Remus was right, Abracadaquiri was definitely going to stay on his mind for a while. “No Hanks in the spank bank?” Sirius lobbed back, glad he was facing away from most partygoers simply because he wasn’t always that great at moderating his own volume. “What a shame.” His eyes were still on Remus’s hands sorting through alcohol bottles. Part of him wished he’d been smart enough to take the vermouth out, too, since he didn’t like the stuff, but figured his would be kind enough not to poison him that way. “I lied about one hint, though, Moony,” he continued, head tilting to indicate the impending Sophie’s Choice. “Watching you dwell on this is making me nervous. You’re right on the brink of snapping and throwing together a mix that’s going to poison me, I can tell. When you think of a Henry Rollins think, like, a German… Cowboy. Maybe bring back the mental image of all that leather you were talking about earlier.” Whiskey was a cowboy drink, more or less.

He shrugged, still chuckling at his own joke. “No Hanks. Got two of the Beatles, though,” he said, squinting into the middle distance, and then his smile dropped suddenly when he realized how that sounded. “Oh---please never repeat that, to anyone. I can’t even pretend to be proud of that...”
Sirius was pretty spot on, and Remus could tell the hint was offered out of desperation, but he’d take it nonetheless. “German cowboy?” A heavy line creased his brow as he settled into thinking about it seriously. “Whiskey, probably... and... schnapps?” He peered disbelievingly at his friend. “Honestly? That sounds vile, Padfoot. Peppermint or peach?” Both seemed like they would result in something positively toxic, and he couldn’t believe now that he’d put it together that Sirius actually enjoyed that.
He shook his head, not unlike when he got rain on his nose, as his brain rejected the entire concept of that drink. “No, no. You’re getting straight whiskey, and you’re gonna like it.” He brightened. “I think I’ve discovered what kind of bartender I am---the kind that serves two drinks, and one of them is whiskey. Take it or leave it.”

When Andromeda bit her lip and seemed to take on a look that was hesitatingly mischievous, Gust knew he’d convinced her enough that she’d convinced herself. He smiled, genially as she agreed before he gave a light shrug. “Why try to fight an innate quality? You, Andromeda Black, were born to stand out.” The gusto he spoke with took a tone for the dramatic before he settled into a quiet laugh. “You’ve always been a little different and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, I think. If you really are self-conscious, I’m sure a transfiguration or charm should work well enough.”
Tumblr media
If anyone else had said those words, she would have rolled her eyes without blushing. “And you, Augustus Rookwood,” she replied, purposely unfurling every syllable---because two could play the long full-name game, “were born to encourage people like me to do so.” He had always been an voice of understanding and compassion, in a sea of blank intolerance. It was wonderful to see him again, and she smiled, shaking her head and teasing. “I should’ve walked away the minute I saw you were here. You’ve always been far too encouraging of me.” That wasn’t a terrible idea, however. She chewed her cheek. “Alright, but only for a few minutes, and only to keep people from staring. Then it’s straight back into uniform.” She glanced around, then drew her wand. “Is there a spot away from all these people? I don’t want to risk altering my clothes... poorly... in full view of most of the Minisitry,” she whispered to him, grinning slightly. She was skilled at such charms, so disaster wouldn’t happen, but then again... it still could.

The Healer swept in and got to work, and Amos found himself somewhat soothed by the way she took control of the situation. Nothing quite like a sudden injury to remind Amos what, exactly, helplessness felt like. He was never any good at healing magic, and apparently not at all good in a crisis. Any sign of the missing tissue? Finally Amos’s stomach turned, and he bit down hard on his bottom lip before pivoting away from Terrence, shoving his hands down into his pockets. “Yeah, sure, Hatch, I’ll just go find the bits you tried to leave behind.” There was no guarantee he wouldn’t puke if he saw a mass somewhere on the ground but maybe he wouldn’t find it at all.  “You came out really fast, we appreciate it.” Amos spared a sidelong glance at the Healer as he trailed past the benches a little ways down the hall. She looked vaguely familiar, in the went-to-Hogwarts sort of way. “I guess he should’ve paid more attention to all those PSAs about intoxicated apparition we were subject to at school, eh?”
Tumblr media
“Intoxication and magic most definitely don’t mix, but with a loss of inhibitions, people often consider it worth the risk,” she agreed, partly directing the comment to her charge as she handed a pain relief potion to Mr. Hatch and instructed him to sip it. She applied a paste quickly to the wound, and with a practiced “Ferula,” bandaged it up well enough for the time being. If they didn’t locate the missing flesh, it wouldn’t be a complete loss, but he’d have more scarring than otherwise. “This was entirely avoidable,” she couldn’t help scolding him as she stood.
“At the very least, you have good friends,” she commended, then added quieter to the queasy-looking gentleman, “I’m impressed. Most people are not as composed when they see something like that.” To be fair after the first splinching wound she’d seen, she’thrown up in a decorative vase.

Sirius had gotten an Acceptable in Potions, himself. He kept dutifully quiet, though, and watched Remus mix his daquiri. The clearly intentional deviation was noted. That didn’t mean Sirius was going to say anything about it– he’d asked for this, and it was hard to really ruin rum. He was, however, delighted at both the pun and the flourish of the finished drink. He took the cup from Remus and swapped it for the water, taking a sip of an admittedly very tart daquiri. Honestly, not bad, but Sirius didn’t have much of a sweet tooth to begin with so it went down pretty smoothly. He spoke thoughtfully as he gave a quick running critique. “Points for trusting your gut and giving it an incredibly embarrassing name. It’s no Foggy Night, but it’ll do. And I’ve got to tell you, just about every other drink is exactly like a daquiri. Unless it’s a long island iced tea, and that’s just all of the alcohols and little bit of cola on top. Now that you’re trained, you’re good to take the rest of my shift for the night, right?” Sirius teasingly started to ease away from the bar before settling back into his initial half-reclined position. “Now, for my enjoyment, I’m gonna ask for a Henry Rollins next, which has two alcohols in it, and I think that’s going to be the only hint I’ve got for you.”
Tumblr media
“Embarrassing name?” Remus asked, offended and more than a little unbelieving. Some people just didn’t like to admit when brilliance landed before them. “You say that like you won’t be writing Abracadaquiri on every menu you possibly can from now on.”
Remus lunged to catch his fingers in the back of Sirius shirt before he could get too far away. “Don’t you dare abandon me here, with my one drink I did okay with,” he warned, and only released him when it became clear it was a joke. Not funny, in his opinion---not in the slightest. He’d sort of let the rest of the party drift into the background of his awareness, until Sirius had said that, and now he was reminded there was a room full of people at his back.
Though with a new challenge issued, he was sufficiently distracted again, and turned his attention to the possible bottles. “Well, there’s some things that I don’t think should be mixed, like whiskey and vodka, or vodka and tequila,” he reasoned aloud. “Amaretto and gin...” So he at least had some guesses at what it wasn’t. “You couldn’t have picked one with a more descriptive name? I’ve never tasted a Henry before.” It wasn’t said loud enough to reach anyone’s ears but Sirius’. He tried not to laugh at his own innuendo, and nearly managed it a good five seconds before cracking up.

“I’ll remember that next time.” And Edgar did note it. At the moment, he didn’t know any pregnant unicorns, so she was out of luck, but he wouldn’t forget. “Hm?” Edgar hummed as she looked over and he followed her gaze to see Sirius tending to the bar. “Aw, you didn’t tell me Sirius would be here!” And he could see Remus just across him. He had no doubt James was around. “The gang’s all here. I wonder who else is.” It’d been awhile since he saw much of his classmates and friends, so it was refreshing. “I owe Sirius three galleons. Remind me of that before we leave.” It was only latently when Amelia’s comment registered. “Oh, you don’t like Sirius? Is it professional or personal?”
Tumblr media
“I couldn’t tell you what I didn’t know.” She hadn’t had a hand in organizing this one----the past few weeks had been busy enough for their department that even if she’d taken an interest in it, she wouldn’t have had the time. “Three galleons?” She peered at him suspiciously. “Did you lose a wager?” Her lips quirked up at the teasing question, but she wasn’t about to start pouring out more of the man’s praises than she already had, so instead she played into it. “I think for many people it’s always a bit of both, with him. Shall we go say hello? Or would I lose you to their company for the rest of the evening if we did?"

“Oh, you’re what?” He let out a little gasp– Remus almost said it. But he caught himself, which took some of the joy out of it. “Fine, fine. Just my memories and whatever photos I can get from fifty yards,” Sirius agreed easily, palms lifting. Well, alright, then. He leaned out of their conversation to pour the water that would replace his new favorite drink. Sirius’s shaggy head lifted as Remus talked himself right out of his own concern. “I’d say its not hard, but I remember the D in Potions OWL, so for you it might not be easy.” He was moving to make room behind the bar, easing some of the more volatile magic ingredients away from Remus just in case. Muggle liquors were only ever flammable and he could handle that. “But I’ll show you some simple stuff. Ever make a daquiri, Moony? Just three ingredients, rum, syrup, lime. The ratio is as follows: three, one, two. This isn’t Felix Felicius, you’re allowed, no, encouraged to trust your intuition a little. The measurements don’t have to be exact.” The three bottles were aligned on the counter in the order he spoke of them for ease of use. He leaned his elbow up on the counter, content to watch Remus follow his directions.
Tumblr media
He’d suggested it, but the moment the bottles were in front of him, Remus regretted it. He didn’t even need Sirius to mention Potions. “I’m already having war flashbacks, actually. Although, for the record, I think at least half of my failure to brew anything was because I had certain friends around, hell bent on distracting me at key moments.” He sighed, then removed the jacket James had given him and carefully laid it on the stool beside him. If this went poorly, he didn’t want it to be a casualty.
“Three rum, one syrup, two lime.” Remus repeated, eyeing the bottles. It was easy enough, sure. He added a healthy dash of each bottle to the glass. “One.” Then set the syrup aside. “Two.” He poured in equal amounts of the rum and lime, mentally daring Sirius to tell him he was doing anything wrong. Then he put the lime aside with the syrup, and raised his brows at Sirius as he filled the rest of the drink with a “Three” of rum. “Abracadaquiri”, he announced when he was finished.

“That’s a positive way to look at it,” Gust mused with a small nod. “I’m sure since you’re on the clock, you might have to get back, but Reskling is somehow your boss and he did tell you to stay. Maybe you could hang around for an hour or so? You can consider it your lunch.” It been a while since he’d seen Andromeda. A few times since he’d graduated Hogwarts. Really, he heard of her mostly, nowadays. She was a great deal grown now. “I’d love to catch up, Andy,” Gust pressed, hope in his voice to convince her.
Tumblr media
“My boss’s boss, really.” But she was careful to not sound too put out by that. Just because he had the authority to waste her time, didn’t mean she needed to respect him for it. Her attention was redirected, however, when Gust tried to convince her to stay. She bit her lip, indecisive, before smiling. “Well, technically, it’s hospital protocol to have someone available to be on call during Ministry events, just in case something serious happens. But... it’s a volunteer duty more than anything else. And I am already here. I suppose I can spare a few minutes.” She looked down at her lime green robes, then over at his much more impressive outfit. “Although I’m not certain I can blend in.”
