i've been talking about this with friends over discord but i really need to say it publicly that i think it is entirely unproductive to sift through years of old video footage to look for signs that wilbur was and is an abuser or run his statement through (very inaccurate) AI detectors to argue that a human didn't write it when it's just your average lawyered corpospeak

i think a lot of people, especially younger people in this fandom, feel blindsided and want to find some kind of secret damning evidence that was hiding in plain sight that they missed but that's just not how abuse works most of the time. abusers are people that can and often are perfectly pleasant to most people. there isn't some secret trick to detecting them around you. and while a lot of what we've seen can be recontextualized knowing what we know, it helps absolutely no one to work ourselves into a frenzy to pull out of context clips to paint a narrative of victimhood on every single person he's ever interacted with. there's stuff he's done on camera in the past that we can be uncomfortable with especially knowing what we know now but it is revisionist to act like the same acts people cooed over and called 'brotherly' 2 weeks ago are suddenly smoking guns of abuse.

wilbur is not some disney supervillain who is rotten down to his core he's a human person who definitely wrote or got his team to write his shitty apology and definitely manipulated the people around him but there isn't some film reel of his abuse that we can play or people can look to to say they somehow knew he was a bad person all along

we have actual stories from actual victims to uplift and focus on, we don't need to dig for more things and slap a victim label on people who have not come forward to do so themselves and if they do come forward we can support them then but for the love of god can we stop circulating clips of wilbur and tommy's staged antics or wilbur yelling during mcc

Actually, before I log off for the day, I will say, please don't go labelling Wilbur a narcissist or trying to armchair diagnose him with any cluster B disorders. Having NPD doesn't make someone abusive. Being abusive is what makes someone abusive. By armchair diagnosing an abuser with NPD, it's not only just further stigmatising an already very stigmatised and often misunderstood disorder but also, by framing a mental disorder as "abuser disorder", it almost unintentionally shifts blame away from them as a person and their actions and more towards the mental illness that they may or may not have. This isn't to excuse anything Wilbur's done. Just please keep in mind, people with NPD aren't inherently abusive. Wilbur isn't an abuser because he's a "narcissist", he's an abuser because he's abused people

With the recent things as of late i want to say i fucking hate wilbur soot and despite his name in my fics, he is nothing to me.

i hope anyone who's planning on deleting fics considers orphaning them or telling people beforehand. it's your choice and i fully respect it but i know lots of people who would love to be able to hang on to some of these things personally. no pressure but just yeah i've seen 150k+ word fics disappear out of the blue and saw how many people were distressed. don't think that you didn't make an impact with your writing in this fandom, but it's ultimately an individual choice so i respect it <3

i know i said i'd keep myself out of this but i do really want people to fight against the idea that all abusers are inherently evil people. the fact is that very few, if any, abusers will trap people in relationships for the sole reason of abusing them. abusers will love you. some abusers will not mean to hurt you, or will not even realise they are hurting you. that does not lessen the fact that they are capable of abuse. please unlearn the idea that in order for someone to be an abuser their victim must hate them, or that their patterns of abuse must have been obvious, or that everything they do is inherently tied to being capable of abuse.

i hate the rhetoric of 'oh, you didn't stop enjoying something soon enough, see I did it when this happened, i'm a better person than you!'. it's not only performative and self-righteous, but when you act like that you push people on the fence or still in the stages of working through what they feel and believe into further and more extreme defensive positions- often away from disavowing support for things because they feel like they won't be in a accepted space for not leaving it behind sooner.

when you ostracize people and guilt them when they're still in the process of learning and coming to term with big changes, ones they've already started to work towards and commited themselves to enough to share it publicly, you push them into a place where a lot of that self reflection and work feels meaningless. shame is a strong emotion and the reactions people have to it are not often rational. that doesn't excuse anything harmful, obviously, but if you truly want to make your communities and general internet experience better you should do everything you can to foster places where people can change without feeling as if they're some monsterous big scary 'problematic' person.

no one is ever better than someone else for coming to the same exact conculsion, just earlier. that is the point of why so many people advocate for education. not everyone progresses the same and to expect that is insane. it's also just really fucking annoying
