Learning Chinese with Lyrics: 李荣浩 - 戒烟
I’ve decided that at least for a couple months I’ll increasing my Learning Chinese with Lyrics posts to twice a month. I know they aren’t usually as popular, but I have a backlog of songs/lyrics to share!
As I mentioned in my recent Mandopop recs post, I’ve been listening to Li Ronghao lately. This song in particular has been stuck in my head a lot. I find the lyrics to be very moving and poignant. A sense of loss truly comes through. And thankfully, the lyrics are also relatively simple, so it’s easy to learn them. This song is nearly 5 minutes long, but it doesn’t feel too long or dragged out to me at all. To my knowledge, this song isn’t Li Ronghao’s biggest hit (that honor seems to go to 年少有为), but it’s still pretty popular. And my favorite by him right now.

Satori Reader (paid subscription, or limited free use)
A YouTube channel that includes stories (often folktales) for Japanese learners
Many people upload stories read aloud to YouTube, which can be found by searching up 朗読

One of my grandpa’s brothers recently passed away and my grandpa wants to hold a “Sorei Matsuri” for him. Thinking about that, I made this list of death-ancestor-funeral related words.
死亡 (しぼう/Shibou): Noun-Death; Mortality or Suru Verb- To die; pass away
告別式（こくべつしき/Kokubetsushiki): Farewell service
お通夜（おつや/Otsuya): Wake [Ceremony]
故人（こじん/Kojin): The deceased
祖霊 (それい/Sorei): Ancestral Spirit
祖神 (そしん/Soshin): Ancestor worshiped as a deity
氏神 (うじがみ/Ujigami): Patron god; Guardian deity
死霊 (しりょう/Shiryou): Spirit of a dead person; ghost; departed soul
神棚 (かみだな/Kamidana): Household (shinto) shrine
厨子 (ずし/Zuja): Miniature shrine with double doors (used to store important Buddhist items such as sutras, etc.); (in Okinawa) carved and decorated stone container for storing the bones of one’s ancestors
仏壇 (ぶつだん/Butsudan): Buddhist (household) alter
遺灰 (いはい/Ihai): Ashes of the deceased; remains from cremation

Navigating Your Phone in Chinese
A common tip you’ll see for language learning is to change your phone’s language. In the past, I was overwhelmed by all the new characters, so I didn’t feel that I was learning much, and I got frustrated easily when I couldn’t figure how to do something. Now that I’m finally at the point where I can very comfortably navigate my phone (iPhone) in Chinese, I thought I’d share some useful vocab.
Apps:
Contacts = 通讯录 tōngxùnlù - address book, directory
Notes = 备忘录 bèiwànglù - memorandum, memorandum book
Facetime = Facetime通话 tōnghuà - to talk over the phone, phone call
Calendar = 日历 rìlì - calendar
Calculator = 计算器 jìsuànqì - calculator
Reminders = 提醒事项 tíxǐng shìxiàng
