I think what hurts me the most about Ellie’s story and her character in general is that even though most of what we see is killing and death and anger and sorrow she also has so much softness. She loves space and dinosaurs and animals and games and art and music. When she’s allowed a moment of peace she looks at the world with genuine wonder. She longs for a home and a family even though her past makes her feel like she needs to be defensive and put up walls. She plays with kids and dances with pretty girls. She steals toys not for herself but for her friend because she knows he wants them. She dances like a doofus and makes bad puns. And we are able to see all of this exist in spite of the suffering, in spite of the weight on her shoulders. She is capable of ruthless brutality but she is also capable of so much love and joy. It’s that duality that makes Ellie such a brilliant and heartbreaking character.
