P5A: The Chess Thing
Oh my god I am so slow on the uptake apparently but I just realised that the anime version of the engine room scene means that Akechi was carrying that damn chess piece around with him everywhere he went after the interrogation room.
Context, if you haven’t watched the anime: it was released several years pre-Royal but the writers clearly had the same realisation that they could have done more with the relationship between Akechi and Joker. Their chosen way of addressing this, rather than billiards and naked bathing, was to have Akechi and Ren play a lot of chess, with Akechi always playing white and Ren always playing black.
After their last game before stealing Sae’s heart (i.e. the last one before the betrayal and interrogation room), Akechi wins, and as he’s leaving Leblanc, Ren throws him the black king and tells him to hang onto it as a promise of a rematch.
… and then, weeks later, in the engine room, Akechi shoots the bulkhead switch and at the last second throws the black king back to Ren before making him promise to change Shido’s heart.
Ren then clearly carries it with him everywhere he goes, because in the final battle against Yaldabaoth, after a similar sequence to the game with all Ren’s confidants cheering him on, the last voice he hears is Akechi’s and we see what he’s holding in his hand…
“What’s wrong? Get up! It’s far too early for checkmate.”
(Side note: did… did it get bigger? WHAT IS DRAWING ON-MODEL ANYWAY)
So yeah, it’s the equivalent of The Glove, but up until now I had somehow not properly thought through the implications of Akechi having the king with him in the engine room.
It’s the equivalent of The Glove but they both took turns carrying it around sadly after the other one died oh my god can we please have a canon version of this storyline that ends with them both definitively alive already

Akira Kurusu (@JustJoker): How important do you have to be to be “assassinated” instead of “murdered”?
Makoto Niijima (@MakotoNiijima): That is... a good question.
Goro Akechi (@DetectivePrince): It depends on the context. If the motivation is political, then it’s assassination. If not, then it’s murder. Unless it’s an accident, then it’s manslaughter.
Goro Akechi (@DetectivePrince): For example: What I did to you could be considered assassination on Shido’s behalf, since it was to push forward a political agenda, but it could also be considered murder on my behalf, since I just really hate you. It was anything but an accident, though, so it was definitely not manslaughter.
Akira Kurusu (@JustJoker): ...Thanks, Akechi.
