Oh! I can answer that for ya - it’s the difference in who they’re fighting for:
Opal alone (and without the tethers of her memory and personality) is fighting to the bitter end for the Spider Queen.
The Crown Keepers together would be fighting for each other, and that means if things got hairy they’d leave the battle/save each other rather die protecting the gods.
Found family is a liability when you’re demanding unwavering loyalty!
One thing that drives me a little crazy for the EXU half while also being completely understandable:
Why does the Spider Queen need Opal to ditch her friends to go fight Predathos? Like ma'am, why aren't you taking advantage of "we'll follow you" to get a whole hit squad instead of just a lonely champion?
And yes, this is probably more about the Spider Queen's own trust issues and visions/understanding of power and a belief compassion (for allies/friends) will hold her champion back. But c'mon. Look at the goddamn logistics of five (six with Cyrus) people fighting for you versus one. In what way is having support that can heal and boost and assist your champion bad? Don't you want a champion that has better odds of finishing the mission and living to serve another day? (probably cares less about champion survivability, being a Betrayer who doesn't care about mortals. But good help is hard to find, especially during a crunch)
I'm just sitting here shaking my head at a goddess desperate to get her pawn in on the fight and going about it the completely wrong way.

None of this is shade to you, OP, but I do want to point out a dichotomy I see frequently where anytime Suvi leans into her Citadel/wizardly power or authority it is seen as innately unkind/arrogant/antagonistic. The Suvi vs. Sky of it all, if you will.
Because it's Suvi's Wiz-Rizz (Skymode?) that, among other things:
Gets back the music box from Prof. Adelaide (who was engaged in documented WAGE THEFT targeting her TRUE FRIEND)
Grants them access to the Chantry so they can get Eursulon's sword and break Ame's curse, as well as equip them both with some minor magic items
Gives Ame safety and round-the-clock care while she's in a coma for a MONTH. Could you imagine Eursulon (or the fox) doing that on their own? Where do they live? Eursulon would have to go get a job then spend all his off hours taking care of her, because who pays for food, shelter, and medicine? All of that is taken entirely for granted because it was handled by the Archmage Apprentice.
There seems to be an implication that Suvi is only kind/good/laudable when she's not The Wizard Sky, but that feels more grounded in fear and contempt for the Empire and assumptions about the scale and nature of the evils it is responsible for; and again, she's always The Wizard Sky. Suvi is kind, she's just not always NICE (and shouldn't have to be, quite frankly). And I don't think she owes niceness OR kindness to the 2 hedgemages that actively exploited her brother or the uppity weed that choked him out in front of her, knocked Ame unconscious and dragged her off to the shrine, and destroyed an entire innocent village.
I genuinely resent the idea that it is only proximity to Eursulon and Ame that teaches or allows Suvi to access kindness, or that respect (for spirits or any other authority) was learned only at Grandma Wren's feet* and not her defining trait (to a FAULT) when we first met her.
Stone [Brennan] I know that your father has explained these rules to you before, but I will say again, in the laws of magic, there are few errors more grievous than being unkind to a host or ungrateful for a service done. So, make sure you are respectful, and if any chores are asked of you, see that you do them.
If those words (which are so important to Suvi) seem like something a witch would say, I think your own justification machines need some inspection, because wisdom is not the sole domain of witches/spirits any more than intelligence is of the wizards. * Wren's lessons on spirits were unique in their reverence for the subject matter, but Steel saying "bro we just stay out of their way and keep it pushing" isn't a bad take on them. And a lot of the supposed Citadel Stance on Spirits™ is conjecture, colored by assumptions after seeing the Cassov Collection despite Steel saying aloud "THERE ARE PLENTY OF SPIRITS OPERATING IN THE CITADEL IN MANY CAPACITIES SO YOU'RE NOT ALONE, BEAR, BUT FEEL FREE TO KEEP YOUR GLAMOR UP FOR EASE'S SAKE"
In ep 24 "Knock Knock" I found this interaction between Kalaya and Eursulon so fascinating
Kalaya: You're a true friend of a wizard of the citadel?
Eursulon: Yes.
[...]
Kalaya: Is she kind?
Eursulon: She can be.
It felt like such a big sister thing to be cautious of this wizard and have concern for her little brother. A spirit in a world that can be unkind to wild ones such as themselves.
But more interesting than that was Eursulon's answer. "She can be." It could be interpreted as, sometimes she is kind and other times not. Which we have seen both from Suvi (wielding the power, prestige, and station of a wizard vs loving and cherishing her friends).
But it could also be interpreted in a future connotation. Like she COULD be kind but we have yet to see. Will the citadel justification machine take over or will she retain the lessons learned from grandmother wren and hold on to a respect for the world of spirits
Last Eursulon saw Suvi she was caught between her friends and the citadel. And while wizardry is not innately unkind the systems put in place by the citadel can be concerning. Suvi has the potential to go down an alarming path with the brass of the citadel pushing her along. She has the capacity to be "unkind". But the gut reactions we see from her. The Suvi reactions, not Sky or the citadel, but SUVI are always kind. With her friends in her life Suvi can be kind and would continue to be kind. But her friends keep pulling away and the fall out from the last goodbye may be very influential into who Suvi will be.
Eursulon may not have meant much by his response but it feels very ominous in that we are yet to see the type of legacy this interation of the wizard Sky is going to leave.

That show was SO FUN and I'm pretty sure people could hear me cackling backstage the whole time, and big ups to whomstsoever suggested "Loch Ness" knowing it would send me on a monsterfucker tangent in my monologue. (it did)
the Bigger show was FANTASTIC. The second half had me dizzy with laughter.
And - I've been going to shows in the Pavilion since I was a kid - that was the loudest end-of-show cheering I've ever heard in there.

Bonus Round: Shaw's trigger is the Queen of Diamonds in the original, which is why I left that clue in the art, but I actually prefer the remake's take: a verbal sequence based on his name.
2004 film spoilers under the cut.
Eleanor Shaw: Sergeant Shaw.
Raymond Shaw: What?
Eleanor Shaw: Sergeant Raymond Shaw.
Raymond Shaw: Mother, I…
Eleanor Shaw: Raymond Prentiss Shaw.
Raymond Shaw: Yes.
Eleanor Shaw: Listen.

working on character explorations for a worlds beyond number animatic - didn't get too far on Eursulon yet, need to try some more head angles and expressions, and do his glamoured self too, but I'm feeling decent about Ame and Suvi! I'll get a better shorthand designed for the girls once I start drawing them in storyboard pro. Fox is still a lil too realistic hehehe. VERY!! Excited to explore how magic is cast! Still need to sort out how I want to handle the audio for the animatic though
