So after the spoilers for Chap 257 dropped, I saw some tweets clarifying the meaning of the Kanji Sukuna used in the chapter when referring to his mother, and the overall reveals in the chapter got me thinking.
I’m making this post as a way of gathering my thoughts, personal speculations and where I think all of this connects to Sukuna’s character and the information Gege has given us over the years. Nothing I say is by any means new information, but like I said, I’m just collecting my thoughts here. By the way, just a warning, this post contains SPOILERS for the JJK Manga! If you don’t like that, please don’t read this!
Something I’ve noticed is that the theme of “Hunger” and symbolism of “Cooking/Food” is heavily referenced with Sukuna throughout the Manga. Gege in a previous Fanbook has disclosed Sukuna’s favorite Hobby to be “Eating”.
Tumblr media
This theme is again very much ingrained within Sukuna’s cursed techniques and even his Domain Expansion, the “Malevolent Shrine”. With his two main techniques being “Dismantle” and “Cleave” are cutting-type attacks. He is also able to use a Flame-Arrow, and Fire is essential for making Food. The Shrine in his Domain Expansion literally has mouths on all sides, looking eager to chew down anything in-front of them!
Tumblr media
This symbolism also heavily influences Sukuna’s own manner of speech, and the way he speaks to other characters in the series as well. With his post-fight chat with Jogo before his death, Sukuna mentions Jogo lacking the “Hunger” to take control of his desires, preventing him from reaching the heights of Gojo Satoru. Before the Start of their fight in Shinjuku, Sukuna called Gojo a “Nameless Fish on top of his cutting board”, and that he was going to start by “Peeling off the scales”(refering to Gojo’s infinity). There’s also further symbolism that supports this by analyzing the Kanji and meaning of Sukuna’s “Malevolent Shrine” but I’m not very educated on that so I won’t be opening that point here.
What all of this points to is that Eating and Food……is extremely important to Sukuna, to the point that it literally affects him in manners innumerable.
Eating is an instinct, a necessity for the survival of every single living being.
And In the face of extreme Hunger and starvation, even those with the strongest will could lose their Humanity and revert to the basic animalistic side of their existence. (The Heian Period also had a Famine, although I believe the timing to be a bit off, but do with this info as you see fit)
In JJK Chapter 257, it is revealed to us that Sukuna and his Twin were most likely starving in the womb of their starving mother.
On the brink of starvation, Sukuna had to consume his “other self”(his twin), so that he could survive.
Btw, this tweet and this thread gives additional characterisation to Sukuna:

More context (and reactions :P):

This reveals to us that indeed, Sukuna was born a twin. And as we all know, “Twins” are seen with extreme scrutiny in Jujutsu Society, they’re not well liked. This too in a period where Cursed Spirits and Jujutsu Sorcery was at its peak, it is not far-fetched to assume that his Mother may not have been treated very well by the people in her surroundings, especially as she bore twins.
When Kashimo asks if Sukuna was born the Strongest or if he made himself the Strongest, this is the response Sukuna gave to him:
Tumblr media
When you think about it, how do you think the people around them would have reacted when the woman: who was supposed to birth two twins, gave birth to a single child instead? and that child had consumed his other twin in the womb itself?
No doubt people would’ve been horrified, disgusted and even revulsed. With the woman and her newborn child.
This would’ve led to their further ostracisation in the already very close-minded society. Unable to fend for herself and her newborn child, it must’ve been difficult for Sukuna’s mother to survive. I feel like somewhere along the line, Sukuna was left alone to fend for himself at an extremely young age. To protect himself from both Curses and Society alike.
This is why I believe Sukuna knows what true starvation, weakness and hunger feels like. Both in the emotional and literal sense. He was left without another person caring about him or his well-being, in a cut-throat period where it was “Fight or be killed”.
Powerful curses roamed all across Japan, nowhere was safe. Simply be strong, or you'll die. There's no room for weakness. And initially, a kid!Sukuna was weak, as anyone would be in the beginning when they're just starting out in this world. (and maybe, he didn't have much to eat, leading to long periods of starvation? :') )
I believe it is this debilitating hunger, and feeling of weakness that eventually led to Sukuna’s current Hedonistic mindset.
He’s essentially traumatised by it, and believes that it was his own weakness that led him to experience this sheer starvation. That he deserved to feel this way because he was weak then. Perhaps, the people around him were right, that as long as they have the power and strength to overcome anything, they’re free to do as they please; And there is nothing anyone else could do about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I feel like the irony here is that Sukuna himself, must’ve been a “weakling” before eventually rising the ranks to become History’s Strongest Sorcerer. This is also why he values Strength so much.
Ultimately, Sukuna has decided that there was nothing more important than being strong enough to fulfill your own desires. And “eating” is one of his most important desires. It’s his favourite thing to do, the one he derives the most pleasure out of. And like an animal, whose main focus is to consume, consume and consume. He too, simply consumes.
Most morals likely have no meaning to him. He doesn’t care who he hurts, what he does, as long as he’s able to get what he wants. And this isn’t limited to eating.
This is why people referring to Sukuna as a “Natural Disaster” is so befitting of him. Because Natural Disasters also don’t care about what or who they’re destroying, they just come and go, wreaking havoc appropriate for their nature and magnitude.
I believe Sukuna himself has said lines similar in nature, when talking to Kashimo:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I’m not sure how Sukuna perceives or even experiences this “Love”, because I think he has a rather very warped idea of it. I do think that this definition of love is similar to the one that Gojo also understands, but I don’t think he knows what “love” truly is. I’m not sure how I could comment on this, but I do think that Sukuna’s emotionally starved, whether he realises that or not.
Because, like Kashimo himself asked Sukuna “What is the point of dividing your soul into 20 different parts and then traversing across time if you’re satisfied with this?” we do not know the answer to that yet.
But many people have speculated that “Black Box” panels in JJK manga represent a curse (either self-inflicted or put by someone) on the speaker. Like, take a look over here where Sukuna reiterates the same dialogue, except it looks like he’s trying to reassure himself:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This once again shows that Sukuna has only ever strived for himself, in the same hedonistic fashion, to a very very extreme degree. It is possible that he's been lacking something, and he himself does not realise that he’s lacking it. Maybe it was this subconscious feeling, that led to Sukuna agreeing to Kenjaku’s plan of dividing his soul into 20 different parts, and to traverse across time as a Cursed Object.
Sukuna’s an incredibly complex character, and I’m excited to see where this goes. Gege has put extra care in the way he characterizes and depicts Sukuna, and again, I’m really sad that a lot of that characterization gets lost in translation. Still, I’m going to try my best to understand and get the most accurate feel of his character as I possibly can.
If you made it this far, Thank you for reading! And if you would like, please do leave a comment in the tags or replies because I would love to read what other people think of this and just Sukuna in general. I do not see a lot of people doing critical analysis of him, and a lot of his actions are seemingly swept under the rug. I don’t like that, so hopefully this contributes to people focusing more on Sukuna and his character. (/^v^)/ <3

Hmmmmm….. ok so… here’s what I can say about Chapter 257:
Sukuna ate his twin.
Both Sukuna and his twin were considered as “one” according to him.
His twin’s soul travelled or wandered around.
The soul was (finally??) reincarnated as Itadori Jin, Yuji’s father.
It automatically makes both Sukuna and Jin a twin.
Kenjaku and Jin *married* then gave birth to Yuji.
Kenjaku also sealed a cursed object, which is one of Sukuna’s finger, within Yuji before he was born - to ensure his strength as the vessel.
My question(s) / I’m curious :
What happened to the twin’s soul after Jin died? If the soul travels (after the original host has been eaten or specifically died) until it gets reincarnated into someone else, did Yuji actually is the second reincarnation of Sukuna’s twin or did Yuji is just the child of the reincarnated twin’s soul? (I need someone to confirm or enlighten me about this)
Wasuke’s relation to Sukuna seems to be or get mysterious - however, he was the one responsible for the existence of Jin, and took care of Yuji after Jin died (this is what I assumed btw). Both Jin and Yuji were his blood, so who is Sukuna to Wasuke and who is Wasuke to Sukuna?
I feel like there are MORE to what Kenjaku did way back then. Did Kenjaku somehow mess around with Sukuna’s descendants that badly?

Spoiler warning- Chapter 257 of JJK
"bro's been a hater since day 1 blablabla considering the fact that he 'ate' his twin" However, he indeed, did not do that consciously as a malicious intent of survival and/or ending any competition. In fact, he didn't even 'eat' him like how people eat food.
What happened with the Ryomen twins is a case of the 'Vanishing Twin syndrome'. If one of the two foetus fails to develop properly it gets absorbed by the other twin foetus and the mother's body. Often the underdeveloped twin gets partially absorbed by the developed twin which often leads to appearance of extra appendages on the living twin.
Apparently shortage of proper nutrition to the mother could serve as a potential reason in causing one foetus to not develop properly and therefore get absorbed by the other.
Considering the Heian Era (1000+ years ago), medical science was probably not that advanced and therefore when a child was born with 4 hands and 4 feet, 4 eyes as well, it's pretty obvious that people called it a monster and despised it.
Therefore it is highly possible that Sukuna was fed the idea that he 'ate' his sibling inside his mother's womb, from a very young age(the reason why he said 'ate' in a malicious tone). There's no way a foetus has any memory of what they did inside the womb. He was probably told that he has always been a sinful cursed child since day one, and of course no body wanted him.
Idk judge me for it but considering everything he could have gone through as a child, INCLUDING that fact that he had immense cursed energy which solidified the people's view on him being a demonic creature, he really might turn out to have one of the saddest backstories in the series. Toji was at least regarded a human, albeit not one with Cursed energy. As for Sukuna, I doubt the people around him even considered him one.

So, yall remember when Gege said this? I can't find the original source, sorry, but now that we knew Yuji had already one of Sukuna's fingers sealed in him since birth, I guess this doesn't feel too far now.
I mean who else is the most important character now other than the MC himself, right? Satoru is dead, Megumi is weakened, Nobara could have probably died too and unfortunately Yuji is the one left standing while others including Yuta are not available now [after countless attacks by Sukuna.]
Tumblr media
But then, who's going to defeat Sukuna if he successfully eats Yuji? He will become even more powerful, plus the merger is yet to happen. Something is a bit fishy here...

Anon is here to bully you about Sukuna again. Uncle Sukuna. Ate his twin in the womb to survive Sukuna. Which implies,
1) Sukuna’s mother/family tried to have him aborted and he ate his way out.
2) The pregnancy killed his mother and he ate his way out.
(Wow that wanting to eat the women and children coming full circle.)
I lean towards 1) since he calls himself an 忌み子 (Imigo) - which best translates to an abomniable unwanted child. It doesn’t just mean the child wasn’t wanted. It’s more like that they should have never existed. (A lot more resentment to justify infantcide in the connotation.)
Kenjaku might have orchestrated Sukuna’s original birth to begin with since the twin’s soul would have had to been aquired quickly after the body being eaten in utero. (This freak has definitely been controlling how the Itadori bloodline breeds after stealing that soul.) Uraume hates Kenny and this kind of manipulation would explain their anger. Regardless, it seems like Kenjaku wants to keep Sukuna as a lab rat for all eternity if Yuji being the perfect cage is anything to go by. (Screw that bastard for real.)
Tumblr media
These are good ideas my friend. Here’s what I think happened though:
Fetus Sukuna eats his twin, is later born and lives then dies. Kenny, who I Will refer to as Brain Blast, is only involved in turning him into a cursed object, and then decides to play the beloved game of Sims 3 with the Itadori family.
Actually I forgot what I was thinking because I remembered that I wanted to play The Sims 🙏 and then remembered again that I can’t because those losers locked me out of my account when rebranding from Origin to EA, and they won’t give it back.

With the reveal that Jin is the apparent reincarnation of Sukuna's twin or whatever, I'm now really curious about the relationship between Jin and Kenny
Yeah, me too. I thought maybe Kenjaku used that memory manipulation technique they put on Shino also on Jin, but not to make him believe they're Kaori like some theorized, but to bring back his memories from when he was Sukuna's twin. His "babies remember more than we think" makes me believe that he definitely must remember something, be it through Kenjaku's meddling or maybe he was always vaguely aware of it and Kenjaku just brought it to the forefront. If Jin remembers Sukuna, then he would have more reason to go along with Kenjaku's whole plan, help them out even and it would explain his intense wish for a child. Honestly my ideal scenario because this would mean that Kenjaku didn't manipulate him much, certainly not through some illusions, they simply got him to comply by telling him the truth about who he is and what happened to him in the past. Maybe he always felt like something was wrong with him or something was missing and Kenjaku gave him an answer. Would make their relationship much more personal and a bit more equal.
Tumblr media
Also, he always gave me weird vibes in the flashback. He looks strangely obsessive the one time we get a good look at his face. The shading emphasizes it even more. He doesn't even really smile. Knowing what we do now, I think there's definitely more to him than just a guy who misses his wife and really wants to be a dad. It also gives him protecting and defending Kenjaku a new dimension and makes it even more clear that he is very much aware that they are not Kaori (as we could guess before because Jin never actually calls Kenjaku "Kaori" and doesn't react to Wasuke bringing up her death). He's not just being delusional or hanging out with them out of sentimentality for Kaori, but Kenjaku could've actually helped him or significantly changed his life, so he might feel some fondness for them for that. He would also of course disregard what his father is saying because Wasuke most likely doesn't know the whole story and might just seem ignorant from Jin's point of view. Or at least he was ignorant at this point, he must've found out more later, which was the reason he tried to warn Yuuji about his parents.

Yuji really giving out Black Flashes like candy (as he should, I'm here for it always) and Sukuna is like "is he really trying to be equal to me"!
You know what's hilarious about this?
Knowing Yuji, he actually probably doesn't give a damn about being on his level. He just wants him gone. Sukuna, I'm sorry, but you ain't fighting someone trying to prove his worth to you. You're fighting someone who wants you dead.
This reminds me of how some of the fandom are so adamant about throwing powerscaling into the mix, sometimes to even bash Yuji when Yuji is a character who isn't into all that "I want to be the best" bullcrap.
And why should he be?? THERE ARE PEOPLE DYING AND YOU REALLY THINK THIS KID IS GOING TO CARE ABOUT SURPASSING OTHERS FOR THE #1 SPOT?!
Can't even acknowledge all what he's done before up until this point... too busy bashing him and now wanting to switch up like this kid ain't been a menace since day one... well... in his middle school days...

So I re-read ch 244 and these scenes feel very different now that we get more clarifications from ch 252 and 256.
Tumblr media
Gojo was unsealed around Nov 19th which left 5 weeks to Dec 24th, the Shinjuku showdown. This meeting seems to happen quite early within that 5 weeks cz after that we knew Yuji and co been training hard for a month. Logically only those fighting in Shinjuku were training so Noritoshi might have left very early bfore they start all the hard trainings and further strategic meetings. This notion is also supported by how in many other flashbacks of their small strategic talks in further chapters, Noritoshi was never seen again even in the shadow so safe to say he had already left the quarter by then.
Tumblr media
Then we know Choso taught him BM and even RCT. So to me now it looks like Noritoshi 'taught' him the basics of BM at the beginning, prolly more into theories, and cz it's the basics it's pretty important. Then he left the place and Choso was the one continue teaching as well as 'training' Yuuji all the practical aspects of BM and RCT and just training/sparring with him in general to up their skills and reach that perfect and harmonious synchronized movements we saw in chapter 256.
Tumblr media
I have explained before that Yuuji said "he sucks at 'teaching'" most likely cz Choso not into theories himself as he is self-taught, he's naturally gifted and talented (much like Higuruma, perhaps more instinct than theories) hence why Yuuji cudn't comprehend lol. Logically, it seems like Noritoshi taught Yuuji separately or in separate times from Choso training Yuuji hence he seemed to have no clue whether Choso was actually bad at teaching Yuuji or not. However, we had the proof in chapter 252 that when he instructed Yuuji to calm down for RCT, it didn't look to me at all that Choso was bad at 'teaching'. His explanation was clear, easy to follow, and he looked very patient. Of course it doesn't eliminate the fact that what we saw in ch 252 might also be the result of Choso and Yuuji's continuous training together so they were now at the same page with the way Choso taught him.
Which brought us to the other option (thanks to ch 256 that now we know Yuuji can't do convergence well yet) that Yuuji was just badmouthing Choso *affectionately* cz he cudn't master it yet and blamed his big brother out of frustration 🤣 and Choso looked surprised not only cz he didn't think Yuuji would say that to an outsider but also I imagine his surprised look also saying "wait...what?? So you're blaming me now?" Lmao he knew Yuuji still not able to do it yet but because he's such a good onii-chan he didn't say anything and just accepts the accusation thrown at him.

I see a lot of complaints lately that Sukuna is too strong and that the protagonists could never defeat him because they are so much weaker. Everything seems hopeless now that not even powerhouse Gojo is here.
For one, I'd like to say that that is very much intentional. A villain should seem like an impossible hindrance, he should be someone who makes the heroes struggle and lose, sometimes often. Not every strategy is going to work or else the story would become very predictable if everything works out on the first attempt. On top of that, jjk has established that the whole point of Sukuna is his overwhelming sense of self and his disregard for others which in turn makes him so inhumanly strong. If you want to be as strong or stronger than him, you not only need some innate skill, but you would have to throw away your humanity as well. Yuuji's entire purpose was to oppose Sukuna in that regard. He is weak, but he cares for others and he has a will that Sukuna can't break no matter how much he tries. So the way to defeat Sukuna isn't by becoming stronger than him, that would only buy into his ideology and not fundamentally challenge him. It is what Gojo and Kashimo tried to do and they failed for it because that is the wrong approach. Yuuji has to be the one to break Sukuna's ideology of the strong, that might makes right, only this way could he truly win over Sukuna. Because at the heart of it their fight is a struggle of ideals. Sukuna himself announced that his goal is above all else to crush Yuuji so he won't get up anymore because Yuuji makes him question himself, his philosophy, his entire life and by defeating him, he proves himself and his way of thinking/living to be superior.
The question remains how exactly they will accomplish this. I don't know the specifics, but I think it will have to come down to hurting Sukuna's soul, to attack him at his foundation. Yuuji's punches to shake the bond of Sukuna and Megumi's souls, Jacob's Ladder's attack of the cursed object and Maki's Split Soul Katana are what have shaken Sukuna the most and in a way he can't easily recover from. It's not about strength, it's about shaking up Sukuna's very being and his root in this world. I also think Megumi will have to play a role in it. With Yuuji's help he could find the will to stand up against Sukuna and if not regain control of his original body, at least hinder him long enough for the others to kill Sukuna once and for all. Sukuna knows he has Megumi buried deeply and crushed his spirit, he's confident that even if Yuuji reaches Megumi, he could never be a substantial threat because he has accomplished with Megumi what he wants to do with Yuuji. He is weak and broken and had to submit to his will/soul. That confidence has to be shaken up.
We'll have to see about the rest, but those are two points I think are very important in defeating Sukuna. I also think that Sukuna has to release Tengen for that plot point to have a satisfying end. Tengen just dying inside Sukuna would be very unsatisfying, waste a whole lot of setup and also make for a pretty bad final fight because Sukuna is a very simple villain and one that is only really important for Yuuji. If he doesn't get defeated, Sukuna won't destroy Japan, he won't fundamentally change the foundation of jujutsu society, he is build on it and their adherence to strength after all. He doesn't pose a systematic threat and inspires change like Kenjaku did and to make up for Kenjaku's presence no more being the greater looming threat, we only have Tengen and the merger to fill that hole. So Sukuna has to release her at some point.
I'd also like to say, that I acknowledge that the current situation and how Gege has set Sukuna up are not without its faults. I know that defeating Sukuna through strength isn't the way to go because of, well, the entire message of jjk, but I also think that Sukuna's struggle with Yuuji and their opposing ideals have fallen short in this final fight so far. The fight in Shinjuku is far too formulaic. It feels like the protagonists are doing a relay race and Sukuna is just passively standing around and lets them do their thing, casually swiping one person away, so someone else can fill their spot. This will hopefully change soon, but I also think there was too little focus on the thematic meaning of this whole fight. We got Sukuna reflecting on his ideals or lack thereof, but then nothing really came of it so far. He boldly claimed to want to crush Yuuji's spirit only to not change anything in his approach towards the main characters and more importantly Yuuji. Instead he's distracted by Yuuta and Maki and whoever else catches his fancy, similar to the Higuruma situation. It just feels like there is a personal approach missing in this fight and it's more focused on flashy action than characters.
It worked well in the past, like for example I think Kashimo's fight despite being short was actually very well written. It wasn't just about Kashimo's strength, it was about their understanding of the world, their values that are similar to Sukuna, but don't entirely line up. It felt more like a discussion than a fight, a feeling you also get with Kenjaku and Takaba and other important fights in the series like Maki vs Naoya. Currently, there is more of a focus on chapping away at Sukuna's strength than anything substantial. It is there in parts, but I would like more. But again, this could improve in the future. At least Sukuna finally seems to take things seriously now.
