october art challenge PLANS?
so october's happenin soon... not sure what i wanna do as a drawing challenge this year. Last year i did outfit-ober which was fun but I want to switch it up.
Can't figure out how to make a poll/vote sort of thing endemically on tumblr so i'm linking my twitter poll!! Not sure if u can vote in it if u don't have twitter tho lol but if u DO... skew my opinion someway or another by voting on an october art challenge theme thank u
Personal thoughts on each theme idea I have:
zzztober (found out i need 9 hours of sleep not the national 8)
fav-character (i have specific taste in fictional characters that could be fun to inflict upon u all day after day for a month)
creature (i have a big stash of ideas for this already ahaha)
foodtober (i wanna get better at drawing food but my fave foods usually look like slop of some sort and slop-based foods r hard to draw)

imagine if aliens found the dead body of a human being exploded in the vacuum of space and they started making fun of the mutilated corpse calling it “splatter alien” and saying it was the ugliest alien in the whole galexy. and then made stuffed animals of it to sell to their alien kids. that’s what happened on this planet to the blob fish

update on this: i just spent a whole hour looking for a genshin doodle and turns out my personal art file naming system sucks ass bc i will just draw unrelated stuff on a new layer in whatever file is open at the time. the genshin doodles were in a file called fishfighters.clip and i had to open up every .clip file i'd modified in the last 2 months to find it and now i have to post about it because what a herculean undertaking that was
5, 9, 14 for the artist ask game?
hiyaaa!
5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself
oh boy. I probably post online, about 10-20% of all the art I make? I do "art" professionally too so a large chunk of stuff I draw isn't illustration - it's assets, backgrounds, comic panels etc. Which are either NDA or just a bizarre thing to post (wanna see like 50 pictures of photobashed rocks? and 4/5 of being just recolours/different angles of the same rock? lol). Out of all the "postable" art I make, I'd say I upload around 50% of it - there's a lot of commissions and sketches/wips I could TECHNICALLY post but just can't think of a stupid enough caption to go with it, or I don't want the pressure to finish wips I want to abandon, or the art doesn't serve my higher secret agenda of personal curation haha, but i do like to share!
9. What are your file name conventions
Personal: Tend to name things as simple single word file names, which means I run out pretty fast. I have "fish" and "fishly" and "fishhhhhh" at this point. When the word's been taken already my hack is just hold a letter down on the keyboard for a couple seconds then call it a day. Or, passionate keyboard smashing. BUT IN MY DEFENSE I do format version controls decently - I append "sm", "crop", "big", "alt", and numbers to stuff that needs to be exported to multiple files.

I don't know why this one was called jellicles it's a transistor doodle. I think I just watched CATS maybe
Professional: I'm a good worker I name and do version control well!! rest assured my naming conventions are CLEAR AS DAY where others are concerned
14. Any favorite motifs
Yeah! I love to shill my interests in any form, be it just talking about it to people or incorporating them into designs. I like reading about fish and aquatic life, as well as culture from historical Asia - this includes ceramics history, tea, forms of entertainment, myths, fashion... just evolution of anything be it human culture or living things, it's cool to learn about how things have changed. One thing I like in terms of faces is red eye shadow. It instantly makes anyone look cool + now that xiao and genshin impact are popular, I see more and more artists opt for adding very traditional-chinese makeup to their OC designs and it makes my heart SING

i have to ask!! i am in LOVEEE with your character designs, literally all of them!! they all have such cool ideas and v i b e s !!! how do you get inspo for your fashion? they all seems so cohesive even though they have so many lively colors, and the new pieces of clothing you create are amazing!
hiya! thank you so much, I put a lot of thought into my designs so it's always nice to get a shoutout about em ^_^
I spend a LOT of my time just absorbing stuff on the internet and staring (politely) at other people and objects in public, and I'm constantly noticing when I go "oh that's cool" and then analyzing and isolating what exactly I find cool about the thing. I think I am quite judgemental and self-conscious about how I personally look, so the thoughts of "oh this would look cool with that!" or "i wish there were pants that look like this" come naturally since I am thinking about it almost all the time! I don't know if it's a healthy mindset I would promote, since it would not be off-mark to call it a fixation, so I'm wary of framing this like a "pro-tip" or "advice". Being so self-conscious of what you look like will affect how you present yourself to the world too, in good and bad ways.
Along with expanding my arsenal of Fashion Options by staring at people and things, I think it also helps to explore how much you can customize any single article of clothing and to maintain a sort of playfulness with it! Any aspect of any article of clothing can be changed to make a silhouette or as an opportunity to hide little 'easter egg' details. And don't forget accessories and using skin as a canvas too - tattoos, scars, makeup, hairstyle...! Often ideas will come from like, thinking of a funny twist to a typical garment or a really striking silhouette. For example, the thought process for this one was "imagine the smallest little girl ever, bent over struggling for her life under a herculean backpack full of everything you can ever own. haha that is funny. also lol that's just a snail/hermit crab. well if crab then add pincers and shell-like motifs somewhere, maybe some beach and sand, and make it warm and sunny"
tldr: i'm a gawker and i like to play around with silhouette and details in service of a central theme, to make a outfit design come together cohesively! essentially, just immerse yourself into what you like and then just try them out, combine them, and of everything you end up with, pick out combos you like.

I put this on twitter so I thought I'd share here too - Original colour scheme I had in mind for this design was a blue-ish pearlescent one! Really wanted to emphasize the scales in the poncho/dress/thing, and make the hat look like taiyaki. But then I coloured the other 3 outfit designs said fuck it we Eyedrop Every Colour From Those Designs and Mash Them Into This One

Rainy Day Outfits 4: Koi
Earring design is the Small Seal character for "fish"! Small Seal script is a precursor for the modern Chinese writing system
Saved this one for last since it's... my fave

3 and 30 for the art ask?
3. What ideas come from when you were little
Difficult to say! I still feel very young and little, and constantly have to remind myself I'm part of the "Labouring Adult" Demographic now and Have To Work For A Living, and My Parents Are Getting Old Which Is Tearing Me Apart. It's hard to categorize my life into clearcut life stages like "little kid", "teen", "adult", so I can't really pinpoint origins of ideas. Like, I guess I always thought cats were cute and now I draw them sometimes? I watched Naruto in grade 5-8 and it taught me how to draw teeth and hands? As a kid I had convinced myself I was allergic to eggs because I hated the flavour of birthday cake and wanted an excuse to not eat it, but now that I learned other ways to refuse eating birthday cake (saying "no" helps lol), I recognized that actually I fucking love eggs and think about them day in day out and have a weird complex about them where I feel the need to raise eggs on an artistic pedestal as a way to compensate for my younger self's scorn for eggs? Nothing really jumps out at me, sorry.
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated
Hmmm, depends on my mood! Probably all of them, on days when my ego is huge, or none of them, on days when I think about how lucky I am that so many people do like my art. I've gotten a lot out of social media (mutuals, friends, jobs!!!, inspiration) so I'm grateful!
Also of note: I've observed that most of my art either does well on twitter or tumblr but rarely if ever both - most recent example is, my Frog rainy-day outfit design "did numbers" on twitter and my Goose one did mediocre, while the opposite happened on tumblr. A couple of my Yan arts "did numbers" on twitter as well, but it's my comics about sharks and being chinese (and a drawing of a plant astronaut and some planets???) that "did numbers" on tumblr, while my Yan art gets lower mileage here. So it's hard to pick a single piece of mine that I would believe is underrated "everywhere".
I don't want to you empty-handed though, so perhaps behold this one! It's a BTS fanart of RM whose face is my absolute favourite to draw. I like it a lot still, despite it being so many years old now.

gosh i wanna ask you every question lol. how about 5 28 + 29?
5- answered already :D
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines)
I have done so many zines it'd be tedious to list em all! My current opinion of zines is that you gotta be REAL careful either as a participant or a customer bc SOME REAL SHADY STUFF HAPPENS! Speaking of which, I'm currently trying to salvage haikyuu flowers zine from the shit hole it fell into over the last year and a half. i'm in hell
Aside from zines, I've attempted inktober pretty much every year (a lot of u probably know me from outfitober 2021!), and I do Hourly Comic Day but it's for my friends' eyes only usually. I've been meaning to do swordtember this year but hoo boy i'm unprepared and unmoisturized we'll see we'll see
29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically
Oh, almost everything I watch/read nowadays! I feel like I decide to engage in a piece of media either because it's something I want to study for its artistry from the getgo, OR something I want to consume as a consumer, tho not opposed to having some of its elements trickle down into my mind as "inspiration" later on, but not directly
Here's a list of stuff I like and will probably not get into drawing fanart for or mull over my mind in a "studying" capacity, but makes me think nonetheless:
Suits (netflix show about lawyers, it's presented like a series of tense conversations where a cast of asshole lawyers yell at each other in their offices then storm out, over and over again, ad nauseum, i love it)
Funny shows - Silicon Valley, American Vandal, Middleditch and Schwartz, whatever James Acaster has ever spoken in any form at all (they're FUNNY)
Mistborn (book series by brandon sanderson. visually everything is grey/black and i will never draw it but it rocks)
Show Me The Money (korean hip hop survival show. insane and stupid. what more could you want)
Our Flag Means Death (banger. i'm not gay enough to draw OFMD fanart and do it justice)
Dimension 20, Game Changer, Noise Boys (I'm a BLM stan)
3 body problem (love 2 shill it 24/7, but i don't like drawing rockets and black holes)
Omniscient Readers Viewpoint (webnovel. I haven't read the webtoon. I do want to draw MC one day only because the webtoon and fanart usually makes him look handsome which conflicts with my favourite thing about him: that he is canonically really ugly)
Most songs I listen to (I'm not really directly inspired by music! I like to jam out and enjoy listening to it, but I'm generally immune to its mood/thought-altering properties)*
*except Must Have Been The Wind by Alec Benjamin, I still cry every time i hear it and ive never experienced this with any other song i don't know why

Oo question 10!! I know you do alot of art focusing on fashion so I'm curious about this question!!
10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw
HOW CAN YOU ASK ME TO PICK! I LOVE THEM ALL! I LOVE HOW EACH PIECE COMES TOGETHER TO FORM THE FULL OUTFIT!
bags (they're just so.. open for experimentation! they're like little houses for ur stuff, and often outfits start out with a bag idea that i then design around)
also u didn't ask but i wanna announce that my least favourite thing to draw is EARRINGS they are fun accents to add to an outfit. However because they are small i have to zoom in to draw them and i don't like zooming in. and when I zoom back out it looks crinkly

Weirdly Specific Artist Ask Game
Didn't see a lot of artist ask games, wanted to make a silly one.
(I wrote this while sick out of my mind last year and it's been collecting dust in my drafts, I might as well let it run free) 1. Art programs you have but don't use
2. Is it easier to draw someone facing left or right (or forward even)
3. What ideas come from when you were little
4. Fav character/subject that's a bitch to draw
5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself
6. Anything that might inspire you subconsciously (i.e. this horse wasn't supposed to look like the Last Unicorn but I see it)
7. A medium of art you don't work in but appreciate
8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in
9. What are your file name conventions
10. Favorite piece of clothing to draw
11. Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what
12. Easiest part of body to draw
13. A creator who you admire but whose work isn't your thing
14. Any favorite motifs
15. *Where* do you draw (don't drop your ip address this just means do you doodle at a park or smth)
16. Something you are good at but don't really have fun doing
17. Do you eat/drink when drawing? if so, what
18. An estimate of how much art supplies you've broken
19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)
20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy
21. Art styles nothing like your own but you like anyways
22. What physical exercises do you do before drawing, if any
23. Do you use different layer modes
24. Do your references include stock images
25. Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by
26. What's a piece that got a wildly different interpretation from what you intended
27. Do you warm up before getting to the good stuff? If so, what is it you draw to warm up with
28. Any art events you have participated in the past (like zines)
29. Media you love, but doesn't inspire you artistically
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated
