Im waiting for Alecto to have a plot twist where it turns out Kiriona literally cant die and it only stuck at the end of Gideon because Harrow had her soul in her for a few months. Just some flashback montague of Kiriona dying in the lychtor trials, getting pushed off a balcony by Harrow at age 12, the nerve gas. She just keeps coming back like John does and no one cared enough about her to notice. Obligatory Umbrella Academy reference where John puts her in an electric chair and Cats in the Cradle plays while he teaches her how to control it to jumpscare people who kill her
OH I think that's a possibility! If Harrow hadn't chewed off her soul, babygirl would've stood up and walked it off.
The other possibility is that she CAN die but only when she choosess to, and the spikes stuck because it was a willing sacrifice

rereading the corpse heist and Nona is SO jealous of Kiriona. not only is there the extremely funny moment where Nona wishes Pyrrha had punched her mother out an airlock, when Nona and Pyrrha find the corpse she keeps noticing how Pyrrha looks at Kiriona in a way she never, ever looked at Nona (who can read all body language). Tenderness and possessiveness and wanting.
Nona has spent 6 months being Pyrrha’s kid. being Pyrrha’s. being proud of being Pyrrha’s. but now Nona is faced with the idea that even though she knows Pyrrha loves her…. maybe Pyrrha wanted a different kid? and Nona is 10,000 years old and almost 19 and also 6 months, but that’s a lot to emotionally process at any age. no wonder she immediately decided that Gideon was the worst person in the universe

Jod deserves everything he's got coming to him but also. The loneliness he's feeling right now. Have you ever noticed, when you have a friend, how the whole world is friendlier? Say they go to college with you. The whole campus is alive with the possibility of them somewhere on it. An entire city hundreds and thousands of miles away is represented by another, and the whole city is them and it's welcoming because of that one person.
Ten thousand years he's spent living a lie of his own creation and the lie was very simply that his friends agreed with and forgave him. Ten thousand years of an entire galaxy trying to eat him but knowing he had people out there. Even when it was just three of them.
He has nobody to thank but himself. But holy shit. That kind of sudden loneliness after going so far to avoid it for so long... That's soul destroying. That's a emptiness ten thousand years overdue and magnified past comprehension.

More proto Lyctors: I don’t think the original purpose of assembling everyone at Canaan House was discovering Lyctorhood. I think the purpose, originally, was just to figure out how necromancy works. Because John didn’t know.
Everything he did early on was trial and error, and after absorbing Alecto he became so powerful he could brute force anything. The necromantic theorems everyone in the Houses uses were developed later, John never needed any of that. He had no frame of reference for how ‘normal’ adepts users could channel the power he unlashed, because he’s way beyond normal.
Tumblr media
Thinking of this bit. In NtN, John tried for a hot second to approach his new death powers like he was going to write a peer-review paper. They do corpse experiment. He tries to make it sound like a legit science. Of course it goes nowhere because the world is ending, but also because you can’t apply scientific principles to something that can’t be reproduced by others. Post Resurrection, though? Sure. Basically, he was putting the gang back together, out of affection but also because he really needed lab buddies to help him nail down the framework of something that for him was as intuitive as breathing.
A corollary to that, IMO, is that I don’t think John was sitting on a well of information that he refused to share. I think even by canon era he doesn’t have the sophisticated grasp of nercomancy-as-a-science that the Lyctors do, and I really don’t think he was sitting on the secret to perfect Lyctorhood the whole time. He watched everyone misunderstand the process because he didn’t reveal the full truth about what Alecto was, but I also very much doubt he knew what the “human” version of absorbing another soul would be until the others figured it out. I doubt he even knows an alternative is viable instead of just theoretically possible; I predict John will be very surprised to learn something like Paul exists.

One thing I really appreciate about the Locked Tomb series is that if Tamsyn so chose, she could rewrite the series from Ianthe's point of view and it would still read as a new series. The books we have are already different on every reread - and yet.

I know no one cares about Naberius Tern but that is exactly the problem.
Every single lyctor we have seen so far is undone by killing their caviller. Mercymorn makes it very, very clear that she has been carrying the grief of killing Cristabel for ten thousand years. Palamedes doesn't say he would rather die than kill Cam to become a lyctor because he is busy dying rather than killing Cam to become a lyctor. The unspoken rule is that lyctorhood can only be obtained by killing the person most important to you.
Unless you are Ianthe.
Ianthe is the only lyctor who isn't in a constant state of mourning. She has achieved immortality and cosmic power without losing the person closest to her.
Incidentally the person Ianthe loves the most is Corona, who also doesn't care what happened to Babs. Ianthe chats with Corona while wearing Babs discarded corpse and they banter about it.
Ianthe essentially made her Faustian bargain with counterfeit money and I think eventually she is going to have to pay up

I love how Gideon has no idea how OP Harrow is. Like, she's fucking proud of her, at the end, but she just hasn't seemed to have clued in that her girl is not normal. By several degrees of magnitude.
Look at this, here:
Tumblr media
Harrow calls bullshit on Dulcinea having turned Pro into a Beguiling Corpse because it should not be possible for a single necromancer to do it. Not even a necromancer in the prime of their power. And Cytherea considers this a fair hole in her story, and amends it to say that it wasn't her, it was all the heads of the Seventh House working together.
Harrow completed this spell twice, by herself, at the age of ten.

i have become unhealthily obsessed with trying to categorise the Nine Resurrection Beasts
• In Harrow the Ninth, chapter two, John Gaius tells Harrow there are nine Beasts. He says that they have killed five and that there are three left. Harrow mentally notes that the maths don't add up, but knowing that Alecto is an RB makes it compute (3 out there, 5 dead, 1 imprisoned). Although frustratingly, John only enumerates three of the dead (Two, Six, and Eight), leaving six RBs left to sort; one is Alecto, two are dead, and three are threats.
• In Harrow the Ninth, chapter thirty-six, the Lyctors encounter the Seventh RB, and in planning for this showdown recount some of their previous attempts at fighting RBs; the late Two, Six, and Eight, as well as One and Four. This confirms that Seven is alive, and that One and Four are not Alecto. In this same chapter, Seven is described as both "brood of [Six]" and "packmate of [Eight]", implying some close connection between this string of numbers but nothing concrete.
• In Nona the Ninth, Nona/Alecto speaks with the Seventh Beast, and refers to it by name; Varun. With Waruna being the old Malay name for Neptune, and Varuna being the Hindu God of the seas, this pretty solidly points to the Seventh RB being the revenant soul of Neptune. Varun recognises Nona/Alecto as being the revenant of Earth also.
So all that tells us is;
Described as "a great and incoherent machine".
Dead.
Unknown.
Described as "a humanoid creature with a beautiful face".
Unknown.
Dead.
Alive. Revenant of Neptune.
Dead.
Unknown.
Two of 1, 3, 4, 5, and 9 are dead. My guess is 1 and 4; Mercymorn doesn't explicitely say that they are killed but they're mentioned alongside the three confirmed kills. One of 3, 5, or 9 must be Alecto. My guess is 9; simply due to the "the Ninth" suffix for Nona and Alecto needing to refer to something. Also, it's plausible that her identity as an RB went unknown until after the other eight had been indexed.
So if you add some speculation (canon in bold, guesswork in italics), you get;
Dead
Dead
Alive
Dead
Alive
Dead
Alive (Neptune)
Dead
Alive (Earth)
The trail runs cold there. The only thing left to do is speculate wildly based on the physical descriptions of the Beasts let's go!
The Second Beast "spewed quicksilver...". Quicksilver is the planetary metallic name for mercury, so 2 = Mercury. The Fourth Beast had "a beautiful face". Beauty = love and love = Venus so 4 = Venus. The First Beast had "swords for wings". Swords are for war and so 1 = Mars. The Sixth Beast had "enormous sphincters". So. 6 = Uranus. The Eighth Beast "was red, and it had a single eye". Possibly referring to the Great Red Spot? So 8 = Jupiter.
And... I think that's about as far as I can go.
Dead (Mars)
Dead (Mercury)
Alive (Saturn/Pluto)
Dead (Venus)
Alive (Saturn/Pluto)
Dead (Uranus)
Alive (Neptune)
Dead (Jupiter)
Alive (Earth)
If any of this wild speculation disagrees with yours. I fully believe that Tamsyn has left us enough breadcrumbs to connect the planets, the houses, the saints, and the beasts together and we just need to find them
...
oh, and what about the Sun?
