Thank you so much for tagging my thoughts on Legolas!
Looking forward to reading the other links.
Here’s one of my Legolas fics that I’m particularly fond of: Let the Memories Be Good
It kind of wrecks me when the media reduces Legolas to the overpowered hot guy who defies gravity.
Like...
Did we watch the same movies?
Not only is this guy just an insanely honorable and fierce member of the Fellowship, but he's an infinitely heartfelt and dedicated friend. He would go to the ends of the earth to follow Aragorn, to save Merry and Pippin, to fight in the name of Frodo Baggins.
He's lost his mother, he was raised by a grieving and emotionally absent father, he was sheltered from the rest of the world for years, he went from insulting and threatening dwarves to protecting and practically EXISTING for one. Not to mention everything he did post war of the ring, uniting his people yet removing himself from his royal status??
And just to think, he has to grapple with immortality. To other elves it doesn't matter, but to him, his entire life has become these mortal friends he's grown to call family. And he has to go on living while they all slowly die.
And yeah, he's a fucking INSANE FIGHTER. Like BEYOND REASON.
I get that to the dude bros he's just a hot guy for the girls to thirst over but in reality he's just as complex as the rest of them and I'd really like for us to acknowledge it for once.

Our February/March challenge focuses on side ships!
Tell us about your favorite side ship! Is it Faramir and Eowyn? Eomer and Lothiriel? Sam and Rosie? Surprise us with stories of Celebrian and Elrond. Or take us back to the shores of Aman and the relationships forged across the water.
Or will you give us the unfulfilled love stories of Aegnor and Andreth? Finduilas and Gwindor?
Or is there one that you particularly love? Bring on all the side ship for this prompt!
We look forward to your stories for this challenge!! Please submit to [email protected] by March 31, 2024.
Your mods
Sian22 and lotrfan

i absolutely LOVE how we hyperfixate on the smallest details like the fucking gold ribbons, like love grew between them, like the whole celebrimbanner thing. just. tolkien wrote a tiny little line (that may have only seen the world years after he died) and thousands of people made it the point of their existance. we write fics about it, draw fanart of it, make endless jokes about it. good for us

aragorn's terrible, horrible, no good, very bad week:
the fellowship breaks on his watch
forced to choose who to follow
runs over 200 kilometers in under four days
thinks merry and pippin are dead
meets the reborn gandalf (a rare win), immediately has to do a 180 and ride to edoras
immediately after that needs to ride to battle
takes part in a battle which takes place over the whole night
gets maybe 20 hours of sleep over the course of the whole week
and, I cannot stress this enough, this is all still very far from over

People seemed interested in Library Orc Blorbo so I decided to write down my headcanons about him:
His name is Garthaglir (it’s Sindarin for “poem keeper”)
He renamed himself after discovering a love for library sciences, shortly after he moved to the valley
Rivendell’s head librarian
Used to be an extremely dangerous warrior, now considers himself retired
Extremely tall and buff, blue skin, salt-and-pepper hair and a well-trimmed beard
Very distinguished, very polite
Has a tiny pair of spectacles he uses to read because he's farsighted
He doesn’t look like an old man but he is one deep in his heart
He was one of the first reformed orcs to end up in Rivendell, so he helps other orcs adjust to living there
Basically invented Middle Earth’s version of the Dewey Decimal system
Look, Rivendell’s library is like, unfathomably huge, there’s 6000+ years of books in there, someone had to organize it
He, Elrond, and Erestor are the only people who have keys to the part of the library where they keep the cursed books
The three of them also have a monthly book club
He holds a weekly story time for the kids
(Yes, he does do funny voices, no, you are not allowed to comment on it)
Has tracked people down at 3 AM before because “M’am? M’am you have an overdue book, here, I brought my library stamp would you mind just checking this out again? You can keep it out for another month that way. Just a moment, ah, yes thank you, I’ll be on my way now. Excellent choice in reading material.”
He has a fancy sunhat he wears outside during the day so the sun doesn’t burn him, it was a gift from small Arwen and he cherishes it
He has a library cat, her name is Mittens and he would die for her
Uses his free time to teach himself different languages; there are hundreds in Rivendell’s books
Enjoys recommending books to visitors, he’s gotten really good at getting a read on what people will like
Personally, when he’s in the mood for fiction, he prefers a good mystery

Telerian harbor, this one just a quick raw concept that I made so that I could grasp the atmosphere of Telerian culture before I create the final illustartion.

The last time I read Lord of the Rings, I particularly focused on the songs and the lore that they communicated. Now that I've re-read The Silmarillion, which establishes that this universe was created from song, the music in LotR takes on a new dimension. The whole history of this world is recorded in the lyrics, with successive generations building onto the story, right up to Bilbo and Sam composing verse at the end of the Third Age. Participating in the act of creation.

I think we should stop telling people that The Silmarillion is this incredibly dense, dry, practically academic text that you need to be some kind of modern day lore master to comprehend. It's actually a very good book and there's no reason to be afraid of it.

Raw concept of Beleg Cuthalion. Quick sketch done with pencil on paper. Beleg is one of my favorite characters in Silmarillion.
