Colombian protests 2021 - paro nacional
Please help spread
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For more than 15 years, Colombia's had a government made up of the same corrupt elite, making the majority of the population's living conditions unequal and precarious.
With the pandemic, the situation has only worsened.
The most recent tax reform was the drop that made the glass spill, as it mostly targets the lower and middle classes, leaving the wealthy practically unaffected.
Not to mention it was proposed with the goal of filling a fiscal gap initially caused by the corruption of this very same government.
However, this is only a small part of the problem, as violence and hunger keep rising while the government shamelessly invests in the military budget.
National private media are monopolized by the most powerful businessmen in the country (who happen to benefit from the whole situation), so misinformation is utterly out of control.
Today, the tax reform was discarded but there's an even worse health reform project (and others) on the way.
Not to mention the rising of police brutality -mostly against women and students.
The task of spreading awareness of what's happening is currently in the hands of civilians and small journalism channels that don't really have that much influence.
So, hope lies in gaining the attention of the international media, ONGs, and other entities.

France has always and I mean ALWAYS had a history of Islamophobia...but, for those of you who don’t know what’s going on right now:
They’re trying to ban the slaughter of Halal chicken, citing animal cruelty and claiming Halal (I believe they also discussed Kosher) methods of slaughter are unethical compared to the European practice of stunning the animal (the Halal way of slaughter would be a cut to the jugular vein so that the animal feels no pain).
They then proceeded to ban the wearing of the Hijab (the Muslim headscarf) for girls under 18 in public places.
They also banned Hijabi mothers (women who wear the Hijab) from accompanying their child on school field trips.
Furthermore, they banned the Burkini (a swimsuit that a lot of Muslim women wear) at public swimming pools.
Tumblr media
These restrictions (I have definitely not covered a lot of them) fall under France’s Separatism Bill which still needs to be passed by the National Assembly. France maintains that these actions are to uphold secularism (the separation of religion and state).
However, these targeted laws and the statements accompanying them...
The Hijab ban was the “prohibition in the public space of any conspicuous religious sign by minors and of any dress or clothing which would signify an interiorization of women over men.” This is a commonly used trope about Islam and Muslim men; that they are oppressive of women which is absolutely not true...take it from a Muslim woman! 🧕🏽
Emmanuel Macron said that Hijab is “not in accordance with French ideals”. This again alludes to the misconception that Hijab is oppressive and that by taking it away, we are liberating women. I don’t deny that there are women who had Hijab forced upon them, but what France is not acknowledging is that the forcing of any religious action upon people is completely the opposite of Islamic teachings and that there are actually women out there who can make decisions about what they want to wear...Surprise! It may come as a bit of a shock to them...
...just showcase how deeply rooted these laws are in Islamophobia and how France is maximizing restrictions on daily Muslim life just to...be a white saviour?
There are five million Muslims in France right now and they are all being affected by this.

TO ANYONE CHATTING TO SOMEONE ONLINE
If you are considering meeting up with someone online use this trick identify who really are who they claim to be:
1. Ask them to Skype 2. If they refuse or can’t for some reason ask for a current selfie 3. If they also refuse or can’t do not meet up with them 4. If they provide one ask them to send another with them holding 3 fingers up 5. If they refuse read step 3 6. If they provide a selfie where they show 3 fingers they are probably for real
(If you’re still unconvinced try again with them drawing something in their hand)
I SAY THIS FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY please spread this message as more and more young people are lured out into situations where they get kidnapped because they weren’t 100% sure the person they were talking to was real.

life is not about being something, but someone.
those are words my beautiful mama not only lives by, but also taught me as i was growing up. many times she told me and every time i listened.
life is not about what you brag about and put on your resume, it’s not about the size of your paycheck or the power of your job position. it’s not about the distance you ran, what grade you got in class or how many likes you got on your last post. it’s not about what you can be, it’s about who you can be. the dreams and goals you have, the kindness you show to friends, lovers and strangers, the jokes you crack to make others laugh. the feeilng of freedom you feel when running, the attention to detail you put into your drawing. it’s what you feel, think and enjoy, it’s who you are.
it’s not what you do, it’s why you do it.
my mama taught me that it’s not what we are, it’s who we are. it’s not what we can brag about having done in the past, it’s about what we’re doing in this very moment. it’s how we are kind to one another, help and spread empathy. when i am sad, feeling useless, lacking and unproductive ‘cause i “should’ve done more with my life”… she tells me how proud she is of me, not for what i have or have not done, but for who i have become; how i treat my loved ones, how i think independently, and stand up for what i believe in. and she remind me of it once again:
life is not about being something, but someone.

I know people use phrases like “he’s changing the game” and “nobody’s doing it like him” a lot for musicians, but I don’t think this is an exaggeration at all when talking about Lil Nas X.
When I first saw the music video for Montero (Call Me By Your Name), I just kept thinking about how I had never seen a music video like it, ESPECIALLY from such a well-known artist. I’ve seen plenty of videos where a man is being sexy, but never in the way that Lil Nas X does it in that video. He sings about riding dick while giving a lap dance. I’m sure there are so many music videos where a male singer does this, but I’ve never seen them because gay men who express their sexuality in that way are usually prevented from becoming household names.
And he is getting a lot of pushback for it. People are saying that he’s trying to indoctrinate children, that he’s pushing an agenda, that he’s part of the ruination of society. Gay men are seen as sex-crazy predators, and so are androgynous men. For him to make this video expressing himself and his sexuality in the way HE wanted to, knowing how people would take it, especially as a black man, and then attaching his real name to it?
It’s trending at #1 on youtube and there’s been a huge positive response to it, but he’s risking a lot by releasing this video. The whole theme of the video is religious persecution, and we’re seeing that exact thing happen to him in real time. He’s being called a sinner, he’s being told he’s going to hell, he’s being told that god doesn’t love him.
This song and video are resonating with SO MANY people. People who grew up with a religion that teaches that people like them are wrong, with parents who seek to destroy what they do not understand,  who have had a closeted partner who only told them they loved them in private, who told themselves that they would never come out to anyone, with people who have struggled with internalized homophobia.
Since the world already has their eyes on Lil Nas X, he’s decided to represent himself the way he wants to and tell the stories he wants to tell. From this video to wearing a bright pink leather harness on the red carpet to doing drag on halloween, he is showing everyone that he is not ashamed of who he is and he’s willing to put himself and his career at risk to be that person. By doing this, he’s showing others that people like him exist and it’s ok and it’s good.
Lil Nas X is changing the game. His success will open doors for more artists like him. I believe he’s going to help change the public perception of what hip-hop can be, and maybe even what a man can be.
