Kindle Basics
The Kindle is intended as an e-reader. It has “e-ink” that is made specifically for extended periods of time spent reading. It is not back lit. They can be read in sunlight, lamplight, candlelight, and more. Most (if not all) of the Kindles have the ability to take notes and highlight passages. Kindles are lighter than a paper back book, and most of them are less than 8 inches long.
Kindle is an Amazon product, which means that Amazon is the easiest (but not the only) way to get ebooks. Amazon books are sent via wi-fi or 3G to your Kindle, or you can manually load them via your USB cable. You can browse for books on your Kindle, or on your computer. You must have an Amazon account with a credit card in order to buy Kindle books, even if you are only planning on getting free books.
This hardware is extremely intuitive. I highly encourage you to play around with your Kindle before throwing up your hands in disgust. Download a free book or two, and just see what you can do.

Two collections of free books, both classic and contemporary. Before you rush out to buy your first $15 book, make sure you know what your doing with a free book or two. Plus, there are some great old titles in here, as well as interesting modern books as well.
