Also, Tara is here!!! Tara, my love, best character. Like, Spike is probably my favorite, but Tara is for sure the best.

Btvs really went off with the Gentlemen, huh? I’m not sold on their straight jacket lackeys, but the Gentlemen themselves are the fucking creepiest fucks I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

Woof, I forgot about the episode Pangs. This aged like milk if the milk was already sour to start with. And it’s a plot relevant episode too with the Spike stuff so you can’t just quietly pretend it never happened.

There is something about Riley that just feels so… manufactured. And not Riley the person, Riley the character. Spike calls him Captain Cardboard and he is like a cardboard cutout of a man. And the printing quality was cheap enough that you can clearly see the little dots that make up the image.
I sarcastically referred to him as “Walmart Clark Kent from Iowa” but when I looked him up in the wiki just now he actually is from Iowa? I don’t think I remembered that, I think I just knew because he has just strong from Iowa vibes. And again, not Riley the person, Riley the character. He’s exactly the kind of Good Wholesome Boy (TM) that writers have be from Iowa to give quintessential Midwestern vibes without the baggage of Kansas. It probably has something to do with Captain Kirk being from Iowa too.
And like, he was designed to be the the anti-Angel, the opposite of Angel, and that’s not the worst place to start from, but when that remains the core of the entire character concept, it just rings hollow. And Angel is so thin as a character already, it’s like holding up a piece of cellophane to the mirror; it’s hard to be sure if there’s even anything there.

So I just saw a post by a random personal blog that said “don’t follow me if we never even had a conversation before” and?????? Not to be rude but literally what the fuck??????????
I’ve had people (non-pornbots) try to strike conversation out of nowhere in my DMs recently, and now I’m wondering if they were doing that because they wanted to follow me and thought they needed to interact first. I feel compelled to say, just in case, that it’s totally okay to follow this blog (or my side blog, for that matter) even if we’ve never talked before.
Also, I’m legit confused. Is this how follow culture works right now? It was worded like it’s common sense but is that really a thing?

I would also question if, for the sake of argument, Ed’s more cheerful demeanor in 1x10 was indeed supposed to be a symptom of suicidality, then how is Izzy telling him that he’s a shell of a man who should have been shot supposed to be a reasonable and helpful response to that situation. Honestly, if anything this read would only make Izzy’s behavior worse.
fascinated to see a sudden resurgence in "depression robe ed singing songs to the crew was actually unhealthy and izzy was right to stage a mental health intervention for his own good" discourse, only now that the show has spent a huge part of an entire season on clearly explicitly unambiguously establishing that ed wanting to quit piracy is a serious meaningful preference he's consistently had for ages, the argument has shifted from "it's obviously insane to want to stop being a pirate" to "if ed cleaning himself up and acting chipper in 2x02 was framed as a symptom of suicidality that has to be what's going on ANY time he ever acted cheerful." are you guys listening to yourselves

I don’t know if it was the director or the actress or what, but choices were made when it came to the portrayal of Veruca. A very… head-heavy performance.

So I think how the Xander/Cordelia relationship should have ended is we skip Xander asking Cordelia to be his date to Buffy’s birthday, so they have been exclusively secretly making out up until the point Willow sees them. After that happens Xander has a conversation with I guess Buffy or maybe Oz about his relationship with Cordelia and ultimately talks himself into wanting to pursue an actual romantic relationship with her, starts getting real excited about it even.
But he goes to talk to Cordy and she tells him — not overtly cruel but extremely blunt — that she’s been thinking it over and she realized that this whole time their relationship has been a secret, forbidden practically, and that was really sexy. It made Xander seem really sexy. But now people know about it and the magic’s gone; she just not attracted to Xander at all. Oh, but she doesn’t find him repulsive or anything! Not anymore. She just nothings him. It’s kind of like when she looks at Giles, except Giles has that sexy British accent. Anyway, they can still be friends. Well, not friends obviously, but she’ll still help them save the world and stuff. If they really need her. And she’s not too busy. Buffy can call her. Okay, nice chat, talk to you later.
This way Cordelia hasn’t really done anything wrong beyond her normal level of tactlessness but you can still see how this would be a pretty hurtful rejection for Xander. Enough so that when he goes back to sniping at her it’s as least as sympathetic as it’s always been. Much more sympathetic than going out of his way to be an asshole to her after he cheated on her indirectly leading to her being hospitalized.

I agree that fact that the mayor finally provided Faith with the material security that she need and also the parental attention and approval that she has been craving is really key to understanding Faith’s character and why she did what she did. Where the story falls down for me is we don’t get any reason for why they failed nor any real reflection and regret for that failure (at least not in s3 where it is needed; there may be some in future season that I’m not remembering atm).
And honestly, I don’t really fault any of the teens for not thinking to step up nor do I fault Joyce; Faith was not their responsibility. It’s Giles and Wesley who failed Faith severely when it was literally their job to watch out for her. Kendra was adopted by her Watcher, and iirc, Watchers becoming the legal guardian for their slayer/potential is the preferred operating procedure when possible, so there’s no reason it shouldn’t have occurred to them to take her in.
Really I think it could have worked really well if we had just seen the two of them trying and Faith rebuffing them. That still leaves plenty of room for guilt over whether they failed her by not trying harder and it could also speak to Faith’s issues. We see her respond to Gwendolyn Post’s super tough love act and the mayor somewhat inadvertently gets past her defenses because the relationship was something Faith was initially able to mentally categorize as transactional (see”thanks sugar daddy”). But Giles offering to let her stay with him from a place of genuine compassion and desire to take care of her could very believably raise Faith’s hackles and make her defensive about how she can take care of herself. And of course she’s already against Wesley from the minute he shows up, no surprise if any efforts from him are immediately pushed away.
So I think you’re broadly right about what the show is trying to do, but as it stands the only reason I can glean for why Giles & Wesley didn’t offer Faith a better place to live is because the plot & character arcs needed them not to, which is a weak writing choice.
It is insane to me that this show wants us to believe that everyone just left Faith to rot in that motel room until the Mayor stepped in to give her a place. A) That reflects really badly on both Giles and Wesley that neither of thought to arrange for better accommodations for Faith when watching out for the Slayer is their entire job. And B) what actually would have happened is on the first night when Buffy invited Faith over to dinner, Joyce would have asked Faith where she was staying while she was in town. Faith would have told her the motel and of course, Joyce would have none of that and insist that Faith stay with them. And Faith, poor affection starved child that she is, would have ended up attaching herself to Joyce like a limpet.

Spike’s character introduction is like, “You need to know two things about this man: 1) he is a total badass and 2) he is an absolute simp,” and honestly they were so right for that.
Spike!!! Honestly such a great character introduction to have him come in full vamp face, dust a guy, and then start bragging about killing Slayers, only to have his face melt back into human and run over all concerned when his unwell girlfriend walks in.

16- if you could change anything in the show what would you change?
Salty ask game
(I’m guessing this was a question for BtVS; if I’m wrong you can send in another ask and I’ll re-answer for the correct fandom.)
Okay, so I feel like the spirit of this question is about a specific event or plotline or character arc or what have you, but my real answer is a bit more nebulous. I would want to adjust the show so the the narrative’s perception of how good/nice our core 4 mains and how good/nice they actually act were in closer alignment.
For Willow, I’m generally fine with her behavior, but I wish that the narrative was more aware of when she does cross the line (prior to s6 obv). Like, I don’t necessarily mind that an upset and jealous Willow privately refers to Cordelia as a “skanky ho” shortly after finding out she and Xander are dating, just so long as the narrative framing doesn’t cheer her on for doing it.
Giles and Buffy I would like to be about 10-15% nicer. They’re fine most of the time, but on occasion, particularly when dealing with a character that the narrative has decided is supposed to be bad/unlikeable, they are too judgey and dismissive/mean.
Then Xander needs a huge overhaul in both directions. He needs to tone the misogyny and homophobia way the fuck down, and I want the narrative to also understand him to be the more close-minded and judgmental one of the group. Having him be the more black-and-white thinker who is always pro-killing demons and least willing to consider nuances and the potential personhood of non-human beings is interesting and an important character role to have in the group (though pairing him with an ex-demon is a bit 😬 in that case unless we character develop him away from that over time). It’s just that the narrative needs to be aware that’s the role Xander is filling rather than trying to push him as the relatable, dependable heart of the group.

I understand the appeal of fics where Spike doesn’t get his soul back and is still excepted by Buffy and the gang, but not for me, thanks. My man worked *hard* to get that soul; let him keep it.

Don’t worry Buffy, you dodged a fucking bullet not getting into that pop culture class because that professor is clearly the fucking worst. This man pausing his whole lecture because one person made one whispered comment to her neighbor in the middle of a decent sized lecture hall — it’s amazing that he even heard her at all to be honest — to force this poor girl to stand up so he could shame her in front of everyone and then he’s going to accuse *her* of wasting everyone’s time and sucking all the energy out of the room??? If there wasn’t space in the class before then there will be now; I’d be dropping that class like it was on fucking fire.
