Nameless Part Twelve - Apostate Page 2/10 I'm sorry, the only way to visually show Barriss successfully making an ideological transmission towards the future Grand Inquisitor was to make them gaze at each other like two sad wet seals. Text is taken from the TCW episode, ‘The Wrong Jedi’. The comic is also available here on AO3.

This post inspired by a) the lack of fanart for several characters who are not even that obscure, and b) the incredible itch I have to find anything for some random pairings I was 100% sure would exist with the kind of oneshots that go so hard they temporarily rewire your brain.
I feel there is not enough downtime any more between Star Wars content updates for the fandom ecosystem to really grow funky and weird about the newer stuff. There has to be a period of zero canon updates so that people can muck around in existing stuff long enough to give everything a go.
I just love typing in obscure characters or random pairings or niche topics for older Star Wars things, and finding at least a few fan creations where someone gave their whole little heart into making it. The end result may vary from seriously crafted perfection to godawfulness to purposefully silly nonsense, but damn it, all such things mixed together make for such an entertaining fandom experience.

Aww yes, layer 66 on my newest comic page file has turned out to be the Grand Inquisitor's eyes underneath his Temple Guard mask.
I just thought that turned out neat.

If I had to make a guess myself as to which Temple Guard was the future Grand Inquisitor, I'd have picked this guy. Zero compassion. He just approaches Ahsoka from behind while she's in shock and yoinks her padawan braid clean off without a warning. Ouch!
Tumblr media
On the other hand, this guard here is my fave. He's the only one to bodily come between a lightsaber fight to shield the younglings.
(A different topic is the survival instincts of said younglings and their elderly instructor, who does eventually also stand in front of them. But no one thinks to shuffle over somewhere safe where they wouldn't have front row seats to an actual deadly lightsaber battle featuring a person who has already killed Jedi. Okay, Barriss probably wouldn't harm the kids purposefully, but still.)

Sorry to be making text posts every single day, I'm being unusually chatty here. I'm super busy with work and I think my social levels are slowly approaching 'deserted island dweller'.
There might be a comic page update in a few hours, it's a doozy to colour in 12 figures, though.
Additionally, I tend to draw things on a smaller scale, but I made a mistake here and drew them waaaay tiny on paper. There's a panel of six figures who are all together about as big as two of my fingers.
I like to do a different main colour for different scenes, I'm happy that I managed to finally fit in purple. :3

I am not a regular TCW viewer, was the whole 'Barriss Offee is a villain' reveal a natural character progression for her or did it come out of the blue?
Because Wookieepedia makes it look like it was a totally random thing for her to decide to do.
And were TCW fans mad at the time, or were they cool with it, what was the drama like?
(Also, I am now totally seeing why people thought Barriss should have returned in Rebels as an inquisitor. They apparently 'have plans' for her, and thus she never got officially killed, but I cannot find if they ever used her in any other materials, or if the character is still in limbo.)
I think they should have made her the top dog inquisitor. Though it would have made Rebels overkill-focused on Ahsoka, I guess.
P.S. I'm a little slow on the uptake, but it just struck me that they really did make a whole TCW arc where the headscarf-wearing Jedi turns out to be a bomb terrorist, wow.

Next comic chapter is outlined! It'll be 10 pages long and titled 'Apostate'.
It's the only 100% serious chapter so far, and one that I hope I'll be able to make readable as having a sincere 'star wars space opera drama' mood instead of something overly melodramatic.
I am looking forward to drawing identical Temple Guard characters and playing around with body language rather than facial expressions for communicating feelings.
Anyway, I've made detailed preview layouts for the first six pages and I've more or less done the entire chapter dialogue. Minor tweaks (usually text trimming) happen during the later process. The first two pages do use direct dialogue from a TCW episode for plot clarity, though.
Next up is sketches, line art and colours. :)

Also when I say I have an "inspirational folder" for my comic, I have to showcase that it's also full of stuff like this... It's all relevant in context, I promise.

I took a lil purposeful break from the comic to sort out my inspirational folder into thematic subfolders, and now I'm dealing with sorting out the story for the first scenes I'd envisioned when I was first imagining the comic.
It's weird to see all my work thus far lead to these parts, because there have been subtle shifts that I need to address now.
Having said that, I do not think there is a way to elegantly have a Temple Guard flashback chapter without showing scenes from the Clone Wars episodes of Ahsoka's trial/ Barriss's confession. I think I'm literally going to have to have a recap page of sorts, that has actual quoted text from the show, but from the Inquisitor's POV. Is that too weird??

Garden Watercolours, 15x21cm.
This is atypical for me, but I love how it turned out! I've been painting a lot with my wee apprentice Tara and it's really fun to just relax and do whatever comes to mind with brushes and see what it turns into.

I always put up a warning/heads-up when I think I might do a lot of text posts, but I always end up writing maybe two, three posts max.
Anyway, please do feel free to send me an ask or something!
Esp. if it has to do with the inquisitor comic, as I am still very much in the planning phase of my next comic chapters and that is a bit lonely. (And I am still obsessed with the comic, though I may dabble in some nature and polar exporation/The Terror art real soon.)
In prep for the next comic chapter, I watched some Clone Wars episodes for checking out the canon lore, and I may share some thoughts on those eps. Liveblogging a decade old cartoon arc, woo-hoo!
I have just never been properly up to date with consuming media, I guess.

I was expecting my family to come home right about now, so when I heard the doorbell ringing repeatedly, I opened it while making cutesy cheery talk for my toddler like awww lookit the bell going ring-ring, who could it possibly be...
It was a door-to-door postcard salesman.
