this agony of mind, this creeping pain that gnaws
Anything, anything would be better than this agony of mind, this creeping pain that gnaws and fumbles and caresses one and never hurts quite enough.

autumn is really like. i brought you some sunlight from when you were 10. didn't the world feel so bright to you then? i'll drench your hands in syrupy nostalgia, so everything you make is stained bittersweet. i'll ruffle your hair with an ice-kissed breeze--it'll be the kindest touch you've had in years. you finally feel like a part of something grander. i'm the last warm hand you hold before winter surrender.

I desperately wish I had people to talk to about what's been going on lately with me and my practice.
Something I avoided in my over 7 years of witchcraft is spirit work. Well, i dabbled in spirit companionship but that never really clicked with me. I grew up collecting bones and furs I found in the woods, and I spent time thinking about the dead and the afterlife to an almost unhealthy extent. I was one of those people kinda teetering on the edge between life and death.
So when I began my journey in witchcraft, I did so with a mindset of lifting myself up out of the dark hole that I'd been buried in surrounded with death as a child. I avoided spirit work and shadow work like the plague. With religion as well, I avoided working with gods associated with death, out of fear i think. I am devoted to Baldr who is of course the biggest ray of sunshine and that's the aspect of Him i heeded. I have been neglecting the fact that He is dead, He is waiting in Hel. Life and death are inseparable.
Lately, and I mean very recently, my active avoidance of death and spirits has been shaken up by the presence of a spirit. In my practice up until now, idk if i was scared of this sort of thing or..? No no scratch that. I was and still AM scared.
It's not the spirit that scares me, it's the implications and the fear that if I open myself up to him then I will be opening myself up to all manner of spirits with no way to filter them out.
I wish I could talk to people about last night. My friends and family can accept my standard witchcraft and they're fairly receptive to more mainstream things like manifestation. But I'm 99% sure they'd all think I'm crazy if i told them I'd spent four hours in almost a trancelike state not knowing I was actively channeling the spirit I've been communicating with recently. Not only was i channeling without REALIZING, i also had zero protections set up to help prevent energy sapping. My energy is too fucking sensitive for this without protections and cleansing beforehand.
I felt like a zombie, it was the strangest feeling. And I was disassociated for a while afterwards. I'm sure sleep deprivation didn't help much either :/ but I felt so connected. So so connected to this spirit, that I was having trouble distinguishing between his past and my present. I don't know how to phrase this and idk what to do because i can't talk to friends about death witchcraft or spirit work. Idek how I stumbled into all of this. Is it a phase or?? Maybe just extra sensitive to energies now that the veil is thinning.
Idk how to handle this. I need help handling this ha

Tips for Discernment
Tumblr media
Discernment is a crucial skill for any magic worker. It’s how we separate the magic from the mundane, reality from our imagination, and reduce the risk of being deluded or manipulated. Everbody already naturally does this a little bit, but actively strengthening the skill can be difficult for a beginner. Here are some tips, tricks, and techniques that have helped me.
Write everything down. When doing a spell or working with a spirit, keep a written record of what you feel, say, witness, etc. This will help give you something objective to look back on later, which is a huge help for doing any post-research. You never know what details may give you a lead.
Pick a rule for “signs” and stick with it. What do you believe about coincidences? When do you believe something is a message from the Universe or your gods? Create a litmus test/threshhold for what you consider a sign; it doesn’t really matter what it is, so long as it’s consistently applied. That way, you’re saving your energy for the more important stuff instead of worrying/wondering about the small fry. On that note…
The “Rule of Three” (NOT to be confused with the Wiccan Rede.) This is a common discernment method for the concept above. One time seeing something is an instance, two is a coincidence, and three is a message.
When you ask for signs, be specific. Ask for something unique/specific enough that you wouldn’t reasonably expect it to happen anyway, but not so rare that it has no chance of manifesting. Color + Object (ex: let me see a purple feather) is a good method. That way you know exactly what your sign will be.
The Gut Test. Sometimes when I’m communicating a spirit and I feel like something’s off, I’ll take a moment in my head and think, “this isn’t real. I’m making this conversation up.” Listen to how your gut responds. Does it agree right away? Does saying that feel incorrect, like it’s truly legitimate? Was the conversation legitimate up to a certain point? Listen to your gut and act accordingly.
The Mimic Test. When working with spirits and “hearing” a voice in your head, try to recreate it with your own inner mind voice. Can you get it to be the same voice? Same volume? If you can, then you’re probably safe writing it off as your imagination.
PRACTICE. Practice. Practice. Practice feeling the energy of your plants. Practice feeling your own energy. Describe it in detail. Practice feeling the energy of any ritual objects. Practice communicating with a spirit you trust, like a guide or Ancestors. Just like a muscle, discernment becomes stronger with repeated use and withers when ignored. Practice on little things to keep you sharp for the big stuff.
Don’t Beat Yourself Up. It’s understandably a little embarrassing to admit we were wrong about something. And that’s okay! Pobody’s Nerfect! Recognizing our discernment mistakes makes us stronger practitioners, because it means you’re critically thinking about what you’re doing and striving to improve. At worst, a practitioner who never admits a lapse in discernment is actually missing that chance for growth, and runs a very high risk of being taken down a flight of fancy and getting increasingly disconnected from the real world. So be kind to yourself! Growing is good.

Yew Meditations
Bits of gnosis picked up from sitting under an old Yew in my local forest.
There isn’t a plant or tree without a solar quality (even the most shade-loving), nor any without watery qualities (even the fiery desert kinds), and very few without earthy/underworld connections.
As every person is made different by the nature of their upbringing, so is every member of the greenfolk individualised by the source of their water and soil, the memories and happenings upon and within their land.
Therefore, in a pinch, when you need help or protection; better you ask the gentle lavender bush who has stood by your house for decades, than a store-bought stalk of sage.
Yet remember still that you would consult a specialist among the greenfolk just as you would among humankind. Anyone can stick a bandage on you or tend your fever, but not everyone has the skills of a trained healer. Likewise with plants and trees.
Genetic memory runs stronger in plants and insects, less so in animals, even lesser in humans. The greenfolk are more connected to their ancestors than we are to ours. Wisdom refined over generations.
Every tree in an ancient woodland is connected. Befriend one and ask them for what you need; they will lead you to the right friends.
Be patient with trees. Their longevity and slower pace of life means it can take seasons to establish a significant relationship, but once built they can last generations.
Herbs and smaller plants may be more responsive but shorter-lived; take care of their offspring and the land they grow on; future generations will remember the kindness shown to their ancestors.
That said, the greenfolk tend towards generosity. This is not necessarily out of ‘kindness’, but an understanding of how to exist sustainably, as well as from being responsible for sustaining the majority of living beings on this planet.

Hello there, hope you're having a great day.
I was wondering if you have any tips or links for research into historical worship of Baldr. The well is coming up dry at the moment.
Sure, there isn't very much and you might already be aware of what I know, but I'll share what I can.
Baldr is seemingly mentioned in the second Merseburg Charm with the byname Phol. What this second name, spelled exactly that way, is meant to represent underlyingly, is a matter of some debate but at least going by Wikipedia there are some names of plants that seem to possibly be derived from it, as those names alternate with names derived from Baldr.
Stefan Brink discusses the flimsy, but not nonexistent, evidence for places named for Baldr in "How Uniform was Old Norse Religion?"
There is a literary description of a place where Baldr was worshiped in Friðþjófs saga, a 13th/14th century legendary saga. It should not be considered a viable source of historical information. In this saga, Baldrshagi 'Baldr's meadow' is a cult place and griðstaðr, meaning that violence is strictly prohibited. It's treated somewhat like a cloister; they send a woman there so that she can't be married, basically. It's a literary device from then-contemporary times back-projected onto an imaginary pagan past, but then, that's its own kind of interesting.
I recommend the paper "Some Controversial Aspects of the Myth of Baldr" by Anatoly Liberman. It's too dense to summarize effectively, and doesn't come to any really hard conclusions but also explains why it would be a mistake to do so. Liberman's papers are always good even if you don't agree with his conclusions because of his detailed descriptions of the history of research on the subject, and you can use this paper to find other things to read.
There's a fringe theory accepted by nobody by Theo Vennemann that Baldr is the result of a loan of the deity Ba'al into Germanic from Punic-speaking peoples in the distant past. It's definitely wrong, but fun.
