Fifty creators of the iconic Batman superhero character signed a petition urging the governments of Egypt and Qatar to press for the release of Yarden and Shiri Bibas along with their two red-haired sons, Ariel and Kfir. All four family members have been held hostage in Gaza since October 7.
The family was kidnapped from Nir Oz by Hamas terrorists on October 7, a day that saw 3,000 terrorists infiltrate southern Israel to massacre 1,200 Israelis — most of them civilians — and kidnap 253 people into the Strip. Mother Shiri and her sons were captured separately from her husband Yarden.
One of the iconic images of the family that has been circulated since their capture shows the four wearing Batman apparel. Ariel, 4, is a dedicated fan of the Gotham City protector.
The petition was sent to Egyptian and Qatari ambassadors in Washington, DC, on April 12. The effort was organized by Dr. Rafael Medoff, historian and director of the David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies.
“These comics creators have spent decades developing a hero who fights for the innocent and stands as a beacon of hope for his community, and we’re trying to channel that spirit through this effort,” Medoff told The Times of Israel.
Batman was introduced as a character in the 27th edition of Detective Comics (DC), printed in 1939. DC has produced numerous Batman franchises since then, and the character is familiar around the world from Hollywood films, video games, merchandising and television.
Some of the Bibas petition’s high-profile signees include Mike Carlin, DC’s head of animation; longtime DC publisher Paul Levitz; and former president of Warner Animation Sander Schwartz.
The petition was also signed by some of Batman’s veteran writers, including Chip Zdansky and Mark Waid. Leading artists from the franchise who signed include Mark Bagley, Dan Jurgens, Denys Cowan and Amanda Conner, the celebrated artist behind the Joker’s girlfriend, Harley Quinn.
“As members of the community of Batman writers and artists, we are contacting you concerning the young Batman fan who was taken hostage by terrorists and held in Gaza since last October 7,” said the creators.
“Moved by the many anecdotes of Ariel’s affection for the iconic character who has become a symbol of hope and justice for so many, we implore your governments to exercise all possible leverage on Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad to immediately release the Bibas family, and all the Israeli hostages, from captivity,” said the petition.
Some of the most harrowing footage filmed by Hamas terrorists on October 7 was of Shiri Bibas and her sons being dragged off by Hamas men. Since then, the IDF released surveillance footage showing Bibas and the children being transferred by terrorists in Khan Yunis later that day.
“Ariel Bibas, age 4, and his brother Kfir, now age 1, were taken hostage by Hamas, along with their parents, Yarden and Shiri Bibas. Ariel’s maternal grandparents were murdered in the same attack,” wrote petition co-authors Medoff and former Batman artist Dean Motter.
Medoff and Motter recently created a nonfiction graphic novel called “Whistleblowers: Four Who Fought to Expose the Holocaust to America.” Published in February, the book is the duo’s attempt to appeal to graphic novel-consuming youth with the real-life accounts of upstanders.
No stranger to Batman lore, Medoff penned an essay for a book called “Theology and Batman.” One of the book’s central themes is the theodicy — or sense of redemption — Batman brings to the world by vindicating goodness over evil.
Many of the creators of Batman, Superman and other superheroes were of Jewish descent. Quite a few books and essays have been written about how these creators were influenced by Jewish history while at their drawing boards.
Earlier in 2024, an issue of DC’s “The Penguin” remembered that Bruce Wayne — Batman’s alter-ego — is Jewish. The moment came when Bruce Wayne referenced his handkerchief as being a Hanukkah gift from his father to his mother.
In a “Batwoman” reboot released in 2006, the character Kate Kane — Batwoman’s alter-ego — was reintroduced as a Jewish, lesbian cousin of Batman, demonstrating how comic artists both shape and reflect their times.
Medoff’s professional wheelhouse is Holocaust studies, particularly the United States’ response while the genocide took place. However, the plight of the Bibas family and other hostages in Gaza is transcendent, he said.
“The moral obligation to speak out against injustice never changes, whether during the Holocaust or in our own time,” Medoff said.
By all accounts, Ariel Bibas is a big Batman fan. Almost six months after a photo of the family wearing Batman pajamas was shared around the world, hundreds of New Yorkers in Batman gear rallied for the family’s release in New York City at the end of March.
“This is a very sad Purim for the Jewish people around the world,” Central Park rally organizer Omer Lubaton Granot said.
“Ariel won’t dress up in his Batman costume as he dreamed. Instead, Jews around the world will do so to remind the world that there is a 4-year-old boy who is stuck in a dark pit,” said Granot.

every single day I think about how american black vultures are known for engaging in allopreening (preening between different species)
and they have a specific relationship with crested caracaras, in which the black vultures assist them by not only preening them after meals but also leading them to food in the first place— due to their superior sense of smell— while the caracaras assist the black vultures by acting as a warning signal in case of danger
and while this is more typical of black vultures, this is not common at all for any member of the falconidae family— it’s a special bond!

yet another post in favor of vultures everyone , hope you enjoy:) and I implore you to do some more research on these incredible birds !!

"In a recent Harvard-Harris poll, 53 percent of Americans between 18-24 said that October 7 was justified by Israel's wrongs torward the Palestinians.
Those most likely to say so were also the most likely to know nothing about the history of Israeli-Palestinian conflict: e.g. that Gaza has not been occupied since 2005; that it is Hamas, not Israel, that limits the import of food and medical supplies; that far from committing genocide against Palestinians, the Palestinian population grew rapidly under Israeli rule, with life expectancy skyrocketing and infant mortality plummeting; that the Palestinians have been repeatedly offered a state since the original UN Partition in 1948; that far from being colonizers, Jews are indigenous to Israel, and purchased, not conquered, all the land on which Israel was originally founded; that at the time of the Second Aliyah of Jews, the land was desolate and largely unpopulated, and only when the Jews had drained the swamps and caused the deserts to bloom was a large Arab population attracted to live there; and that most of Israel's Jewish population today is descended from Jews of color ethnically cleansed from Arab lands."

Voices of Palestinians | FP in Israel
Bari Weiss interviewed ordinary Palestinians in Ramallah about how they feel about October 7th.
Ending up writing a lot, so under the cut:
Whenever I think about Ramallah I think about 1) the authors of "Decolonize Palestine" are from there, and 2) The 2000 Ramallah Lynching. And when I think about the Ramallah Lynching, I think how less than 5 months ago two Palestinan men were publicly hanged and lynched, amidst cheers of a bloodthirsty mob for being suspected of working with Israel. No trial. Of course.
The words that online leftists parrot are the same words these people parrot, and I don't think you understand that these aren't just words. These beliefs and ideas kill. It kills Jews and Palestinians. It will kill and has killed people I love.
Another thing to mention, they seem to blame everything on Israel. Their own leaders are never mentioned once. No mention of how the IRI has a vested interest in prolonging their suffering. No mention of working for better public welfare or any neighborly coexistence. And somehow, going through a checkpoint into another country is somehow "oppression".
Their information is a-historical and one-sided too. I'd also like to note that anyone who isn't 100 percent with the belief that 'murdering, raping and kidnapping are justified' has to literally hide their face.
Israel has committed sins against the Palestinians but none of these sins are glorified and celebrated as they are in Palestinian culture, when they do similar and worse to us. Why do they give out sweets in the streets when they kill us? Why are Israelis supposed to make peace with people who do that proudly?
I feel terrible for the people who were born into this. I feel terrible that their own leaders for generations have prioritized their suffering for PR and IRI funds. Yet it is not something my people should have to pay for with their lives.
When will Palestinians finally take some responsibility for the situation they are in?
Of course, not every Palestinian thinks the same. Of course, there are those who do want coexistence. But they are not the majority, and they cannot even be the loud minority as doing so gets them lynched.
I know this entire post might seem harsh, however denying the mentality in front of us stops actual peace from happening and is only prolonging the conflict. You have to admit there is a problem, in order to fix it.
You want to save Palestinian lives, I understand. The Palestinian Leaders do not want that, which is why Israel has to eradicate Hamas, and until the Palestinians promote leaders that value their lives - we will remain internally in this conflict.
Hamas was elected in Gaza over the more moderate parties because they had a firm Anti-Israel stance. We will not have peace until their prioritizes change. Their freedom of movement and choices and self-determination, do not override the lives of Jews and Israelis. Life is more important.
The survival and security of me and my people is more important than freedom of choice. My own security and safety are more important than my freedom of choice and movement. I've never been into the West Bank or on the Temple Mount. I can't travel to most if any countries in my immediate vicinity as it is death sentence.
But I barely even mention it, because my life is simply more important to me.
I am aware that this value, of preservation of life and security and safety before all else, is not a universal value. But this is the value that Israel acts with in this war. This is value that I believe is worthy to defend.
In thinking of this conflict, I beg of you to ask yourself: What are my values? What do I believe is important? What is my core belief? And am I proud of that belief? Will I defend it to anyone who tries to deny it?
I know we like to say "people have different opinions and perspectives" and while this is true, this only works if there is an underlying value of "live and let live".
Unfortunately, "live and let live" is not a universal value. So, really ask yourself what do you believe in? And are you willing to defend it against those that would deny it?

Today's update post will be dedicated to the lawsuit that South Africa (SA) submitted to the International Court of Justice (ICJ, the UN's judicial arm), with the discussion held this coming Thursday. I first wrote about it here.
Why is SA suing Israel specifically for the crime of genocide, and not for the easier to prove ('coz it doesn't involve intent) charge of committing war crimes? Well, because Israel has signed the international convention for the prevention of genocide. It actually signed it pretty early on, in 1949. Just 4 years after the end of the Holocaust (it applies to Israel since 1951). What signing this convention means, is that even if Israel isn't committing a genocide, and SA knows it isn't, SA also knows the only way to drag Israel to the ICJ is to accuse it of this crime, so... surprise! SA did.
Curiously, it turns out that the Palestinian Authority (PA) has secretly been helping SA with filing this lawsuit (as reported on Jan 6, on Kan News, source in Hebrew). The PA has a right to sue Israel at the ICJ, but it might be using SA as a proxy, because it is afraid of being sued itself (it can, as an idea, be sued for financially supporting the genocidally motivated actions of Hamas, due to its "pay for slay" program, where the PA pays Palestinians salaries for their terrorist activities, and the pay is greater the more lethal the attack. Because yes, the PA will be paying salaries for the Oct 7 massacre, despite it being carried out by Hamas, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and other terrorists), and I guess they think the best defense is an offense. Also, by having SA file the lawsuit for them, the PA is making sure another country will be drawing all of the fire for it, such as the condemnation from the US, calling the lawsuit "counterproductive" and "not based on facts," which was issued against SA, not against the PA.
Tumblr media
Also, weirdly it seems that the issue of intent, which should make the lawsuit more difficult to prove, is actually what most of the case is based on!? The lawsuit is less about what Israel has been doing, and more about quotes from Israeli officials, that supposedly expose genocidal intent. Many of these quotes are presented in a misleading way, stuff like omitting that the quotes were clearly in reference to obliterating Hamas, presented them instead as if these Israeli officials were talking about obliterating the Palestinians.
Tumblr media
So basically, SA is guilty of precisely the first point I was making in this post, conflating Hamas with the Palestinians, but only when it can be used to attack the Jewish state.
I watched an interesting panel held about this subject, and one legal expert said the right thing to do, would be for the ICJ to point out that SA is abusing the court for cynical political purposes, that its lawsuit doesn't meet the minimal requirements to be filed, making it very obvious that they're just weaponizing the court and abusing its power to hound Israel, and for this, the lawsuit should be thrown out immediately, without even getting to trial. Another participant, a former Israeli diplomat to the UN, said that yes, that's what should be done. But this lawsuit will allow the judges to rule on the most burning subject on the global agenda these days, so they won't throw the case out and condemn SA for filing this frivolous lawsuit.
Another panelist suggested that Israel should go on the offense, and point out at the ICJ, that by virtue of SA being financially supported and invested in by Iran, and thus unsurprisingly supporting the Islamist Iranian regime, which is the one that financed Hamas' activity (including the massacre of Oct 7, and the recently exposed attempts to target Jewish institutes in Europe), it's actually SA that is supporting the genocide of the Jews. I doubt this is the line of defense Israel will take, but it's an interesting point to keep in mind.
In conclusion, regarding what this false lawsuit really means:
Tumblr media
SA's lawsuit basically seeks to rob the Jewish state of the right to defend its population against a genocidal threat. That is INSANE. It is, in practice, pro-genocide, and insane that it's even entertained.

Hot take: any professional journalist/news organization that discusses Palestinian suffering and death and doesn’t mention
-the fact that Hamas still has enough fuel to run their tunnels and fire their rockets
-the fact that many of these rockets misfire and kill civilians in Gaza
-the fact that many countries and organizations, including Egypt and the UN, refused to help civilians flee the war zone under the guise of opposing forced displacement
-the fact that Hamas refuses to allow civilians to take shelter in the many miles of tunnels they still have
-the verifiable fact that Hamas steals humanitarian aid
-the verifiable fact that Hamas stores weapons in and operates out of what should be safe zones, legally rendering them military targets
Is siding with Hamas in their propaganda war.
If you are discussing a humanitarian suffering, knowing that an organization is deliberately causing or prolonging that suffering for their own purposes, and several others are enabling them, and much of your audience doesn’t know this, and you don’t mention it?!?!?
You are complicit in cynically using that suffering for propaganda.
You clearly don’t care about helping the people who are suffering, because you can’t solve a crisis while ignoring major factors of its existence.

Btw I'm like. Staring so hard at the greenery around that tomb you found. I didn't realize Israel had so much cool plant life :0
Israel has like a bajilion (3) biomes that also contain sort of "sub biomes"! We got mountains and (some) snow in the north (Golan and Galielee regions), hill country and steppe land in the center-east, Mediterranean shores stretching from north to south and 2 types of desert (semi arid - arid)! What I like about finding archaeology is that itll always be covered in some type of overgrown shrub, adds to the mystery!
From my own personal collection:

Cave-y mountains in the Upper Galilee
