SCREEN - Final Edits - ART & FEAR
1.I have changed the audio completely. Instead of layering the voices on top of each other, I have place different audio recordings one after the other to make them flow. (image below)
Also, I have downloaded a wider variety of media news voices from different countries and mixed them with songs about “hand washing”, coughing sounds and others.
Tumblr media
2.I have made applied transition between the videos to make them flow as I realised that that drastic separation between the videos was annoying to watch. Now, while the previous video is ‘dissolving’, the next starts. (image below)
Tumblr media
3. While I had previously decided that the video should be on a loop, I have now decided to give it a beginning and an end. The beginning is the Brexit countdown ( in which I kept the original audio as I think is very powerful). The reason for this is because when this project began the media focus was all about Brexit, while subsequently it became about corona ( as it is shown on the video). I have kept the jellyfishes at the end as supposed/apparent moment of quiet but is not. Although jellyfishes look very beautiful and peaceful are actually a symbol of the consequences of global warming, they are polluting the oceans causing destruction of sea life the as they can survive in any water, with low oxygen and they are basically immortal.
The viewer can come into the room anytime and watch the full video ( it is only 3 minutes) .
4. I have reduced the introduction text into a few sentences and wrote a small “please note” to notify the viewer about the satirical approach as I know that some people might take it as offensive.
(image below)
Tumblr media
However, I did not change the title! :

5. Instead of using Artsteps to make a virtual tour of the mirror room ( which to be honest was impossible unless I knew how to use certain softwares), I have decided to use my craft skills :)  to make my own mirror room by using 4 square mirrors, the computer screen to project the video and the 360 camera ( which thank god I had borrowed from Connor before the lockdown). I put together the 4 mirrors with the tape and placed the open side in front of the computer screen and played the video. I placed the 360 camera inside the ‘room’ and controlled it through my phone.(images below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The video was hard to export and edit but I managed to place and sync the audio to it and upload it to Youtube. If I could go back I would try to make it a better quality but I guess as a mock up it should be fine.(images below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would definitely used this technique in future!
LINK TO THE MIRROR ROOM https://youtu.be/yt7CNNkG6EM
ps:I have also tried to use mirrored one-way film, which is a material with the mirror on one side, and you can see through the other side. I bought it and I have placed the camera on the outside looking in (no camera inside the room) but it was way too dark!
6. CRITICAL SELF EVALUATION
I have to admit that making this project it’s been quite of a challenge.
First of all, when I started it I had no idea that we would be in these unfamiliar circumstances. However, it is exactly because of this situation, that has been unfolding week by week until now, that allowed me to experience “live” the evolutions of these events and record them.
My strength I'd say it is "to have known" since the beginning that I wanted this project to be about the current times, therefore the feel to make something responsive.
Initially, I felt inundated by a broader range of events (Brexit, Covid-19, Climate Change and more) and the plan was to represent exactly what was happening in my head. This is when I had the idea of making the mirror room, where the viewer would just enter it and have that overwhelming/disturbing/claustrophobic feeling that I have, being bombarded every single day by media news. It is been interesting to experience how quickly it all became about Covid-19 and this is when I decided to focus on it.
My biggest problem has been the constant unpredictable changes of events ( such as when Boris Johnson got sick with Covid-19) that made the process very slow and uncertain until the very end. Still, at this time, I am not sure if it will upset someone.
I realised where my weaknesses lie while working on the video and ( particularly ) audio technical skills. I am not sure this is because I did not have a proper introduction to them or is it just because is not for me. Either way, I have enjoyed learning Premiere Pro and I will keep practising with it as it made me realise how limited my skills as a photographer sometimes can be.
Organisational is always been my bigger strength, in fact, before the lockdown, I borrowed a Canon handycam, a 360 Insta camera, triggers and lights from the store. Without these, my project would have been impossible to produce. Also, I have used my crafty skills to assemble a DIY model of a mirror room to reconstruct what I would have done in the gallery space.
I only wish I had more time so I could keep documenting the end of this pandemic as I have been (accidentally) documenting it since the beginning.
The most fascinating aspect of this project is that I had absolutely no power over the development of these events so I just sat in my house, watch it happen it and record it in my own way.
Overall, it’s been an interesting, sometimes difficult and fun journey in which the comments and critiques given by my friends, family and groups tutorial have been crucial in helping me to comprehend my insecurities and be proud of my strengths.

Art & Fear - Tutorial
03/04/2020
After having my tutorial with Rachel I have re-watched the video of Doug Aitken's "New Era", The kaleidoscopic film installation featuring the 89-year-old Martin Cooper, who invented the mobile phone in 1973.
Video : Doug Aitken's "New Era" taken by me at the Transformers exhibition at 180The Strand, London.
I love the play with mirrors and screens across the huge room
As Rachel made me notice, images on mirrors are flipped, so I have flipped my video in premiere pro and attempted to make a new mirror room test  with the audio on Artsteps here is the link : https://www.artsteps.com/view/5e872fe0b733f3186e902a1b
Tumblr media
Although it still does not look like a mirror room the effect makes more sense now. It also feel very claustrophobic, which I like.

Art & Fear - VIDEO TEST + AUDIO TEST + VIRTUAL GALLERY TEST
What I need to work on:
Still working on the audio - maybe add some more people talking
More video sequences to add - found other videos from youtube to include and made more recording in the house
Give more sense/meaning in the way videos are mixed
Working on the project proposal
Also, I have tried to do a rough test of the virtual environment of the mirror room.
I am still trying to figure out how Artsteps work, but so far I haven’t managed to make the room the way I want it and upload the full audio as it is too heavy. I will keep working on it.
So far this is how is looking
Tumblr media
Entrance
Tumblr media
Inside the mirror room - 3 screens and mirrors on the floor - ceiling and behind screens
I have placed 3 screens (see pictures above) because if I place mirrors all over I don’t get the reflections and I am not sure that it gives the idea if I wanted it to be ( I am not even sure that these mirror textures I found on the internet look like actual mirrors!)
I like the idea of the 3 screens but it is not how I imagined being.
I am thinking to place only 1 big screen on the main wall and mirrors everywhere else. Obviously, they won’t be reflecting anything as they're not real mirror, but at least it is closer to my idea. ( see this link - https://www.artsteps.com/view/5e85b639a71cf41808b5a6d8 )

Today I have been working on my video project adding some more video found from Youtube. I have also been trying to record around my house but it is very hard since there is not much happening.
I have tried to use Adobe Dimension to create a virtual room although I have still a lot to learn.
On the other hand, I have found out that there the Italian Pavilion at the Milan Expo 2015 did exactly reinstallation that I have in mind. There is an amazing mirrors room, where many video clips of the iconic Italian landscapes and art cities are played, the visitor is really surrounded by beauty
Here is the link to see the Virtual Installation :
https://www.virtualiter.net/vr/expo2015/italy/vr1/
The picture below shows EXACTLY what I had in mind but in a much smaller and more claustrophobic room.
Tumblr media
I would have liked a room similar to the one in the image below ( but with mirrors on the ceiling and on the floor)
Tumblr media
Still working on how to edit the sequences
I have not been able to make any more videos outdoor due to Covid-19
I will try to create a gallery virtual space to demonstrate how I would like my video work to be shown.

Working on the Audio in Premiere Pro
Chosen audios from Youtube Videos like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMrtLsQbaok

Opened them with mixing audio program Ableton to mix them
Transferred them into premiere pro and add heartbeat sound at the beginning ( Brexit countdown) and will probably use it at the end (jellyfish)
Try to create a virtual guided tour of my installation with https://www.artsteps.com/

Professional Practice - so far
So far I have been assisting the photographer Rut Blees Luxemburg for 17h.
After the first meeting on the 14/02, I met with Rut 2 more times to do more archival work ( picture below) and work on her archival website https://marcelforart.com/ ( A great site that Rut showed me to Create a website, but most importantly to keep your audience up to date and manage your portfolio in minutes.)
Tumblr media
I had to match every negative with the contact prints and label them.
Rut gave me lots of freedom in doing this as she thinks I was doing a great job already. She had plenty of negatives to organise and I have been happy to help. Doing this work gave me a chance to look at different works made with large format cameras, talk about concept and ideas, ask many questions about photography in general and get great tips.
Tumblr media
To thank me, Rut gave me 2 of her books/projects and signed them for me. What a great pleasure!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And this is the one she gave me the previous time, together with a bottle of wine from her own vineyard in Germany! ( pictures below)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were planning to meet last week and this week to work on more stuff, but unfortunately due to Covid-19, it won’t be possible. It is also very sad that Photo London has been canceled as I was hoping to attend it with her...

Installation Video test - 1
Booked room AG.07 to test my video installation.
I really like the reflection that the projection makes on the walls, but I would still like mirrors on every side. Ideally, the room should be like the one I have created with the white panels, claustrophobic and the projection reflecting everywhere,
Unfortunately, I could not practice further as the room was only free last week until they had to close down uni due to Covid-19.

Dissertation presentation
Great feedback on Wednesday after presenting my idea for the dissertation
Neil liked the originality of it and the potential for development.
The reason why I decided to use this topic for my dissertation is that I have always been interested in how the Art Business Market works. My initial curiosity and reason why I got the book in the first place it’s because I was interested in 2 artists that sell art for millions of $ and I wanted to know WHY some kind of photographs is so expensive, HOW photographers get the privilege to be there and WHY do they get selected. As I started reading the book “Art Business Today” I came across the chapter that talks about The Impact of Technology on Art and I found it extremely attractive . At the same time I had found an article on Crypto Art-work sold for $1 and I found interesting this coincidence/connection between these 2 things that I was reading at the same time. Another reason that fascinates me is that Crypto Artwork is a NEW THING, a new market and there is not much information about it. My problem is that I get bored with ideas very quickly. I don’t know anything about cryptocurrency and as I will have to carry this idea until next year I am hoping there will be more information coming up this will al least keep my focus and excited on the topic.
Here are the slides from the presentation
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am hoping that Crypto Art will develop next year so I can have more information to research, although I have noticed that because of what is happening in the world right now the value of bitcoin is gone down and I fear crypto art will feel the consequences... In any case, I will find a connection to this topic through either conceptual art ( as Neil advised) or through technology in art..

Dan GrahamNeo-Baroque Walkway, 20192

“Experiencing “Neo-Baroque Walkway," the spectators walk through a narrow passage between two convoluted sine wave-like opposing two-way mirror-coated glass walls. The two sides of convoluted forms slightly vary. The experience for the viewer involves a somewhat psychedelic, optical distortion of the spectator’s body which might be superimposed on images of other spectators’ bodies.” Dan Graham, 2019
I just found this stunning installation looking at Art Galleries.
This was an exhibition at Marian Goodman Gallery Paris in November 2019 in which the physical and visual experience of the audience is an inherent part of the works.
vimeo
(Video from Vimeo showing how the installation work)
I would love to see how this piece would be if there were projections or videos or screens. Because of the shape of the mirrors, the images would probably be psychedelic and distorted, it will be great to create something like this. For the moment I just have to practice the play with mirrors and projections to see the result.

Larry Bell - STILL STANDING
I came across this stunning work from Larry Bell while looking at SPACE SHIFTER book of contemporary installation in the library.
The Artist Larry Bell had done exactly the type of installation that I had in mind but with the unique material that reflects, transmit and absorbs light. It is a series of cubes constructed from glass panels, tinted with a filmy metallic coating. He makes a series of immersive installation that he refers to “ standing walls”.

Also, I cannot believe that an exhibition “Still Standing,” it’s on now at the Hauser & Wirth’ in New York :(https://www.hauserwirth.com/stories/27401-larry-bell-still-standing)

Exhibition Visit Photographer’s Gallery 21/02/20
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CREDITS : Clare Strand - The Discrete Channel with Noise : Information Source #3
Tumblr media
CREDITS : Clare Strand - The Discrete Channel with Noise : Information Source #1
Clare Strand’s project was my favourite because it examines how we perceive, code, and categorise visual information in the digital age. This is reflecting the topic this year’s modules as well as while raising questions about interpretation, perception and the ownership of knowledge.
 1. This is the body of work that I have found to be the most interesting in the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize 2020. It drew my attention because of the images are in black and white and you can see that the style is from a different time period, yet they are showed in the Photographer’s gallery in 2020. Also, the red numbers drawn on the photographs made it look interesting. When I read that the project was about experiment into visual communication and misinformation it became even more interesting to me.
Tumblr media
2.The images are framed and placed in a sequence ( image above) although I don’t think there in an actual start or end. They show and archive or photos where she drew a grid featuring a sequence of number in red. The images are not very large, so the viewer has to get close to actually understand what is going on. Next to it there was the rest of her work, which was featuring paintings of by painting from a series of instructions arrived at from a gridded original image, which were very big ( image below)
Tumblr media
Considering that this was in a big room where only Clare Strand’s work was featured the small grid presentation was the less noticeable but most successful and engaging.
3. Even though it was on a different level, it was very interesting to see Jan Svoboda’s work exhibited in the same gallery with other contemporary artists. Although he began experimenting with photography in the late 1950s his work shows similar techniques used by contemporary photographers today. Just like Clare Strand works across different artistic disciplines, from photography and web-based programmes, to painting, kinetic machines and sculpture ( as we seen in her work before - she takes old photographs and drew numbers on them) Her practice is often concerned with communication, both as medium and material for her inquiry, and the circulation of information. ( https://thephotographersgallery.org.uk/whats-on/talks-and-events/artist-talk-clare-strand)
Svoboda’s work, in the same way redefine the language and perception of photography, deconstructing the process and form, playing with subject matter and presentation and considering the medium in relation to painting and sculpture ( images below)  ( https://thephotographersgallery.org.uk/whats-on/exhibition/jan-svoboda-against-light)
