I have exams in May-June, but I thought that I'd still share what I'm working on.
It's a ... fake research paper. I tweaked the idea a little bit from my initial concept, which was just “Who Protects the Protectors? Carnivores as Protectors”.
I’ve gotten a little ways past the Abstract, but here's what I have so far. It's unedited, so some details are subject to be changed but hope you enjoy this sneak peek of sorts.
Tumblr media
P.S.: I am working on some of the asks I had to put off. :)

This one is in honour of @couldyouspeakmyname, who kept me in this fandom with her excellent takes. I can already predict one of the votes on this poll.
(I was tempted to put Louis or Melon in as a wildcard, but we'll go with all lions this time!)

Ibuki and self sabotage
There's one line in Beastars that I consistently have trouble understanding, and it's when Ibuki tells Louis that coexisting with other species isn't for him.
Tumblr media
He says this directly after he reveals that he doesn't want to be someone who's feared by others, after deciding to save Louis' life, even if it's initially only for the Shishigumi’s own gain, caring for Louis' wellbeing, attempting to shield his innocence, and defending Louis' power as the Shishigumi boss, rather than just their figurehead. Sure, Louis is a special case in Ibuki's mind, but what else would you call Ibuki's past actions if not an almost entirely selfless act of devotion to someone of another species purely because he felt like a stronger person because he could care for Louis? Is that not the interspecies co-existance that he speaks of?
So then, what does Ibuki mean when he rejects the idea?
I've thought maybe he's just saying to scare Louis, maybe he's just using it as an excuse or a way to mentally prepare himself for what he's about to do. But I think the most likely explanation is that after spending half his life being told that he must embody violence and fear, his sense of self and self esteem has been eroded into nothing so thoroughly that while he sees himself capable of good deeds, he self sabotages due to the ideas drilled into him by the former boss, and as a result he can't believe himself to have the potential of ever being a good person.

Thoughts on an AU where the Adler play was an actual historical biography or at least based on a true story, either one which establishes that the play's events did happen & that the Grim Reaper is real?
I like both concepts. (The Adler play on a whole feels like a folk story that evolved into myth).

Tumblr media
the significance of ‘Adler’
‘Adler’ is an ancient play, with its roots stretching far in the past. Current research suggests that the play evolved from oral tradition during the era of Life Animals and Nature Animals. There are aspects from both cultures present, and as such, ‘Adler’ represents carni-herbi friendship.
The mystical nature of its protagonists also makes the play ideal for carni-herbi performances.¹ The simplicity of its story makes it an easy play to not only adapt, but add on, too, as well.
Tumblr media
inspired by true events
I must admit that I'm not one for the mystical: I genuinely prefer the idea of the play being real over the Grim Reaper himself being real (though that could also be interesting).
I doubt that the Beastverse would be aware that the story of Adler was based on a real event, but I don't necessarily see that as a negative thing. It's neither bad nor good; just a consequence of the world becoming more modernised and thus, more disconnected from those sort of stories as a result.
Tumblr media
the grim reaper's real
With the Grim Reaper being an actual entity, now, though? I sort of wonder what they would think about the play itself. And would Adler be the Grim Reaper's true name? Or, just what people have called him?
Either way, the idea reminds me of this one fic I skimmed aeons ago, where this god (the personification of beasts on something) did a species swap on Louis and Legoshi. Not the story, but the concept of there being a god, who is shapeless, genderless, and sort of morally dubious.
Tumblr media

¹This is in theory, mind you. Considering that Adler is an agent of death (and his lover is usually played by a herbivore), it’s seen as a no-no for a carnivore to play Adler.

These are from August last year, damn! Everyone told me to watch Beastars. Not a fan from the first season. Just not my thing. I also don't like Haru very much. The fuckedupness from the second, though? I'm on board.

You believe that Yafya being a horse is a brilliant artistic choice? Because it means that, in both a literal and metaphorical sense, he really is a total horse-face!
I can only see part of an ask when it's sent in, so I honestly thought, till now, that this was a legit question and that Paru had made Yahya a horse because of some symbolism or the other.
But this is so much better XD
(Thank you for making me laugh, anon!)

I wonder how would have turned Legosi if Yafya didn't have been a drama queen when Gosha started a family with Toki. Well let's say that nothing change for Leano. But what if Legosi had had a uncle Yafya. Well Yafya could have still been a asshole but wouldn't have hurted Legosi. Imagine when Haru has been kidnapped "Uncle Yafya?" "what?" "the girl that I love has been kidnapped by the Shishigumi" "WHAT?" "i gonna save her!" "WAIT! DON'T..." and the Beastar AND the police ran to the location.
I literally cannot picture Yahya helping Legoshi in such a manner, even considering that in this AU, Yahya may not have been so bitter about Gosha starting a family.

considering that Haru is 100% bunny while Legosi is 75% wolf 25% komodo, their child will be 50% bunny, 12,5% komodo, 37,5% wolf. Also considering that a baby wolf is bigger than a baby bunny, i hope that at birth their child will have the baby bunny height because otherwhise i fear for Haru's health. (well there are adoption if it's too risky for them to have natural children)
Based on the fact that Kibi's arm was able to be reattached after it was ripped off ... well, one would hope that medicine & science has advanced to the point where stuff like that isn't too big of a worry
One would hope, anyway.

That "Legoshi gets adopted by Gouhin" AU is the Pandad AU by tumblr user RexLudo! Been inactive for a couple years now but it's super worth checking out, lots of adorable baby lego comics to go along with it too.
Oh ö
I feel like I might’ve seen one of the comics before. I never considered that there would have been more of those.
Thank you for the heads-up, anon!

I wonder how Beastars would have been different if Yahya had not been a so drama queen when Gosha decided that his family was more important than their dream to be beastars together. If Leano and so Legosi had had a uncle Yahya. Maybe Yahya wouldn't have been so angry against carnis (he didn't seem to have problem with them before Gosha's choice) but i think that he wouldn't have changed so much. Yahya would have just been not a asshole with Legosi but outside that he would have been the same XD
To me, Yahya is a bitter murder horse in every universe.

yahya + bitterness
Yahya strikes me as an extremely bitter person. Granted, we don't really see a lot of young!Yahya, but when we do he never gives the impression that he will develop the beliefs that he holds as an adult.
You know: “interspecies marriages are bad” + “hybrids are also bad” + “carnivores are inherently dangerous to herbivores”. Those beliefs, right there.
To me, Yahya is always going to have this sort of bitterness in him. Even if he were to accept Gosha’s decision to not pursue Beastar status, Yahya would still have a lingering bitterness.
How would that look?
Mostly passive-aggressive comments directed at Toki and perhaps Leano when Gosha isn't around to reprimand him.
Tumblr media
yahya + leano + legoshi
It would take some time for Gosha’s child and grandchild to grow on Yahya. Even when they do, he has a very weird way of showing it.
I cannot even necessarily say that Yahya’s actions speak more than his words. It's a little bit of the opposite: Yahya holds them in higher esteem when comparing them to other carnivores and hybrids. He does this not because they are good, but because they are Gosha’s brood.
It all leads back to Gosha, for Yahya. Make of this what you will.

meeting the parents
Legoshi
➭ He was not expecting your parents to be so ... different.
➭ He also wasn't expecting you to be so ... comfortable around such large carnivores. From everything he's read about small herbivores, there's an instinctive fear that paralyzes their body whenever they interact with a carnivore that's larger than them.
➭ Suffice to say, you don't look fearful at all.
Jack
➭ He'll be taken aback at first, but when he thinks back on it, all the hints were there.
➭ Forgive him if he's a little intimidated — your parents look absolutely terrifying to him!
➭ Jack is extremely curious about how your family unit works, but much too polite to be nosey. He doesn't want to offend anyone!
Collot
➭ If he's shocked, surprised or some other emotion, you can't tell.
➭ He's completely chill about it, all things considered. He doesn't treat you any differently, nor does he seem to be curious. To him, your family is just an extension of you.
➭ After meeting your parents, he starts calling your fluffy fur your ‘mane'.
Durham
➭ Okay wow, how could you have not told him? A little heads-up or something would've been appreciated.
➭ Durham is extremely intimidated — but really, he feels like he should've known better. You going out with him was already too good to be true.
➭ Your parents being large carnivores was just the catch.
Miguno
➭ Whereas Durham is panicky but laughs it off, Miguno remains panicky.
➭ Hyenas don't have a good reputation among carnivores, and he's extremely nervous. He tries to hide his worry, but it's fairly obvious that he's worried about something.
➭ He’ll get over it, eventually.
Voss
➭ In all honesty, he takes it a lot better than you thought he would.
➭ He isn't completely chill about it, but not freaking out, either, y’know?
➭ It’s very much a "Oh, so that's what it is" thing with him. He can either accept it or not, and he chooses to accept it. It's as simple as that.
Tumblr media
midterm holiday
It feels like just yesterday you were unpacking your bags for the start of the school term. You muse on how quickly time flies as you fold your clothes — new ones, specially bought for the occasion — to put away in your suitcase.
Your bed has been stripped of everything but the sheets. It’s the only one in the room like that.
Most animals don’t go home during mid-term holiday. Those few that do either live close enough to justify leaving, or are close enough with their guardians to go home…
Whatever the reason, most of Cherryton’s student body remain on the compound. Still walking around in uniform, but replacing their daily classes with shopping sprees in the city and time out with their friends.
“It’s fun,” you say to no one but yourself, “but that sort of thing isn’t for me.”
You would much rather spend the time with your parents. They send letters every other day, and sneak tins of candies and chocolates whenever they are able to. They’ve sent their usual letter, a reminder to bring a friend home from boarding school so the lot of you can have dinner together.
You’ve never brought anyone home. Until now, that is.
Tumblr media
dinner with the family
Legoshi
➭ He’s nervous, extremely so.
➭ It's a struggle for him to figure out how he's supposed to act. It's rude for carnivores to bear their fangs while eating with herbivores, but not in the presence of other carnivores.
➭ You're a herbivore — so he shouldn't show his fangs. But, your parents are carnivores, which means that it wouldn't be wrong of him to do so...?
➭ He spends more time worrying over accidentally offending you or your family than he does actually eating.
➭ Should anyone point out that he hasn't touched his plate, Legoshi immediately works to clear it (not clearing your plate is seen as rude no matter what your host is!).
Jack
➭ He’s a little surprised by the invitation to stay for dinner, but he's also very happy to be included.
➭ Your parents are both decent cooks — and Jack reminds them at almost every opportunity.
➭ All things considered, it's a very standard dinner.
➭ (He'd love to be invited back again).
Collot
➭ Collot cleans up nicely. He doesn't go out of his way to look super good or anything, but he does tidy himself up — trim the fur around his neck and eyes so he doesn't look too shaggy. That sort of thing.
➭ He starts off a bit stiff, giving one-word responses and keeping his answers brief, but in no time at all he returns to his usual cool demeanour.
➭ (Your parents were both rather fond of him. Why don't you invite him around more?)
Durham
➭ He's like Legoshi: extremely nervous. Unlike Legoshi though, Durham’s nervousness doesn't come off as endearing.
➭ He overdresses for dinner, determined to make a good first impression. He’ll play up everything school-related — he figures that lions have higher standards — and dodge any questions relating to his own family.
➭ His tactic works. Your parents want to know when you’ll bring your “funny little friend” over next.
Miguno
➭ Very panicky (huh, that seems to be a recurring theme with these lads).
➭ Only speaks when spoken to. When you bring up that he's in a band, Miguno wants to die inside. To his surprise, your parents are actually... genuinely interested in what he has to say? They're not feigning interest just to laugh at him?
➭ Your parents occasionally write to you asking about Miguno: “How is your musically-inclined friend doing?” “Has he written any new songs?”
Voss
➭ He admittedly surprises your parents with his swearing, but the effect doesn't linger. They mark him down as a ‘conversational swearer’ and carry on with dinner.
➭ He dresses very casually. No need to stress himself out with looking all formal when it's just dinner at your parents’ house.
➭ Your parents are a little taken aback by Voss’ stature (or lack thereof), but they're pleased — you finally have a friend that's your size! What's not to celebrate?
➭ Neither of your parents are too sure what to think about Voss — they're only certain that they like him.

Imagine if magical sapient bug spirits/creatures existed & secretly lived among the other animals, disguising themselves via glamor (illusion). Which Beastars character(s) would you choose to accidentally discover the truth & how do you imagine the ordeal resulting, even snowballing, from there?
Apologies anon, this sounds a little too close to writing / brainstorming up a story for me to feel all right answering this.

I remember a au on tumblr, where Leano tried to rid of her scales by a doctor, living with Legosi near of the black market for that. And she dies. Baby Legosi, traumatised is found by Gouhin who decide to raise him. And i wonder, do you think that Legosi would have been more adjusted more happy if raised by Gouhin? Would he have had less self-hate?
I think Legoshi would have been more realistic about himself, and what he needs as a carnivore.
— Psychic
Tumblr media
sourcing legoshi’s self-hate
In my head, Legoshi’s self-loathing comes from two sources: 1) society and 2) Gosha's ‘pacificism’.
Beastkind society pushes the idea that all carnivores are inherently dangerous, and are instinct-driven beasts. It also pushes the idea that carnivores taking pride in their non-herbivorous traits (strength, claws, teeth) are bad. Carnivores are only good when in service to herbivores, when they work to maintain society's status quo. These harmful messages are spread by societal institutions, most popularly schools. When societal narms and values are spread through social institutions (think schools, churches, etc.), it is known as secondary socialisation.
Secondary socialisation trasmits society’s values, but society is only the latter part of the socialisation process.
The family is far more formative in transferring social values. When families instill norms and values into their children, it's known as primary socialisation.
All of this is to say: society transmits its values the easiest when those values have been built up by the family.
Tumblr media
gosha's passivity
Gosha's ‘pacificism’ (or passivity, as I find to be more accurate) shaped Legoshi’s worldview more thann society. Society still played a role, mind you, but Gosha's values undoubtedly had a large impact.
I want to pay special attention to Gosha's species for a moment.
He’s a Komodo dragon; a type of venomous monitor lizard. Due to his venom, he is ostracised from society. Those who are familiar with any form of racism (be it against black folk, or another minority) can draw parallels between that and Gosha being forced to sit at the back of restaurants, and being threatened the one time he does sit out in the open at a restaurant. It's all very clearly discrimination.
But, Gosha doesn't really try to fight the status quo. And by “fight" I don't mean that he should be aggressive or anything like that — what I mean is that he doesn't try to fight the messages that his passivity sent to Legoshi. Something as simple as a “Legoshi, it isn't right how I am being treated” would have been enough.
By not voicing discontent with his status quo, Gosha sent the message that “it’s all right for venomous animals to be treated differently”. Given that Gosha is naturally cautious about his venom (as he really should be — we've seen what it is capable of), it provides a ‘justification’.
So the message then becomes “it's all right for venomous animals to be treated differently, because their venom sometimes hurts others”.
Adding on society’s message that carnivores are inherently dangerous nets you: “It's all right for carnivores to be treated differently because they sometimes hurt others”.
It is a sensible message when taken on its face.
In a world where your tiger friend is (purported to be) just as likely to maul you as the predator that killed someone on the news, it makes sense to be wary of all carnivores as a result. Self-preservation trumps all.
The problems start when that message is taken to its logical extreme.
That is to say: if one (1) carnivore has the potential to be dangerous, all carnivores are dangerous solely because they have the potential to be.
Tumblr media
leano + the black market
I feel like this AU would only work if Gosha was out of the picture or if Leano was so certain that the Black Market descaling treatment would work that she would took her son.
I lean towards the second scenario even though I would personally find it weird that Leano wouldn't sneak off by herself to do any experimental treatment. If she hates being looked at by everyone to the point where even her own son knows that (and it's why he didn't turn around to face her even when she hugged him for the first time in a long time) ... I feel like there'd need to be a reason.
So, let's just say that she still wanted to have her son close to her and/or she was so confident that the Black Market treatment would work.
Tumblr media
gouhin + raising legoshi
I personally cannot see Gouhin as the type to raise anyone. I feel like 'mentor' is a better term to use — he’ll give Legoshi the tools and knowledge necessary to keep himself alive, and he’ll give the kid a safe place to stay, and as much as an education as possible, but that's it.
I’m certain Gouhin has a soft spot for children (he raised one, after all), but I think he wouldn't want any child around his place of work. Especially considering that he works with carnivores who would otherwise be arrested for predation.
I can see Gouhin making arrangements for Legoshi to be looked after by someone he knows — it would be part of an attempt to give Legoshi as normal a life as possible.
Still, thanks to Gouhin, Legoshi learns more about carnivore physiology and psychology than he would have otherwise. Yet ... I don't believe that Gouhin would have dispelled much of the rumours around meat and meat consumption.
Maybe Legoshi’s innocent questions (“How come more carnivores in the Black Market don't go feral, even though they're always around meat?”) inspire Gouhin to rethink some of his methods and beliefs.
Legoshi’s curiosity would incite him to harass Gouhin for answers that the poor man, quite frankly, doesn't have.
Tumblr media
No matter what happens though, Legoshi would have ready access to tools and materials that differ from that of mainstream society. Still, it would be up to Legoshi to use them effectively. Giving someone a map doesn't mean that they’ll use it.
And really, it could go either way — with Legoshi fully embracing mainstream medicine as it relates to feral carnivores.
But personally? I'd like it better if Legoshi realises that not everything written in the books are true. Maybe he could start a little observation diary. It's not as hands-on as Gouhin, but it's a way for Legoshi to organise his thoughts and ideas for carnivore rehabilitation.
gosha as an antagonistic force
While living with Gouhin, Legoshi learns the exact opposite of Gosha’s belief system — that being a carnivore doesn't mean that he deserves to be ill-treated.
Given that Legoshi was probably taken by his mother to the Black Market w/o Gosha's approval and/or consent ... I think it'd be interesting if Gosha was the antagonist.
I don't mean villain. I mean ‘antagonist’: someone who opposes the protagonist (Legoshi, in this case).
The antagonism here could stem from a difference between Gosha's belief system, and Legoshi’s own.
Remember: Legoshi is all Gosha has to remember his daughter by. A daughter who so hated the scales she inherited from him that she was willing to risk death just for the smallest chance of them being removed.
For Gosha to discover that his meek grandchild shares a belief system that is completely opposite to his own ... it'd be like a punch to the gut. A final and utter rejection, in a way.
And, here ends my rambling.

I have ... a lot of essays I have been rotating around in my head. I've been very interested in cwriting... I guess you can call them "in character" essays, where I pick a subject, reference made-up sources and go to town (maybe this is becoming my niche? haha).
Tumblr media
Not too sure how many I will be able to actually complete given that I have school starting from Jan 10th, exams in May-June, and also university to prep for haha ;w; but I really want to get another one done.
My askbox is open again, since I’ve finished + queued up all my replies. Fair warning to all: I'll probably be very slow in answering asks, going forward.

Not sure how effective Gouhin is, he just parrots alot of what herbivore law says in a medical context /:
I'm very crossed with Gouhin. I do agree, he can certainly be a legoshi 2.0 with the way he parrots a lot of herbivore laws, and like a lot of beastars soceity he is one of the ones who sees carnivores as inevitable aggressors, and believes most of them cannot control their instincts. A lot of societal problems he blames on carnivores, despite a lot of it just being the fault of herbivores (oppression, instincts, etc. specism, etc.) so yeah he is very much like legoshi in a sense where he pities carnivores, but that's just it. he doesn't really see them as victims in any capacity.
but i think the saving grace for gouhin is that. he does try to help. is it a good, effective way? i honestly don't think so. most of the times he is extremely violent and aggressive to his carnivore patients. he literally chained legoshi up and roughed him up + forced him to look at porn so he could 'fix' them. most of the ways he helps carnivores is not really looking at the societal issues (well looking at them very one sided) he just looks at how the carnivore acts. he doesn't really consider like, all the outside factors.
The thing i hate most about gouhin and his interaction/view of the carnivores is that it has led most people to push that idea that carnivores are supposed to represent addicts/rapists and i just don't think that is good at all. because it really pushes away and erases a lot of the problems, lack of consent, violations, etc., that carnivores face.
and it's also even stranger because female carnivores like juno, sheila, the inaragumi, etc., who deal with in canon misogyny aren't ever considered to be victims of it and are again, often times lumped in with rapists because of the very binary view we get and a lot of that is because of gouhin and his perspective/ mishandlement of carnivores.
he actually helps carnivores, he does. and rather than just writing them all off as lost cases he does do the work to help them. but gouhin works very much, as you said, through the lenses of a herbivore. he still sees carnivores that same way herbivores do, and doesn't really have enough empathy to be seen as a point of nuance for them.
