I'm kinda confused about the typical hardcore Megaten fan's reaction to Soul Hackers 2. Hasn't SMT always appealed to weeb trends? What's the difference in this case, that it actually has a marketing team backing it up?
I can only answer for myself for this one, but when I originally got into SMT around 2005, it was because it was different than other RPGs. Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga stood out in the market. It marched to the beat of its own drum instead of following trends; the "punk" attitude by which you used to see SMT defined.
But then something peculiar happened: Persona didn't just become popular, it became a trend-setter. So how can you swim against the trends when their current is carrying you? This is why you see complaints that games like Tokyo Mirage Sessions, SMT4A, and indeed even SH2 have more of that trend-chasing Persona influence instead of the original "punk" creativity mentioned above, whether it's TMS going from SMT x FE to its final idol form, SMT4A's writing and characters, or SH2's presentation and more Persona-like demon mechanics.
So no, SMT didn't always chase weeb trends, but you can say it's always been a melange of pop culture influences. But being "totally 100% original" was never the point for any Megaten game; rather, the series was about being artistically and creatively expressive in ways counter to popular RPG trends, from the days when those trends were set by Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Megaten stood out to survive. It's been apparent since around Persona 4 that the games Atlus develops have not been as creatively distinct as they used to be, sticking to formulas or attempting to emulate past successes.
