Godzilla: King of the monsters review
So...Godzilla is back for more, and does it well too!
I quite enjoyed this film and i have been enjoying the new american take on Godzilla in addition to the masterpiece of Shin Godzilla (that will need to be a completely separate review).
However in this review iā€™m not going to focus on the good points, i will focus on the bad points of the film because i feel like it is important to see what could be improved to help create a better representation of the art of film.
Without further ado, welcome to the review.
Strong opening, thought the opening accurately portrayed the carnage and destruction left after the end of the previous film and what it can do to the ā€˜typicalā€™ family. However the humans in the film are also, unfortunately, the worst part of the film (this is true of most Godzilla films so please see that i am not hating on this film, i am pointing out a franchise flaw).Ā
SPOILERS INCOMING!! So the plot has the husband of the family from the opening recruited to help track the device he and his wife made then the wife kept using after they agreed to scrap it. Now the reason he gets recruited is because theĀ ā€˜good factionā€™ in the film have no way of tracking the device.
jump to around an hour and 30/40 minutes into the film, the daughter has the device and is in a stadium broadcasting it to draw in the Kaiju, and then the signal from the device is picked up by the base theĀ ā€˜evil factionā€™ have been using, which is an abandoned base of the good faction. as its abandoned, key word ABANDONED, that means no one has been there in a long time and therefore it would be devoid of equipment. yes the base is able to track the signal from the device, meaning that the tech of the good faction has been able to track the signal the device emits, and therefore most of the human plot of the family is meaningless droll put into the film to give human conflict a reason.
If instead of the family theĀ ā€˜bad factionā€™ had developed the device then it would have been less distracting from the monsters of the film, which lets face it, is the reason i brought tickets, i didnā€™t come to see Millie Bobby Brown be underutilised as an actress, I came to see monsters fighting in these grandiose battles.
I will not go into detail of how the humans are more interesting and well portrayed having to deal with a bad situation in Shin Godzilla but i would recommend people see Shin Godzilla and take note of the real/heartfelt problems that characters are able to deal with when the villain is not humans, but the monsters themselves.
Thank you for reading.
