The term commodity fetishism objectively should bring to mind the way economic actors, both rich and poor, declare themselves powerless before the pressures exerted by the world of commodities (“I’m sorry I have to fire you, but the market told us your services aren’t needed”). It’s conceptually quite similar to Adam Smith’s much-celebrated liberal notion of “the invisible hand of the market,” but rather than benevolent and wise Marx invites us to see this system as a sinister cult. The term commodity fetishism was never meant to scold people for liking material things; it’s not meant to generate guilt after the realization that one craves certain consumer goods (“I’m so bad, but those new shoes sure look pretty”).
Commodity fetishism describes the objective fact that in capitalism we don’t generally relate to each other as humans asking each other to do things, but rather indirectly command each other through commodities. If I go to a restaurant, I don’t beg the cook to make me a meal and the waiter to deliver it, nor do I imperiously threaten them with violence, nor do I cajole them into it. I just buy the meal. The meal itself then appears to command them to move, like a little god! And I in turn must similarly follow the commands of commodities in order to acquire the money to purchase such meals. This is how the factory comes to want to be used, and how the tropical fruit comes to want to find its way to Stockholm. As Marx puts it:
“To [producers], their own social action takes the form of the action of objects, which rule the producers instead of being ruled by them.”
From this perspective, one of the central tasks of communists is to liberate workers not from work or desire itself, but from a generalized lack of decision-making agency in the face of crude economic fetishism. People should decide what people do, not commodities! Looking for alternatives to enslavement by commodities, some look back to feudal, religious, and romantic patriarchal forms of despotism, but socialists look ahead, towards socialism’s multidimensional interaction and negotiation, demotic and democratic.

divorce is hard. it often leads to shitty credit scores and a much lower quality of life esp for women with children. once you own property with your husband, have kids with him, pay off debts together, have health insurance through his work or other benefits, etc divorce becomes a last resort. it's not as easy as snapping your fingers the second your husband is an entitled dick to you - that's why we see sm unhappily married women try to brush off hubby's bad behavior as a joke or minor infraction. i wish everyone was more real about the realities of divorce for many women and how it can look like it would offer more roadblocks than liberation

was hesitant to make this post being irish american myself but it’s relevant on here so i’ll rephrase something i said recently that a staunch majority of self identified irish americans have no actual interest in engaging with irish culture or decolonial politics but appropriate irish identity to feel Special within US american individualist culture while occupying the oppressor class and reaping its benefits. the irish american identity is class traitorism, not in that all irish americans are bourgeois but that it originated as an indigenous people marginalized under imperialism assimilating into beneficiaries of settler colonialism, white supremacy, and economic exploitation of the third world while paying empty lip service to and commodifying their heritage. america is also an oppressor to ireland, which all irish americans have the capacity to enforce. the US government occupies shannon airport as a military base against the will of irish people, tourism catered to irish americans drives rent up to unlivable heights, and the US military drags over their propaganda to entertain their visiting sports teams and push their agenda for ireland to join NATO. biden’s whole schtick is being an irish niceguy while he tries to prod the free state into signing up irish citizens for america and britain’s imperialistic wars. this is bare minimum for our communities to understand and take accountability for.

Cops Lie Vol 1000
The Office of Police Accountability (OPA) investigates accusations of Seattle Police Department officer misconduct and recommends disciplinary action when they find it appropriate. About every other Friday, the OPA drops a chunk of its latest case findings. Last week, the agency closed 24 cases with no allegations sustained, though a handful resulted in a referral for more training. As the Seattle Police Officers Guild (SPOG), which represents rank-and-file officers, continues to negotiate with the City, I plan on taking a closer look at the complaints that land SPOG members in front of the OPA.
Cop Goes Vroom
Case Number: 2023OPA-0018
The OPA sent South Precinct Officer Corey L. Foy for more training after he allegedly drove his patrol car through downtown at double the speed limit for about a minute in the middle of a weekday afternoon in January. The agency couldn’t find a reason for him to hurtle through downtown that day, as he wasn’t responding to a call. The investigator also noted that Foy apparently failed to turn on his lights or sirens, according to the OPA report.
The person who complained said the cop drove behind her northbound on Beacon Avenue South before entering the road’s center lane, cutting in front of her car, and then speeding away at about 50 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone. In addition to speeding, the woman reported him for allegedly traveling in a turning lane, continuing straight through a “right-turn only” lane, and parking in a load-only zone longer than allowed. Foy’s patrol car GPS data confirmed the woman’s account.
OPA concluded the cop potentially committed several parking and traffic infractions, which the SPD policy manual considers minor misconduct. The investigator determined his chain of command should deal with the matter through retraining.
The agency has 16 active investigations into vehicle operations by SPD cops. About 14 of those complaints have come in since SPD Officer Kevin Dave struck and killed 23-year-old Jaahnavi Kandula while she crossed a crosswalk in January.
Questionable Stop
Case Number: 2022OPA-0409
In November 2022, OPA opened an investigation into North Precinct Officer Vanessa M. Mercado for a stop she conducted that month. During the stop, she allegedly pulled out her gun to detain a man without any evidence that he’d committed a crime. She sought him as part of an investigation into a stolen car that another person had crashed nearby. Cops arrested the driver of that stolen car but also searched for a passenger who’d left the scene of the crash.
When Mercado approached the man, she told him to stop, but then he kept walking, so she pulled out her gun and ordered him to put his hands against a wall before handcuffing him. OPA pointed out that these actions likely exceeded the scope of the stop. Riding in a stolen car isn’t a crime, and she didn’t have any evidence showing he knew he was in one anyway.
She left the department before the OPA could finish its investigation, but, had she remained, OPA recommended that a supervisor review with her SPD policy on detaining suspects.
Domestic Violence Call from Detective’s House
Case Number: 2022OPA-0454
OPA investigated whether a Seattle police detective lied to Pierce County sheriff’s deputies when they went to the detective’s house for a domestic argument last winter. In December, the wife of SPD Detective Nicholas R. Kartes called 911 for help after he took her phone and started to throw things around the house, according to the report. The woman said she needed someone to come intervene. While on the phone with 911, dispatchers allegedly heard Kartes threaten to make a report to get his wife arrested for hitting him in the face.
When deputies arrived, Kartes told them the incident hadn’t turned violent despite blood on his shirt. His wife had a cut on her finger, and he had a cut on the inside of his lip, according to the OPA report. The agency did not sustain the complaint that Kartes lied about the incident to deputies because OPA viewed him as a victim of domestic violence.
Deputies ultimately arrested his wife because she “struck his face” while trying to “escape his grasp,” according to the OPA report. This is not the first time the spouse of a cop called 911 during a domestic incident and responding law enforcement ended up arresting the spouse rather than the cop.

"In 1984, a few years before his death, James Baldwin explained to an interviewer from the Village Voice that queers could see the precarity of heterosexuality, even as straights kept it hidden from themselves. 'The so-called straight person is no safer than I am, really. The terrors that homosexuals go through in this society would not be so great if society itself did not go through so many terrors it doesn't want to admit.'
As Baldwin saw it, it is not simply that straight people are suffering and in denial about it, but that heterosexual misery expresses itself through the projection of terror onto the homosexual. One way to think about this is that homophobia is the outward expression of heterosexual misery; a kind of subconscious jealous rage against the gendered and sexual possibilities that lie beyond the violence and disappointments of straight culture."
-Jane Ward, The Tragedy of Heterosexuality

Begging leftists who are active on the internet to be careful of what they're posting, especially if they are posting their opinions on accounts with their irl face. I see SO MANY young (18-21) communists posting on twitter and instagram with a hammer and sickle icon in their bio, talking openly about US imperialism and posting images of their face-- and I don't think people understand that these posts could potentially be used to charge them with a crime.
What you post on the internet or google can be used as evidence in court! There are people on the internet who are undercover officers! EVERYTHING you post, even if your account is private, can be handed over to the authorities.
I understand that visibility of lefist ideas is important, but so is your physical safety. We are in McCarthyism 2.0 (though the original era never truly ended). Please read about cointelpro, about the undercover officers who infiltrated the BLM movement, and about how the FBI used anarchist zines to divide leftist groups.
These are all previous tactics used by the US government that are STILL IN USE to infiltrate leftist movements. Except now, thousands of people have visible social media trails. I am especially concerned about self proclaimed communist groups (not naming names, but there is a prominent Asian diaspora org that does this) posting numerous pictures and videos of its members. Even if the organization itself isn't doing anything illegal, those individuals pictured might, and this content is EASILY used in court to prosecute leftists, regardless of whether or not they've done anything "illegal."
Please, please be careful with what you post. I myself am guilty of this very issue! But as the talons of US empire tighten, heat will be coming down on those who are self declared against it. I encourage people to read about the May 19th movement and the Black Liberation army, both of which were "underground" organizations. Visibility and representation is not going to lead to the revolution, at least not under these conditions.

So apparently, "show don't tell" was pushed as Really Good Writing Advice in the 1950's because it kept writers from discussing political ideas that challenged the status quo.
Which like... obviously, "show, don't tell" can be useful sometimes, like if you're describing a terrifying monster! But pushing it as The Only Way To Write would definitely have a chilling effect on stories centering concepts and experiences unfamiliar to readers.
I find it both fascinating and a little disturbing how effectively censorship can be accomplished through simply convincing people that certain forms of expression are gauche.
