Why were people applauding Ricky in 3x07? He was straight up going to tell Gina he had feelings for her up until he found out Gina and EJ broke up and then he decided not to. He had every intention to tell her while he thought she was still in a relationship. Ricky doesn’t seem all that different to me in this particular aspect tbh.

I’m so confused to why some people think Ricky would be a better choice to sing scream than EJ like did we not just watch the same show?? Ricky has been shown to have two parents who show up for him and care for him. His mom may not be the greatest, but she definitely loves him and has shown that she will show up for him even though she lives in a completely different state. EJ on the other hand has never had that. His mom is never present and his father is a giant douche bag who only cares about what he wants for his son. Cash cannot accept that his son wants different things from him/has different dreams. EJ quite literally has little to no support system and honestly probably feels so alone.

You know what also makes all of this stuff about EJ being 18 ironic? Ricky is also 18 meaning they’re maybe 6 months apart in age and none of this same stuff applied to him, instead only EJ.
i feel like r/g is like j/b from tsitp and e is a lot like c this season bc he’s trying to take on all this responsibility and everyone villainizes him, even g, in favor of r :/ and it sucks that no one is willing to see how much e is struggling like in s2 g says “I see someone who fails a lot and keeps trying” and yet suddenly doesn’t see him try this season or try to understand the pressure he’s under and instead favors r who doesn’t have the same responsibility like r/g get to be kids (1/2)
(2/2 get to be kids at camp no meanwhile e is like drowning in work just like c was drowning with the responsibility of trying to keep it together while his mom was dying and no one even cared to see that lol just sad I think :/ but typical of teenagers I guess
anon this is such a good point! i think ricky and ej have pretty different personalities from jeremiah and conrad but their positions in the story are so similar! jeremiah can have fun with belly and do the bare minimum because conrad is dealing with so much crap, just like Ricky is able to run off into the woods and do all those things while EJ is falling apart under all his responsibilities.

YES! This! This is why R*na will never be satisfying to me because their breakup doesn't make sense. These characters aren't responding in a consistent way with their established characterization and relationship. And I think all the people saying that EJ isn't a kid anymore so that's why he's having a different summer than Ricky and Gina misunderstand how being 18 is STILL A KID. He's not some ancient adult now that he's 18, especially since he hasn't even left home yet. He shouldn't have to deal with this level of responsibility and pressure on his head.
People are so quick to villainize teens in these kinds of shows for just going through it and trying their best. I'm not saying they can't do anything wrong because they're kids or that the narratives should never hold them accountable for any mistakes. Still, there's a difference between a teen murdering people or bullying others and a teen not being perfect when they're under a lot of pressure and are clearly struggling with anxiety. Yet people treat these characters like they committed the former (murder and all that jazz) when they fit into the latter.

Are they coding Portwell to tell us that they're like The Little Mermaid?
Gina is like Ariel, in love for the first time and struggling to find her "voice" and let EJ know what she's feeling. She's figuratively trying to figure out her legs, where she stands and what it's like to be in a relationship. She's about 15-16 which is Ariel's age.
EJ is like Eric, wanting to find himself and go on adventures, but being told he needs to follow a set of responsibilities as a ruler of his kingdom (in this case the Caswell legacy) and hunker down. He was, after all, supposed to go to Duke. He's 18 which is Eric's age.
Because also look at these visuals despite them doing Frozen -
Matt's costume is like Prince Eric's.
The prom-posal is like the "Kiss The Girl" scene. EJ did not kiss the girl / accept the proposal. Gina with the bow in her hair. (I couldn't easily find a gif without Ricky - but I had a laugh that Ricky was kind of "Sebastian" here).
We see in these scenes that Gina is taking the lead in hopes of "true love" and that's what Ariel tries to do throughout the movie. (Bonus: The similar dancing!)
Plus:
The name "Gina" means "queen".
EJ is presumably named after "Sir Elton John" who is a knight due to his contributions to the arts.
...and the movie begins with a ship-wreck.

One thing that has been made clear is this show has constantly struggled with maintaining a having a main healthy couple relationship. I will say I also feel like with Olivia slowly phasing out of the show, they’re trying to find a way to keep Josh as the main lead (and while I love him and I think he’s a great actor) l personally think his character just serves better as a secondary/supporting character and character’s like Kourtney, Carlos, Sebastian, Ashlyn, Big Red, etc… deserve to have more screen time, backstory and character development. I think Josh’s character really shined in season 1 and had a strong arc but I don’t think season 2 was the best writing for his character nor do I think season 3 is. I almost wish this show was somewhat like Skam where each season is the same friend group but a new lead and they focus of their story, character development and relationships.

The fireworks metaphor is a terrible one.
Long term relationships don’t survive on ‘spark.’
They survive on showing up for one another, learning about and with each other, and figuring out how to forgive when you inevitably screw it up.
All the things that EJ and Gina’s relationship has given from the beginning, well before their romantic relationship was realized.
To imply that kind of foundation isn’t enough, that ‘fireworks’ are the litmus test kind of goes to show why this show can’t seem to depict a healthy long term relationship. The focus is on the falling, not the landing.
And you need both to make it work.
