In 1835, writer Richard A. Locke at the New York Sun claimed an astronomer had discovered life on the moon. Locke suggested an expedition in a ship supported by hydrogen balloons. 

This illustration is from a portfolio of hand-tinted lithographs said to show the  “discovery of life on the moon.”

It’s on display (without animation) in @smithsonianlibraries‘ exhibition  “Fantastic Worlds: Science and Fiction, 1780–1910,” on display at the National Museum of American History.

Mayor McCheese — who became a McDonald’s character in 1971 — is in the collection of our National Museum of American History.

That is one sparkly ride.

This blinged-out bicycle is now on display at our National Museum of American History, but much of its previous life remains a mystery.

We don’t know a lot about its original owner, Mary Noble Wiley, or how she got the bicycle  — or if she ever rode it. It came to the museum 65 years ago and even the donor (Wiley’s son) had little knowledge of its history.

What we do know: The bicycle was made by Pope Manufacturing Company in 1896, and is embellished with gems and gold by Tiffany & Co. And it’s not the only one of its kind, as Tiffany ran an ad for similarly decorated bicycles in 1895.
