the notes on any post about kids and the internet are always so rancid first of all even if monitoring and surveilling them 'worked' it would be damaging and not just to those with outright abusive parents. second of all i can tell that some of you were not subjected to rigid internet surveillance growing up because if you were you would know all it does is encourage more sophisticated forms of sneakiness and discourage open conversation, including of things online that may be genuinely disturbing to the kid. "oh but there's fucked up shit online" yes and you are in fantasyland if you think increased parental control protects from that

A community-led strategy to save Brazil’s dry forests from desertification
Tumblr media
In northern Bahia state, 35 communities have come together to conserve and recover close to 100,000 acres of Caatinga dry forest in northeastern Brazil.
With the Recaatingamento project, families learn to preserve native vegetation, control the overpopulation of goat, and invest in sustainable sources of income, such as gathering wild fruits.
Affected by recurrent droughts, the Caatinga is one of the region’s most susceptible to climate change; it’s also Brazil’s third-most deforested biome, which contributes to accelerating desertification — 13% of the soil there is already sterile.

If a worker who isn't the owner says ANYTHING similar to "I'm not really supposed to do this but-" and then does something that helps you, under no circumstances inform the business, including through reviews. You tell them that the worker was polite, professional, the very model of customer service and why you like to go there. You do not breathe a word of the rulebreaking.

I’m sorry friends, but “just google it” is no longer viable advice. What are we even telling people to do anymore, go try to google useful info and the first three pages are just ads for products that might be the exact opposite of what the person is trying to find but The Algorithm thinks the words are related enough? And if it’s not ads it’s just sponsored websites filled with listicles, just pages and pages of “TOP FIFTEEN [thing you googled] IMAGINED AS DISNEY PRINCESSES” like… what are we even doing anymore, google? I can no longer use you as shorthand for people doing real and actual helpful research on their own.

Pit bulls went from America’s best friend to public enemy [The Conversation, Oct 2022]
As recently as 50 years ago, the pit bull was America’s favorite dog. Pit bulls were everywhere. They were popular in advertising and used to promote the joys of pet-and-human friendship. Nipper on the RCA Victor label, Pete the Pup in the “Our Gang” comedy short films, and the flag-wrapped dog on a classic World War I poster all were pit bulls.
...For decades pit bulls’ tenacity encouraged the sport of dogfighting, with the dogs “pitted” against each other. Fights often went to the death, and winning animals earned huge sums for those who bet on them. But betting on dogs is not a high-class sport. Dogs are not horses; they cost little to acquire and maintain. Pit bulls easily and quickly became associated with the poor, and especially with Black men, in a narrative that connected pit bulls with gang violence and crime.
Pitbull History: America's Favorite Dog [Kennel to Couch, July 2019]
During the surge of immigration to America, many families kept their Pit Bulls, for they were highly intelligent and friendly family pets. Historical photos exist of the Pit Bull protecting the young family children, acting as a nanny dog. Some Pits even allegedly had jobs on the family farm. Though bred to fight and attack, the Pit Bull became notorious for being sweet family companions. During WWI and WWII, Pit Bulls were even featured as a national mascot, representing protection and fearlessness.
Racism and the American Pit Bull [Current Affairs, Sep 2016]
In the 20th century, the 1970s witnessed the swift and precipitous decline of modern cities. As America’s urban areas struggled, poorer residents, often Latino and Black, came to depend on pit bulls, which were an affordable means of receiving protection and companionship.
The media vilification of pit bulls soon followed.
The racist story behind the pit bull’s fall from American icon to demon dog [Splinter, May 2016]
As urban crime skyrocketed, pit bulls became increasingly employed as guard dogs in economically depressed black and brown neighborhoods. Dickey says that’s when newspapers started printing bogus stories about these dogs, fabricating alarming reports of vicious behavior. One 1974 New York Times article claimed that pit bull puppies were trained to fight by killing kittens and other puppies.
BONUS: Can Pitbulls Lock Their Jaws?
Tumblr media
No.
pitbull breeders really spent hundreds of years perfecting a breed of dog that everyone hates but it just looks at you like a pathetic awkward guy
