He yells at you
while he hits the wall
You flinch
Telling you
how annoying you are
You knock the fitted sheet
off the bed by accident
“I would rather sleep on the floor
than with you
because sleeping with you
is fucking terrible”
You become anxious,
on edge everyday
I just have to be better,
you think to yourself
Maybe it will get better
like it was in the beginning
So you shrink down
and try to be good
Because you are bad
you can’t do anything right
there is something wrong with you
Or else he would be nice, right?
He embarrasses you
in front of his family
You try to stick up for yourself
“God it’s like you don’t even know me,
it was a JOKE.”
But I didn’t laugh
my face got red
chest tightening
as he made fun of me
You just wanted to make him happy
and in return he beats you down everyday
Maybe not with his fists
but with his words
Until you start believing it’s true
repeating every bad thing
about yourself everyday
Until tears well up in your eyes
Until you become a shell of a person
who is so stripped of who they are
that you don’t even
recognize yourself anymore
