Near end of Season 1 Iroh: Ever since I lost my son. I think of you as my own. Zuko: I know, Uncle. Did you know though? Even after those 3 years spent in exile together, it's apparent in how Zuko acts that he still does not know what having a healthy father-son relationship looks like. It has always rubbed me the wrong way how quickly this scene passed, and I chalked it up to just being a dramatic kid. Now after this whole Avatar Renaissance., I see that it might have intentionally been left like that because Zuko was not at the point where Iroh was. He didn't even know what being someone's son entailed, not really. By the time the two reconvene after Zuko's betrayal, Zuko has grown and understands how important his uncle is to him.
