That’s how you know you love someone, I guess, when you can’t experience anything without wishing the other person were there to see it, too.

C’MON PATTY!
No, I did not make sweet potato pie. I don't think my baking skills could ever compare to our beloved Patti Labelle. However, speaking of African American icons, I did decide to pay homage to black history, being it February and all, and make some traditional Jamaican and African food.
I chose those two cultures in honor of two of my favorite black icons, Marcus Garvey (native Jamaican) and Marcus Samuelson (native Ethiopian) respectively. Give me an accomplished civil rights leader, and one of the most successful chefs in America, and I'll take the inspiration and make magic out of it.
And you know what, I did.

Beef patties!
I'll admit, before moving to New York, I honestly had no idea what a beef patty was. Subsequently, when a fellow New Yorker mentioned grabbing one late one night, I think I imagined in my head a hamburger patty type thing....maybe with spices of sorts.
I had so many questions. Do I put it in between bread? Is there ketchup involved? Is it served hot or cold? Do I need a fork? Needless to say I had no idea I was actually going to be eating this:

There are several cultures that have their own spins on filled pastries....including empanadas (Hispanic), samosas (Indian), or even the endless list of French pastries. But Jamaicans use very specific meats and spices, with a bit of a complicated process, to make something not only truly special, but extremely yummy.
You know how I'm usually like, "OMG I'm Randol and this recipe was so easy do it now!"? Yeeeeeeh.....about that. It was not easy. But, it was really fun. And hey...it worked :)
Not going to lie, I had a little help from Alex, and even Terris who showed up and showed out with some rice and peas! But we'll talk about that later.
I used this recipe here for traditional Curried Jamaican Beef Patties.  Curry is literally all over this recipe, in addition to turmeric and allspice in abundance. I think the scariest part was making the dough, because I had never attempted bread/dough related foods, but with the help of fancy schmancy standing mixer (thanks mommy and daddy!), it was a piece of cake.
Admittedly for the meat filling, I used more than suggested. While the recipe calls for 2 tbsp, I did at least 3, maybe more. I also had more dough than the predicted yield. So I guess everything worked out perfectly. Get together your flour and egg wash and I promise everything will be just fine.

Yeah my hair looks like crap again...so what? And yes I was listening to my idol Hillary in the background....but these things obviously only enhance the creative process. Ergo, as per usual, I ended up adding generous amounts of the spices (more than recommended) to my PATTY meat. It was lovely and perfect in every way :)
Of course we needed side dishes. As previously discussed, I wanted to include Ethiopian cuisine because....well....it's fantastic. So I enlisted Terris (he can only cook rice, nothing else) to use this recipe to make rice and peas with coconut milk. I also thought it'd be a lovely idea to prepare some Atskill, an Ethiopian cabbage stew with potatoes carrots, and onions.

At the end of all the flour mess, mixer issues, veggie chopping, and beef cooking, the finished product was a delicious plate of cultural food

I just realized that I've been yammering on and on about food without mentioning any adult beverages. For shame. For shame.

Jamaican beer is literally to die for. So in this instance, we kept it classic and went with Red Stripe. A pale lager with 4.7% ABV, Red Stripe is the perfect beer to pair with Jamaican cuisine due to the fact that it has super strong herb flavors, which is delicious on the palate with spices like turmeric and curry.
We also decided to throw in some Ginger Beer to carry on the Jamaican trend--DG Jamaican Ginger Beer, non alcoholic--extremely refreshing for a pre dinner treat.
I couldn't let the night go by without having wine. Because.......Somm plus wine equals happy times.
While it's usually frowned upon in the wine world for not being dynamic enough (and also hard to find one that’s tasty), I chose a South African Pinotage to pair with my patties. Stellar Organics, imported by the Triton Collection actually has a delicious Pinotage (a blend of Pinot Noir and Cinsault) with so many red and blue fruit flavors containing little tannin and lots of acidity. Aka...perfect for a lighter beef dish with little to no oil, and veggies on the side.
Pretty much the perfect dinner. Hats off to Black History Month. And thanks for the inspiration to my Marcus'!
I am more than satisfied with my cultural endeavors, and more importantly, so excited that you all are able to share it with me. I truly enjoyed cooking and drinking everything, and of course loved sharing it with you all. You know me....you know how it goes.....come on you winos...celebrate and have a glass with me!

What I am trying to say is, I understand feeling as small and as insignificant as humanly possible. And how it can actually ache in places you didn’t know you had inside you. And it doesn’t matter how many new haircuts you get, or gyms you join, or how many glasses of chardonnay you drink with your girlfriends… you still go to bed every night going over every detail and wonder what you did wrong or how you could have misunderstood. And how in the hell for that brief moment you could think that you were that happy. And sometimes you can even convince yourself that he’ll see the light and show up at your door. And after all that, however long all that may be, you’ll go somewhere new. And you’ll meet people who make you feel worthwhile again. And little pieces of your soul will finally come back. And all that fuzzy stuff, those years of your life that you wasted, that will eventually begin to fade

My idea of Christmas, whether old-fashioned or modern, is very simple: loving others. Come to think of it, why do we have to wait for Christmas to do that?
