These old Colt advertisements are so fucking rad!
Colt Automatic Pistol Adverts Pt.2
In 1900, Colt began marketing semi automatic pistols designed by John Browning, the first was the Colt Model 1900, this was followed by the Colt 1902, Colt 1903 and the Colt 1903 Pocket Hammerless. These new ‘automatic pistols’ proved popular with the public and in these contemporary adverts, dating from the early 1900s, we can see how Colt capitalised on the new pistol’s impressive attributes.
In the first advert Colt cleverly link their new pistol to another modern marvel, the car. Describing how a Colt automatic is the perfect defence against would-be attackers while you’re out for a drive, hailing the Colt as “a necessary part of an automobiles equipment nowadays.”
The next two adverts focus heavily on the 1903 Hammerless’ safety features, explaining how the grip safety works and repeating again the slogan; “you can’t forget to make a Colt safe!” The third, rather wordy, advert reads almost as a review explaining the pistol’s action and features.
The fourth advert describes the pistol as a “gentleman’s arm” while focusing on the Colt 1903 Hammerless’ firepower, playing on the ‘automatic’ name it claims a rather ambitions seven rounds per second as the pistol’s rate of fire. The advert focuses on the pistol’s flat, easily pocketable design and again on the weapon’s safety.
In the final advert Colt brings into question the reliability of man’s best friend, suggesting that your trusty old guard dog is no match for a ‘modern protector’ - the Colt pistol. Arguing that the reader will have no more sleepless nights or false alarms with “a Colt in your home”.
Interestingly, the imagery used in the advert subtly evokes the new weapon’s magazine capacity, far greater than any revolver, with a stack of rounds ready to be fired and a pile of empty cases being ejected at the bottom framing the advert. At the end of the advert Colt boasts of how the pistol has been rigourously tested before being adopted by the US Government, as Samuel Colt once said: “government patronage is an advertisement, if nothing else.”
