that has no ramp, you may offer you assistance. Make sure to ask first. This is very important to remember. If you think a wheelchair user needs your assistance ask. Never help without asking first. Do not turn a wheelchair user's wheelchair without their permission. That essentially means you have just touched the person themself without their permission. Be respectful, always ask.
It is important to remember is a wheelchair does not make someone less capable. A wheelchair does not mean a person needs more help. A wheelchair is a useful tool that helps someone get around. Please respectful the autonomy of wheelchair users.
