The reason I think of 2012 Donnie as being the third oldest isn't entirely because of how Raph messes with him, or his strong middle child energy that repeatedly makes itself known, or how Leo and Raph are more invested in their training than him and Mikey, or how he interacts with Mikey in a way that he doesn't with the others.
Tumblr media
It's because of how easily he's swayed and influenced by his brothers.
Donnie is often seen as the type to ruminate extensively over what would be the right thing to do and how to do something the right way, a habit that Leo is well known for exhibiting as well. This is best exampled by when he got on Mikey's case for not properly defending against seoi nage. Even though Mikey's manner of fighting and defending are effective, it's not satisfactory to Donnie because it wasn't the proper way of doing things.
Tumblr media
And, on Leo's end, we see it best exampled by him wanting his brothers to do things 'the right way' instead of 'their way'. It's something the two occasionally have to be reminded not to do, both to others and themselves, but getting things done in a manner that's expected of them is something they take pride in. It ties in with Donnie's ceaseless desire to be accurate about things, not because he necessarily needs to, but because he likes to be accurate and it's important to him on a personal level.
This goes hand in hand with Donnie exuding a strong sense of responsibility that not even Raph displays too often unless Leo is out of commission. We see this a lot in how he usually sticks by Leo when patrolling or surveying a situation, where as Raph and Mikey tend to hang back and fool around while counting the minutes.
Tumblr media
Beyond that though, Donnie held Splinter's words in high regard when he told him Timothy was his responsibility, and he sided with Leo about bringing the mutated squirrels to the lair, the complete opposite of Raph and Mikey who were vehemently opposed to the idea. He worked ceaselessly to create retromutagen for Kirby and Karai, and he ran himself ragged working to find a cure for the Shredder's brain worms. There was no guarantee that he would've ever figured these out, especially after many failed attempts (and he never could create a cure for the worms), but he stuck to the tasks he assigned himself because he felt a strong responsibility to aid those he cares for and wanted to keep his word.
Just like Leo.
Of course he gets quite a bit of that from Raph as well, but it's as clear as a window recently lathered with windex that Raph had a much bigger influence on Donnie's temperament. He easily gets agitated under stress, or no stress whatsoever as we saw when he blew up over something as small as Mikey spilling popcorn on him, and he complains quite a lot or is quick to snap when things aren't going his way (yet another thing Raph does).
Tumblr media
More than the tendency to dish out sarcastic comments and insults like it's Halloween, they're also the only ones to doubt Leo's leadership and they don't hold back one bit. Raph may be the most vocal, but Donnie exhibited leader tendencies long before the S2 finale and, like Raph, isn't fond of being told what to do if it doesn't align for him. The internal conflict in Follow the Leader was heavily instigated by Raph not wanting to fight like Leo, with Donnie all too easily falling into step with him and convincing Mikey to follow suit for a brief stint. It's moments like these that puts Donnie's desire to do things the right way on the back burner and brings forth his desire to do things his right way.
The biggest thing, or person, that made Donnie go back and forth between Leo and Raph though, was Karai.
When Donnie is first introduced to her, he immediately dislikes her for her carefree nature that puts those around her in a dangerous situation, as well as her lack of regard for anyone other than herself. And then, when Leo reveals that she's in the Foot, he has all the more reason to dislike and distrust her, something that everyone agrees on to albeit varying degrees.
Funnily enough though, when Karai tries to form an alliance with the turtles to fight the Kraang, Donnie, despite him preaching about her not being trustworthy minutes prior, sides with Mikey when Leo looks to them for an answer while Raph still remains suspicious of the situation.
Tumblr media
Then, when Karai approaches them and claims to believe Splinter is her father, Donnie sides with Leo, despite his previous misgivings about her in The Manhattan Project Part 1. Him and Raph were the most outspoken about her upbringing and current place in their lives as a villain as they grappled with the fact that she's Splinter's daughter. But this time, he wholeheartedly believed her and trusted her to some extent, and he's as shocked as Leo and Mikey when she confesses to them. Her moment of betrayal was just enough for Donnie to go back to Raph's side and question Leo's desire to find and rescue her. The two don't want to bother with her anymore, but they still follow their leader when it's clear that Leo isn't changing his mind.
Even though I just chronicled Donnie flip flopping between Leo and Raph, I did also mention him siding with Mikey on one instance, and their long story with Karai wasn't the only one. When they get pulled into an alternate dimension reminiscent of feudal Japan with an anthropomorphic rabbit as their only guide, they have to rely on Usagi while aiding him on his journey with Kintaro, but Leo gets fed up with his leadership being undermined (as well as being thrust into trouble they didn't ask for) and orders his brothers to follow him while they find a way out of this dimension. Mikey is the first to speak up about how dangerous (and idiotic really) Leo's idea sounds since they're in unfamiliar land, and Donnie immediately says Mikey's right, showing that he also wasn't keen on traversing with no clear destination in sight. They were better off trusting Usagi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Knowing when to trust someone isn't the only way Mikey influenced Donnie, as he also directly and indirectly encourages Donnie to think outside the box whenever he's struggling to figure something out. Of course there's the obvious one of learning how to fight without thinking, but there's also Mikey's habit of using unconventional means to reach an intended result, as well as him easily pointing out the obvious without the intricacies and convoluted mess of a situation distracting him from it.
What is arguably the most interesting influence Mikey had on Donnie was learning to give someone a second chance when they've wronged you the first time.
Tumblr media
Mikey put this on display when Slash returned during S3 in the fight against the Kraang. Though things seemed fairly neutral towards the end of Newtralized!, Leo is immediately wary of and angry with Slash appearing before them after their last two run-ins with him, something Slash expresses guilt over and apologizes for. Leo is still antagonistic and distrusting towards him when the Mutanimals make it clear they're on the good side, but Mikey comes forth and tells his brother that everyone deserves a second chance to prove themselves, and this is Slash's second chance. Leo doesn't want to ally himself with Slash, but Mikey's insistence is enough for him to put aside their differences and prioritize Earth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Donnie does the same for the Fugatoid. When it's revealed that the black hole generator was his creation, the Fugatoid emphasizes as much as he can that he regrets creating the device and handing it over to beings who only wanted to abuse its power, but Leo is again the main one to doubt him, with Raph seconding him. Donnie leaps in to put out the fire, preaching exactly what Mikey stated a season ago about giving someone a second chance, and April and Mikey jump in to back the Fugatoid up. Leo is unfortunately too stubborn to heed their words, though he doesn't attempt to force anyone on his side either. Donnie had absolutely no reason to try and convince Leo other than the fact that the Fugatoid has been helping them this whole time, and was honest with them about his previous mistakes.
He didn't have to tell them the truth, but he did, and that was all Donnie needed to believe they weren't being used by the Fugatoid.
There are likely other instances of the guys pulling Donnie in a direction different from the one he'd typically choose, and Donnie occasionally exhibits similar behaviors to Mikey when the youngest turtle is convinced to say or do something he otherwise wouldn't. But, for me personally, all of this supports the idea of Donnie being the third oldest and a middle child.

dancing waves.
Pairing: Rise!Leonardo x Reader Word Count: 1,155 words Warnings: None
Tumblr media
“You told me,” you screech, “that nothing at a mystic beach would try to kill me!”
“No, I told you that nothing on this beach will kill you,” Leo says, arm windmilling to cut another portal open through the sand. “Not when NEON LEON is here!”
He laughs. You do not.
“LEO –”
The ground quakes.
“And in we go!”
With a grin way too gleeful for someone about to be slurped up by a giant worm with teeth, Leo tackles the two of you into the portal.
Everything is a blinding whirl of blue and tangled limbs and the next thing you know, you have a mouth full of cold sand and the plastron of one about-to-be-hunted-for-sport turtle digging into your back. The sand tingles strangely – magically – on your tongue, so you spit it out quickly and wriggle out from under Leo to scrape off the leftover bits with your fingernails. With any luck, you won’t turn into a sandcastle or something.
Another mystic beach. You pin a dangerous glare onto Leo.
His eyes nervously dart around before meeting yours, bright and confident. “Would you look at that!” he chirps. “A reverse beach. I gotta say, this one’s waaaay better than the others.”
With a stubborn huff, you cut your gaze away from him to appraise the beach. It’s tiny, secluded, two-thirds of it surrounded by cliffs. The sand is smooth and blue against your skin, tangles of seagrass sprouting up in clusters around you. Strange-looking fish drift about in the air. And a few yards away, rolling gently into the shore, are waves the color of tangerines.
The most striking detail, however, is the complete lack of man-slash-yokai-eating monsters.
Your fists slowly relax, though you keep your frown out of pride. “It’s fine … I guess.”
Leo snorts. He gets to his feet, then sticks out a hand to help you up. “Aw, c’mon,” he exclaims when you merely squint at him. “Am I seriously still on the chopping block?”
“Is this place really safe?” you grumble in lieu of an answer, causing his mouth to pinch into a pout. Still, you reluctantly accept his hand and heft yourself up.
“I dunno. Let’s walk around and find out.” He lifts his sword into the air and starts marching down the beach. “Don’t worry, we won’t stop until we find the best beach in the Hidden City that doesn’t result in serious injury and/or death!”
Keeping a firm grip on your hand (just in case something happens, you reason, so you don’t protest), he leads you along, scanning the sand and the water for potentially dangerous creatures. None of the ones you see pose any real threat, usually swimming or scuttling away once you draw near. After some thought, you and Leo also dip your toes into the orange water and find that the only thing strange about it is the color. It’s also warm, and you do your best to hide your delight.
“Is that a smile I see?”
Crap.
“No.”
“Oh-ho-ho, that was definitely a smile,” Leo preens, letting go of your hand to toss your bags and his sword to a spot further away from the water. “I, Leonardo, officially deem this beach turtle- and human-friendly. Which means …!”
With that, he sweeps you up onto his shoulder like a sack of potatoes and dashes towards the shore.
“Leo!” you shriek, but this time, delight underscores the name leaving your mouth. He skids to a stop once the water reaches above his waist, and your stomach swoops in that familiar way as he hoists you over his head. (Gosh, he’s strong.) “Don’t you d –”
He sucks in a deep breath and launches you into the air.
“YEET!”
For a split second, you’re flying, limbs flailing. Then the waves rush up to swallow you whole.
You resurface quickly enough, sputtering and laughing; Leo breaks into a grin as you leap up and try to dunk him underwater.
“You jerk!”
“What was that? ‘I forgive you’?” he yells, kicking and splashing back at you. “You accept my heartfelt apology and we’re best friends again? That’s great!”
“Your apology almost got me killed three times!”
“I’m sorrrry! But you’re still alive, right?” Leo chuckles, but there’s a note of guilt in his tone, and his smile fades. You blink. The horseplay ceases as he rubs the back of his head. “I swear the pamphlets didn’t say anything about shell traps or giant worms with teeth. I probably should’ve checked the socials before portaling us.”
“Yeah.”
“Yeah.” He looks down into the water, then glances up at you hopefully. “But this one is fun enough, right?”
“Fun enough to make up for everything, you mean?” you ask. He winces. “Fun enough to make up for the very important fundraiser that I worked on for three weeks and reminded you about for a whole week leading up to it, only for you to miss the whole thing because you ticked off a giant yokai in the Hidden City on purpose? Fun enough for me to forgive you?”
Leo swallows dryly, looking every bit as remorseful as he did last week. “Yeah …?” he says, voice small.
You stare at him. He shrinks beneath your gaze, and it’s impossible to tell whether the moisture on his forehead is sea or sweat.
Eventually, you break into a small smile and pat his shoulder. “It is.”
He slumps. “Oh, thank god.”
“But I’d also like pizza at Run of the Mill and a shot at your portal sword.” You glance enviously at the giant blade lying in the sand, gleaming underneath the sun.
Leo gives you a wary look. “Okay, you got a date for the pizza, but I dunno about letting you use my sword. Not to be a wet blanket, but you don’t exactly have the best track record with mystic weapons.”
“Just let me hold it while you make a portal, then.”
“That I can do. You got yourself a deal.” He winks.
Your face floods with heat. Panicked, you splash him in the face.
“Pfft – hey!”
“Race you to that weird-looking rock!” you shout, diving beneath the surface.
“I don’t think that’s a rock, but you’re so on!” you hear Leo shout back before he quickly follows suit. Phew.
For the rest of the afternoon, the two of you goof around on that little beach, racing and cliff jumping and sunbathing. And when the sun begins to dip beneath the horizon, Leo lets you portal to Run of the Mill, sort of, his hands covering yours the whole time, and he treats you to your favorite pizza with money he probably cajoled from Donnie. The anger and the guilt are put to the wayside, forgotten. It’s just how it is with you and Leo. You can never stay apart for too long.
(Truth be told, you probably forgave him the first time around, anyway.)

Something that I kind of noticed is that when the Turtles are trapped inside the Turtle Tank during the episode Cloak, and Swaggert we get a small insight into how they sort of act when they are stuck in stressful situation & are feeling overwhelmed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see that Donnie desperately is trying to fix the problem & get his family out of the Turtle Tank we have kind of seen Donnie jump to problem solving when dealing with situations in previous episodes as typically in stressful situations Donnie seems to kind of treat the situation as something he can fix or solve
Tumblr media
Donnie: I can fix this! I can fix this! I can totally fix this!
We see that Mikey is trying to distract himself by roasting marshmallows with a candle, which kind of gives a small insight to another side of Mikey's typically optimistic personality since while we do know that Mikey tends to try & look on the bright side of things it is also something he sort of uses to try to distract himself when he is upset about something
Tumblr media
Mikey: I can’t put a smile on this crumb sandwich. What hope do we have?
We see that Raph has resorted to smashing panels, Raph kind of typically using smashing to try & solve problems & in previous episodes of Rise we have sort of seen Raph try to smash his way out of problems which can be seen in the episode Man vs. Sewer when he smashes everything around him while stressed
Tumblr media
Raph: Time to panic!  I’m alone and panicking, panicking, panicking, panicking!
Meanwhile we see Leo curl into a ball, which is a habit that Leo seems to have where Leo will kind of curl into himself when feeling overwhelmed or stressed
Tumblr media
Leo: Locked in a cage, failed in our mission, held for ransom by the Foot, and none of us gave him grandchildren! Somehow I think he wanted more
It seems as though when stuck in a stressful situation or feeling overwhelmed Donnie will try to fix the problem, Mikey will try to distract himself from the problem, Raph will try to smash the problem & Leo will curl into himself.

The dynamic in Rise between the rest of the team and Leo is. so fucking funny. Because like you've got these three extremely talented individuals who all seem like perfectly reasonable people at first glance, right, but then if you squint hard enough you realize they're actually all batshit insane (affectionate) and the clown boy standing behind them is secretly their common sense.
Clown boy will occasionally put himself and the others in danger to Prove Himself or Prove Someone Wrong (see Minotaur Maze and the movie) but like otherwise... i think people forget Leo's overwhelmingly the voice of reason in most situations?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raph, Mikey, and Donnie are all incredibly powerful boys with very specific skill sets. They are also, as a direct result of this, the WORST decision-makers on god's green earth lmao. When presented with a problem, Raph will smash, Donnie will blow shit up, and Mikey will razzmatazz. They will all run straight toward death with the same oblivious enthusiasm of a dog about to run straight into a screen door. None of them realize this and all of them think they are Extremely Good At Problem-Solving.
And the guy cursed with the common sense to realize this is literally the LAST person anyone would expect.
When you look closely, the entirety of Rise is actually a chronicle of Leo trying to find new and creative ways to keep this team of superpowered fools alive while simultaneously white-knuckling his Cool Fun Guy persona so the others don't realize he's secretly the Boring Responsible One. Haha, you know what would be Cool and Fun, guys? Not going after the Spine Breaking Bandit lol. Getting home before the sun goes up lol. Evacuating that civilian lol. Not telling the guy dangling me off a roof "you won't, no balls" lol.
The sacred struggle of every iteration of Leonardo is thanklessly wrangling the most trigger-happy siblings in the world, and Rise Leo has not escaped it. He just does an occasional shenanigan to avoid detection and his brothers fall for it every time.

We know from the episode Mind Meld that Donnie gave his family chess code names for missions but something I think is neat is that in the first episode & the episode Bullhop we can see that Raph has also given his family members special code names
Tumblr media
Raph: Yellow Submarine are we clear?
April: Affirmative Red Rover
Tumblr media
Raph: Purple Rain, do you see the target?
Raph gave himself, April & Donnie the code names Red Rover, Yellow Submarine & Purple Rain respectively which are all song titles. Raph has actually been seen referencing different song titles within other parts of the series as well.
Tumblr media
Raph: Jumpin’ Jack Flash!
In the episode Newsworthy Raph yells out ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash!’ in surprise & Jumpin’ Jack Flash is actually a song by the Rolling Stones so that combined with the fact that Red Rover is a song by Rosie Thomas, Yellow Submarine is a song by the Beatles & Purple Rain is a song by Prince, might show that Raph has an interest in music.
In the episode Al Be Back it’s said that Raph’s favourite music genre is R&B but the song titles he references might show the other kind of songs he likes to listen to as well since Yellow Submarine & Red Rover could be considered similar genre’s.
It’s pretty interesting that both Raph & Donnie choose code names for their family based off of their interests. Donnie gave his family chess code names & Raph gave his family song title code names.
