Character Creation: How I Make My OCs

A quick step by step of how I create and begin developing my characters for my writing projects.

Draw a face, adding whatever comes to mind. Just a quick stretch until you’re happy with it. Don’t worry if it’s not your best work, it’s just to get a bit of creative flow! All it needs to be is a basic idea for your new character. Feel free to add colour to your drawing, personally I prefer just a biro drawing but if colour helps your process then go for it!!

Give your character a name. Usually a name just comes to me once I’ve finished drawing (I’ve named her Pryzma) but if nothing comes to mind, search online and see what you find! Or send me a photo of your drawing and I’ll try and help :)

Write a bullet point list of descriptions, using only what you can see in your drawing. Don’t think any deeper than their hair and facial features.

Consider your genre. Are there any genre-specific skills or abilities they have? Add this to your description list.

Now you can start to think about character traits. List 3 good traits and 3 bad traits. Think about strengths and weaknesses of your character and their moral compass. They don’t have to be typically good and bad was of behaving, a trait that could be good for one character could be bad for another.

Consider how their traits could affect their relationships with other characters.

I use this method with every character I create. Yes, you then need to further develop them but with this basic information you can use their traits in developing their backstory and justifying the decisions they make in your story. The drawing is always good to refer back to when writing as it gives you a definite appearance so you can avoid inconsistencies.

It really is the little things. Like, my besties, one of them loves plain pasta with sweetcorn mixed in, and the other can’t find anything that beats my nanas soup, so when they came round for my birthday, I made sure they had some waiting for them. Whenever I get paid a little extra than I was expecting from work, I always treat my little brother to a packet of pokemon cards, or if I buy sweets I always get my mum a little bag of jelly babies because they are her favourite. I don’t even think about it and I don’t expect anything in return, I just go ‘this person means a lot to me so I’m going to show them’

Done and done

me six months ago: an extremely lowkey, casual, barely-even-care, mcu watcher

me now: “i was a woman possessed. i spent about 80% of my time talking about wandavision and loki, and the other 20% of the time, i was praying for someone else to bring them up so i could talk about them more. i could hear people getting bored with me, but i couldn’t stop.”

multiverse theory: when sylvie stabbed he who remains and the timeline went crazy and branched completely out of control, that is the moment wanda heard billy and tommy call for help in the wandavision finale post credits scene.

I was really against Sylki to begin with. It didn’t feel right and I dreaded the romantic plot line. Then in episode 5 I decided that I’d be okay with it if Sylki was canon. But then the kiss in episode 6 was so wrong (don’t kill me yet, please!) They were kissing themself and come on that’s not right. But then, the more I watch the kiss. Everything on my feed is gifs of it I swear it’s like you guys are trying to convert me (it’s working btw). I still can’t get over the selfcest stuff but they work. I can’t ignore it now. As much as the kiss was a distraction, Sylvie knew it would work because she loved Loki and knew he loved her. So, yeah, I guess I’m kind of a Sylki fan. I wouldn’t say I’m all the way there, but after a re-watch of the series I’m pretty sure I will be

LOKI SERIES Final Episode

Love and beg for female characters until they get in the way of your ship… Peggy is a bad bitch until she’s just “dusty coochie” that Steve went back for. Sylvie is a bad bitch until she’s irredeemable and oh no she betrayed our precious boy even though he’s done that to everyone ever and she did it because she has her own mission and has had it for years and isn’t going to abandon it. It’s honestly so ridiculous, I’m so over it at this point. Sylvie had a great arc and is gonna realize that revenge got her nowhere. Not only that, this episode was just a marvelous introduction to the multiverse and KANG, and set up so much for the future of the MCU. I’m so here for it and I’m so OVER the constant negativity over ships. Much more important things happened in this episode. This is why we can’t have nice things.

antis be like “loki will certainly NEVER trust sylvie again only mobius now blablabla” he most certainly WILL forgive her because 1) at the end she broke down cuz she realised what she did was wrong 2) loki knows firsthand what it’s like to done something bad/wrong and not being forgiven for it despite wanting a second chance to change and 3) sylvie’s situation is understandable, like her point of view makes sense and her hurt makes it valid. they tva took her whole life from and it was her mission to take them down and maybe get her life back or find happiness, but she realised it was wrong and it was wrong that she hurt loki like that too but i truly believe she did it because she thought she was saving him from the pain. also sylvie DID trust loki since lamentis, ik her demeanour is hard to read but it’s the little things and gestures that make it obvious that she trusts him, cares about him and didn’t want to hurt him internationally, like she wanted him to go back to the tva in ep5 before enchanting alioth cuz she was scared of losing him !!!!!!! that’s all and i have to say the characters are well written for sure and character development in s2 is gonna be awesome and hopefully we sylki back stronger than before and happy together <3 thansk for coming to my ted talk
