Comment Bingo for Beginners
Very simple rules: connect 5 squares in a line by completing the task in each square
Very simple goals: encourage newbie or nervous commenters; encourage fandom writers to KEEP WRITING
Tumblr media
STEPS:
Download Bingo Card HERE (png) or HERE (jpg) or HERE (pdf)
Complete the tasks on the card, marking off each as you go, until you've completed 5 in a line (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal; NO double-dipping; kudos ♥️ is a free space)
POST your winning card (or list your filled squares) and tag @feedthefandomfest! Glory in your victory.
REWARD:
✨ victory badge ✨
Tag me when you earn a bingo (or double, triple, quadruple... FULL CARD bingo) and I'll reblog a shiny badge with your name on it to commemorate the win.
FAQ:
Can I comment on tumblr or only on AO3?
Either one is great! Some squares are more designed with AO3 in mind, but most can be adjusted to suit tumblr as well, so I say go for it. Tumblr fics deserve love, too.
Can one comment count toward multiple squares if the fic fits more than one category?
Since the goal is for as many fics to receive comments as possible, try to comment on a different fic for each square.
Is there a time limit?
Nope! Take your time or set your own deadline, whatever works for you. This blog is still in its early experimental stage, so feedback welcome. Play around and let me know what you like and what might be added/changed—including ideas for squares on future cards!
Do I have to record progress on the actual card?
Nope! If it’s easier to keep track in a different way, that’s fine. This is all very honor system, so if you say you earned a Bingo, we’ll call it a win 🎉
Some people have been tracking not just completed tasks, but the fics they read along the way, so that when they post a bingo, they can also promote the fics/authors in a little rec list. Not required, but definitely cool to see!
Can I adjust the task in a particular square to suit my comfort level?
Of course! If you deliver something in the spirit of the task, then it’s all good. Use your best judgement in constructing a comment that will make the author smile, and you can consider it a job well done.
In general, so long as each square has produced at least one comment, you’re golden and I salute you 🫡
Happy commenting!!

do you have reccommendations for tog fic? especially nicky/joe, especially their early days
Oh man, it has been a long time since I tried to scrape together a rec list, and honestly there are so many incredible fics that cover this topic, I can't even begin to recall all of them. But these few mostly canon-compliant early days stories immediately came to mind:
Covenant by Delphi - This is my absolute favorite. It's canon to me. Every time I read it, I lose my breath over how perfect it is.
Lessons Exquisitely Crafted by @kaydeefalls - What if Nicolo and Yusuf parted ways right after Jerusalem before they came back together again several years later?
The Dragon and The Other Matter by Survivah - The way this author writes Longing™️ is next level.
Ain't It Exciting You series by paigian - The best kind of early days yearning and feelings and smut.
What It Means to Be Married series by @knoepfchen - Early day JoeNicky from the boys' point of view, and then from Andromache and Quynh's point of view.
Retrograde by pinkninja - Not technically canon-compliant early days because it's a Time Traveler's Wife AU, but it does feature some early days content. (Also I'm obviously super biased about time travel fics lmao.)
And if you just want deeply researched, phenomenally written historical adventures with the Queer Quartet, you can't get any better than @non-un-topo aka bluetigerlilies.
I love these authors and there are dozens more authors I'd recommend for other kinds of fics besides pre-relationship/early days. I'm also forgetting so many fics right now and don't have the spoons to dig through my bookmarks too deeply. So if anybody else wants to reblog and add their unskippable seminal early days Kaysanova fics, please do!
Happy reading, anon!

A 2023 The Old Guard Rec List
I spent most of 2023 trying to make a dent in my AO3 'to read' list rather than reading new fics, so I know I must've missed some fantastic fics from the year. But here are a few of my favorites posted in 2023 that I did read, in no particular order.
Shackled -- @beepbeepsan T. Canon divergence. Joe and Nicky fight back on the plane.
there'll be feasting in jerusalem next year -- paigian M. In which Nile becomes a city, fights off an interdimensional Lovecraftian horror, and falls in love. Not necessarily in that order.
Malta, 1976 -- dana_norram (@negotiumcrucis) E. A time in Malta. Not THE time in Malta, but one of many. (Featuring Nicky in tiny 70s shorts.)
Overdrive -- @goldheartedsky T. Modern AU. When Booker's abusive wife finds out about his reciprocated feelings for Andy and disappears with the kids, Andy can't sit on the sidelines anymore. (Second in a series)
we can't keep meeting like this -- rupzydaisy (@genyathefirebird) G. Death has many faces and Andromache has one, which makes her easier to recognise over the years as they work for the living and the dead.
Circulus -- @isabellehemlock M. Five years after Joe and Nicky got tangled up with Jack the Ripper, they try once again to take a vacation but destiny wants to lend a hand in closing the circle left behind from the ripples of their actions. (Second in a series, technically from December 2022)
so i'll try to talk refined -- paigian M. In which Joe and Nicky talk about poetry instead of their feelings.

2023 Fanfic Reflections
Tagging: With no pressure, @beepbeepsan, @isabellehemlock, @alllthequeenshorses, @genyathefirebird, and anyone else who wants to play.
What is your favorite thing you created?   “A Little Trust” because it was my first fic in The Witcher fandom. I was nervous to try something new and starting off with an AU, but I love the idea of Lambert running a floral shop that’s a front for poisons and antidotes for this underworld of killers-for-hire.
Which work are you proudest of?  “Scene by Scene” I had a nearly completed fast draft of this story by the end of 2020, but it took me nearly three years to edit and post it. My standards changed, my skills changed, The Old Guard fandom shrunk considerably, but the emotional payoff speaks for itself.
Is there anything you are proud of that you achieved this year? I finished “Scene by Scene.” I posted 14 other fics, nearly doubling my total on AO3.
Did you explore anything new this year? (A new way to be creative, a trope you didn’t write before, or an idea you hadn’t thought of earlier, etc.) I started writing for a new fandom, which I had resisted because I still love TOG and have a ton of ideas and drafts, but to my surprise, writing for The Witcher also got me back into writing, in general, including for The Old Guard. I also did 48-hour challenges ten times. Having that deadline for posting doesn’t let me second-guess my choices.
Which work gave you the most difficulty? Either “Between You and Me (and You)” because it’s a Tenet time-travel PWP with two versions of the same character who canonically does not have a name, or “Buy Me Some Peanuts” because I completely restarted this Witcher baseball AU when I realized I’d started the story way too early for a flash fic. Also I cut like half the baseball jargon and I still feel like it’s jargon heavy.
What was your biggest creative challenge this year? I’m still not great at balancing new ideas, completed drafts that need editing, WIPs that aren’t ready to post, and WIPs that are already partially posted. Adding a new fandom gave me this surge of creativity and productivity, but I also have even more ideas. What am I going to post next? Not even I know.
Which work brought you the most joy? All of them, in different ways, but to choose one, “A Changing Tide.” I wanted to write something new solely for me, so I picked some prompts off a list and ended up with a fun TOG pirate AU.
Which of your works do you think people should check out? It depends on your interests. For The Witcher, I’d say “At Your Back” is representative of how I think about canon-- a web of witchers who trust and care about few others but will also trust those who’ve earned their loved ones’ trust. For The Old Guard, I strayed from my typical mission-fic this year for mostly PWPs, but “A Changing Tide” might be the most representative.
Do you have creative plans for next year?  Is there anything exciting you’re currently working on? For The Witcher, I’d like to finish “All Our Truths, Crossed Out,” keeping doing flash challenges that spark ideas, and work on a cursed!Geralt fic through January. For The Old Guard, I have two completed fast drafts that need heavy edits (one’s a sequel to the a/b/o “Rapid Boiling” and one’s a sorta spiritual prequel to “Hold Tight”), a Keane-centric futurefic that I adore but have only written about half of the fast draft, and the possibility of more pirates.
Lastly, any words of wisdom or anything else you would like to share? Have fun. Write what you want to write. You might be surprised what other people like. Finishing things can be helpful, but so can setting things aside.

10 and 16 for ao3 wrapped? :)
10. What work was the quickest to write?
Probably “with safety between us.” One of the problems I have with doing 48-hour The Witcher Flash Fiction Challenges this year is that I know I can write 1000 words in an hour if I’ve been passively brainstorming, so I tend to start way later than I should for my own sake. I think I wrote, edited, and posted this one in three hours.
16. What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag?
“canon-typical violence” I guess that’s what happens when my two biggest fandoms at the moment are both about trained fighters trying to save people.
Thanks for asking.

For Dawn, who had the absolutely brilliant idea of mashing together The Old Guard and Castle in the Sky!

I did screenshot traces to get things going, and then modified from there! Andy would make a truly excellent sky pirate, I think.

my friend just told me that there's a secret second dashboard that solely contains posts from people you've turned on post notifications for, and when i click the link in the messages it opens it within the tumblr app, so the tumblr app also has a secret second dashboard for post notification blogs, and the only way to access it is to open the link for it within the app.
i literally love tumblr
