since (sigh) apparently those Hornblower boys have moved into my head and they won't leave... perhaps I should describe the fic I'm not going to write for this Age of Sail fandom.
General who lives/who dies spoilers for Hornblower ensue.
It will surprise no one to learn that the fic I'm not going to write is Tragic Meta Nonsense feat. the unfortunate Lt. Kennedy. For those who do not know him: they glued together like four minor characters from Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, gave them the name of one of them, gave him a deathless bond with the hero (who, this being television, has to talk to somebody after all), put him through quite a bit of extra suffering, and then killed him off at the orders of the Forester estate, who apparently felt he was brightening Hornblower's life to a degree inconsistent with the novels.
(Obvious fic magnet and I am told, although I haven't dived in yet, that there's a lot of it.)
So he basically only exists in the show. But he technically exists in the books, in that there is a midshipman called Kennedy on the Indefatigable.
The universes can't be that far apart. What happens if they cross over: if a later version of show!Hornblower (who left his best friend dead in Kingston) runs into book!Kennedy (who isn't dead at all, having never set foot on the Renown, slightly remembers being shipmates in the Indy)?
The reason I'm not going to write this one is mainly that I am still not actually a historical fiction writer. But also I can't figure out where to take it that isn't just sad and weird. Then again, most of what happens to Hornblower is sad and weird because he, personally, is sad and weird.
Most of what I've written in my head is Bush trying to work out if the Captain's lost his mind. Poor Mr Bush.

It does rather shift into a new key now after a few chapters of fairly inconclusive political maneuvering!
I've fallen behind on Catriona the past few weeks, but I managed to catch up today, and had such a difficult time not charging ahead.

I did wonder about that!
All I can think is, Davie's taken remarkably good care of those letters from his boyhood, to still have them after all the adventures he's been through where he's often had nothing but what he stood up in.

Most of you are braver than me. I pick it out and I do eat the rest of the salad but I'm still thinking about that wilted leaf. Blech.
Curious whether others feel the same way I do about this!

maybe you wouldn't feel the need to keep sawyer semi-conscious all the time if you didn't keep going and hanging out in the room where he is!
I have to say, re Hornblower: Retribution, if I were Buckland I would simply do my paperwork in the gunroom or somewhere. They keep on going in there where Sawyer can yell at them. No one is making them do this!
