This is definitely one of the most powerful scenes in the movie, and a real turning point for Sarah. She’s confronted with the person she was when she wished Toby away and the things she was so attached to, but she’s changed since then. Those items don’t matter like they did.

Sarah was clinging to those items so much in the past because she felt so alienated from her family. She had no one to turn to so she attached herself to her belongings, but now that Toby is in peril (or she thinks he is. Toby seems to be having a grand old time lol!) now, she’s realizing that she can’t value those items above her own brother. It’s junk compared to him. He’s the one she needs to be looking after.

Labyrinth is by no means saying that fantasy is problematic or bad, but it does have a message about valuing material items over people. The junk people are really symbolic of what valuing things over people can do to someone. It’s honestly pretty terrifying when you think about it that way.

Your theory about them being former runners is interesting. They were the ones that didn’t make it, that didn’t have that realization that their priorities were screwed up and now they’re stuck forever with all those things and nothing that really matters. It’s pretty deep.

I personally have a headcanon that the junk fields are from Jareth throwing out things he impulse bought while visiting earth through the centuries, but thats just cause it makes me laugh XD

Labyrinth Theory

Rewatched Labyrinth again and as always I find something new with each watch through.

After Sarah wakes up from her hallucination she falls into the junkyard and meets Junk Lady. Junk Lady manages to take Sarah into an identical replica of her room, where Sarah thinks she dreamed it all. Until, she opens the door and the Junk Lady comes in and begins showing Sarah all of her possessions and trying to get her to stay in there with them.

But here's the detail that I never thought about before.

She piles them on the back of Sarah's chair. She piles them on Sarah's back. She's trying to turn Sarah into one of them.

I'm a big "it was all real" truther with this movie. And with that in mind I think all of the Junk People in this movie are former runners. People like Sarah who were trying to save someone, and failed.

When Sarah opens the door to leave the Junk Lady says-

JUNK LADY: "Better to stay in here, dear! Yes! There's nothing you want out there! No, oh, no." (01:12:15)

I think the Junk People failed to save someone from the Labyrinth, and were thus trapped. Maybe they ignored who they were saving to instead find comfort in their items, like Junk Lady tries to do with Sarah. Or they failed and then found comfort in their items. If you look on Junk Lady's back she has a chess board, a drum and some stuffed animals along with everything else. It looks like she tried to take her whole room with her, including the chair she sat in. Similar to how Sarah sits down in her chair.

And isn't that a fitting punishment? You failed to save what truly mattered, so why not carry with you for all eternity what you really cared about. I mean, Junk Lady says it herself:

JUNK LADY: "It's all here. Everything in the world you've ever cared about, is all right here." (01:13:20)

Not to mention her reaction to hearing Sarah reciting from the Labyrinth book. She's heard those words before, but in this version of the film she's no longer being puppeted by Jareth. So how does she know? Unless she had that book once too.

I always thought it was just lipgloss (peach flavored of course) but you raise an interesting question. Jareth wants to use the magic of dance to sway Sarah to forget her quest and see him as her hero again (or fall in love with love with him, if that’s your take) but the spell doesn’t work on her and he’s the one who ends up falling during the ballroom sequence. If he bit the peach too, then what was he trying to forget?

we all love the masquerade but

one thing about this scene always perplexed me.

Even as a kid, I could not understand why his lips distracted me so much.

Why were they so shiny?

It doesn’t show up anywhere else in the film. Not the first time he plays with his balls:

or even when he asks her to PLEASE take his balls:

it took me thirty gosh-danged years to figure out his lips were shiny because HE BIT THE PEACH TOO

It’s not a mistake. This is a test shot for the costuming:

shiny shiny lips This leaves so many questions. Hoggle is the one who gives Sarah the peach per Jareth’s threats directives, so how would he have bitten it too? We don’t see him from the time he hands over the peach until they’re in the ballroom, so there’s no real way of telling, but I’m assuming that he could or would have conjured one on his own and bitten it too. I’m sure crystal tastes like shit and cuts up your gums something awful. Could the lipgloss just be…lipgloss? Sure. But it was so…peachy. PEACHY.

The blood had reached his mouth. Tasting it, he came to the resolve to walk out of his capsule. He touched the moon one last time and jumped out into eternity of space and floated into the embrace of infinity. He grabbed at the clasp of his helmet, taking off his lifeline. The blood that had accumulated seeped out in controlled droplets like glowing red mercury. He took a long breath in, tasting space and let out his last sigh…

Tubes, tubes, filled his mouth. Straps held him fast to a bed he stared to scream, gagging on the tubes that invaded his system. The pain in his arm waxed and waned, like the moon. He looked down at them. The appearance of holes left there long ago showed in his mind. A faceless man in white tightened his restraints and injected something into his shoulder making him drowsy and distant. Before he fell under he saw a face, beautiful, dark, the lips spoke of love and a name the name was Tom….

I love this interpretation of space oddity! I remember being so curious to find out what happened to major Tom when I was younger. Loveee the imagery and symbolism!

Do you have any relatively clear images or jareth's costume in the staircase scene? There's some kind of design in the front and all the images I've seen of the costume have all of 2 pixels.

Here ya go! These are the best I could find! Seems to be very dublet-esque. I also find looking up cosplays helps get a feel of what the hell is going on with the costume because if they could figure it out, you can too ndjckdjcbdb

Im honestly still screaming and crying over the fact that so many costumes in Labyrinth are so intricately designed but are seen for 0.2 seconds but add world building elements and really give you a feel for the world like ITS NOT MADE LIKE THAT ANYMORE

I still don’t know why he changes outfits for this 1 scene only, but the fits go hard so who am I to judge.
