uhhhhh not to be a Hannibal Lecter apologist but like. Imagine you’re born wrong. Just a little bit. Just a little odd and then something so so horrible happens that it changes the way you think and the way you love and then you have to navigate the world with the knowledge that you just don’t fit and you make a living out of talking to people who could maybe, maybe relate to you, and you keep prodding them and pushing them, be like me, but they just aren’t like you, they never will be. And then there comes this man and he has to get you. He must. Because he literally can’t help it. And you push him and suddenly it turns out that finally, there’s a person who understands you and doesn’t despises you for what you are and he sees you. He sees you and he still wants to spend time with you. And then he betrays you. And you try to kill him because he managed to hurt you, and you never want to be hurt again, but after that he’s still there, he’s still looking for you. And you turn yourself in for all the horrible things you’ve done and you keep waiting for him, and he comes back. He comes back and you escape and you become one and he pulls you off a cliff after saying it’s beautiful. Yes I know he eats people but. y’know

Hannibal has a really interesting and profound thesis about self discovery if you are cool and queer enough to read into it but I genuinely think my favorite motif in Hannibal that seems to recur a few times in that vein is “killing parts of yourself do not work”.
See, Hannibal snaps Franklyn Froideveux’s neck in the same episode we get him discussing his obsession with Will with his own therapist, Bedelia. Hannibal’s disgust with Franklyn is a disgust with himself, and he kills Franklyn only to find himself more desperately fascinated by Will than ever
In contrast, Will kills Randall Tier at Hannibal’s prompting, and ostensibly he does it as part of his becoming, to maintain the “illusion” that he is going to run away with Hannibal, but this isn’t the only time Will kills a serial killer that’s more evolved in their Becoming than he is- but it is the first time he did it with his hands.
The very act of killing Tier, of trying to kill off the savage animal part of himself, brought him closer to that brink, closer to monsterhood. For what is more savage than self denial, and the killing of brethren?
I find it interesting because in the book Red Dragon, Will SUCCEEDS in killing off this part of himself. Or, Molly does. With the Red Dragon’s death, he retires to fucking Florida. Vicious repression and suburban heterosexuality wins. And in the show, killing the Dragon, a parallel to Will’s becoming, only succeeds in transforming him further under the flame

Hi my name is Count Doctor Hannibal Lecter VIII M.D. im a cannibal (that’s how I got my name) and I have shiny brown hair with gold streaks and silver tips that reaches my mid-neck and maroon eyes that reflect red pinpoints like limpid blood and a lot of people tell me I look like Sandro Botticelli (AN: if u don’t know who he is get da hell out of here!). I’m not related to Lady Murasaki but I wish I was because she’s a major fucking hottie. I’m a cannibal but my teeth are straight and white. I have pale golden skin. I’m also a doctor, and I own a psychiatric practice in Baltimore where I help my patients (I’m forty-seven). I’m an aristocrat (in case you couldn’t tell) and I wear mostly brown. I love Garrison Bespoke and I buy all my clothes from there. For example today I was wearing a brown plaid suit with a matching silk pocket square and a blue paisley tie, blue socks and brown oxfords. I was wearing pink lipstick, beige foundation, gold highlighter and concealer on my eyebrows. I was walking outside the BSHCI. It was snowing and raining so there was no sun, which I was very happy about. A lot of fbi agents stared at me. I put up my middle finger at them.

now. i know what you're thinking. i know. "kallie oh my god let this quote die". but no. because i've had yet another thought.
"achilles, lamenting the death of patroclus. whenever he’s mentioned in the iliad, patroclus seems to be defined by his empathy."
"he became achilles on the field of war. he died for him there, wearing his armor."
i think by now we've all already seen the posts or recognized that hannibal and will have swapped clothes for the battle between them and dolarhyde. if not, here's a nifty little visual (2x13 mizumono, 3x10 ...and the woman clothed in the sun)

and if you're like me, you'd think "oh that's really sweet. he's wearing hannibal's shirt. it shows their lines beginning to blur". but you know what else it shows?
"[...] he died for him there, wearing his armor."
will went into war (the fight against dolarhyde) wearing hannibal's armor, and he (presumably) died there. he died in hannibal's armor, as patroclus died in achilles'.
and even THEN.
"he did. hiding and revealing identity is a constant theme throughout the greek epics."
"as are battle-tested friendships."
where will embraces his becoming, and steps into himself - where he casts off the persona of the man he'd been displaying and reveals who he really is underneath, which is a very constant theme throughout hannibal and will's relationship ― the battle to see each other, to understand.
"achilles wished all greeks would die, so that he and patroclus could conquer troy alone. took divine intervention to bring them down."
if you know me then you know, of course, i love love love the religious symbolism that hannibal is drenched in. and i think it's a very lovely parallel to the fact that hannibal, who sees himself as above but so intertwined with religion, and views will as his god, went to his death with the very man he worshipped.
you know. divine intervention.

thinking about this quote from bedelia , ' touch gives the world an emotional context , the touch of others makes us who we are . it builds trust ' and how in s1 will was all touch starved and also kinda hated it but hannibal slowly made him mune to his touch with just a hand on the shoulder etc. building up to fully grabbing his face in su-zakana . he built that trust . and did end up shaping will or at least showing him who he really was , also thinking about the way that will grabs onto hannibal in mizumono and twotl ,,,,
