Imma try to explain gender fluidity

Ok, first off, I am not trying to pick a fight. I am honestly just trying to put how a person who identifies as genderfluid feels into words. Believe or don’t believe it, I don’t care. I’m not here to argue it’s existence.

Now then, let me set up a metaphor to make this a little easier. Imagine a light bulb. When it is lit, one is not comfortable with their birth gender. When it is off, one is comfortable as their birth gender. However, this bulb can also be dimmed, representing a stage where one is somewhat comfortable with their birth gender but also a bit uncomfortable with their birth gender.

For a transgender person, the light bulb is always on until they take active step to correct their appearance to fit with their gender.

For a cisgender person, the light bulb is never on. While they may still feel insecure about their body, they have no desire to change to how they look to fit a different set of pronouns. 

For a genderfluid person, the light bulb will flicker. On occasion, they will be comfortable with their birth gender and the light bulb will be off. Other times, they will not be comfortable with their birth gender and the light bulb will be on until they adjust their appearance to better match their desired gender. Other times still, the light bulb will be dim. This is the most confusing part of gender fluidity because a dim light bulb could signify identifying with both genders or neither of them. 

We do not have control over these light bulbs. There are not switches, remotes or buttons we can push to turn them on and off. There is no dial we can turn to brighten or dim the bulb. They are simply wired that way. All we as gender fluid people do is try to get that light off so we can feel more comfortable with who we are and how we look. If that means we put a bit more emphasis on gender roles for ourselves, then so be it but the vast majority of us won’t force them on to you.

I’m sorry someone got mad at you and threw a hissy fit but please understand that not everyone is like that. Most of us just want to feel comfortable in our own skin and, upon being misgendered, will probably be either too ashamed to correct you or politely correct you. We aren’t mentally ill. We are just as uncomfortable with ourselves as any trans person. It just comes and goes without us being able to control it.
