the only reason there is no oscar for best soundtrack compilation is that the academy knows they would have been obligated to give it to a twilight film five years in a row and these old ass elitist baby men were too cowardly and weak to do it
One of my biggest frustrations with Sierra Burgess is a Loser is that it is reminiscent of a fun 80s movie that doesn’t translate favorably to the present because of how glaringly problematic it is. And that’s perfectly fine. You can critique the hell out of something and still enjoy it or acknowledge the flaws in addition to the perks.
But we’re expected to overlook the fact that Sierra is a pretty terrible character, ignore how crappy she is to Dan (her token poc bestie) and how awful she was to Veronica based on an assumption. We’re supposed to not be turned off by the fact that she catfished Jamey, kissed him without consent, and pretended to be Deaf.
We’re supposed to sympathize or empathize with her because she spent most of the time projecting her insecurities onto others and assuming they wouldn’t like her because of how she looks especially Jamey who proved early on that wouldn’t be the case.
We’re supposed to think a mutual look and her sending Veronica a song ABOUT HERSELF and how insecure she is is an acceptable apology like her insecurities justify or excuse her actions.
We’re supposed to watch all of that and somehow root for her and root for her and Jamey to be together because we’re supposed to want the plus-sized band geek to get the hot guy in the end. Excluding the fact that she has significantly better chemistry with Veronica because you know, the thick girl never gets the guy and she deserves it (even when she clearly doesn’t deserve Jamey here).
We’re supposed to go along with all of this, and the second anyone so much as criticizes any of this and points out how problematic it is, they’re accused of fat-shaming or raining on the parade of big girls who needed rep, or judging Sierra harshly because she’s not skinny.
Sis, I don’t want you to have any kind of rep because you are so hard up for it that any rep will do. I want you to have good rep.
What difference does it make if Sierra didn’t have to change her personal appearance to get the guy if she had to catfish, manipulate, and hurt him? And while I liked Jamey, the man voice, man hands, and “you’re not everybody’s type but you’re my type” stuff was condescending af.
But we’re supposed to applaud this love story just because Sierra is a normal looking thick girl no matter how poorly it was executed. And if we don’t, well, we’re hating. But go off, I guess.
