LOUDER Even I, as a Kindaichi stan, can admit I don’t write enough Watari as I should...

You know. Someone somewhere is gonna be mad at me for saying this for whatever reason, but

The Haikyuu fandom has a trend of "when we post about seijoh, we're gonna leave Kindaichi out and pretend like he doesn't exist."

Like- I get that he's not everyone's favorite character type but come on- he's not that bad y'all are just m e a n.

Kindaichi content is so scarce and this is exactly why-

Maybe I'm one of the only people who notices this because I hyper focus on him but- that doesn't make it any better aha-

(i also noticed this with Watari too. The excuse is always "he's in the background/doesn't have a lot of obvious traits" but if you're writing for Matsukawa or Hanamaki, you absolutely cannot use that excuse, especially since most headcanons/fanfics with Mattsun and Makki are the fandom's made up personalities. If you can make up personalities for them and use those for the base of everything you write, you can do it for characters like Watari too. Just putting that out there)

kindaichi yuutarou is ur ideal boyfriend and the haikyuu wiki explains why:

“generally a good natured and agreeable person who gets along well w his teammates” — the kinda guy that gets along with your friends without being attracted to any of them

“open to feedback” “willing to adjust his play to match his setter, unless he feels the demands are unreasonable” — we love a reasonable and yielding man!

“not afraid to express his frustration and stand up for himself” — no repressed emotions or mixed signals here, he’s happy to clear the air with you!

“quite sensitive” “deeply affected by middle school feud with kageyama” “implied he feels RESPONSIBLE for their failed partnership despite having tried his best” — if things go awry and you guys break up, he won’t blame it on you or talk smack about you to his friends <3

“even after their estrangement, kindaichi still cares for his former teammate and asks hinata about kageyama’s wellbeing” — *not over you by gavin degraw starts playing*

in conclusion: kindaichi is communicative, a team player, endearing, and respectful!

not sure how to articulate this particular way i feel about the kitaichi incident but it’s just something about the way kindaichi saw firsthand how differently kageyama acts and treats his teammates at karasuno, significantly different from the king of the court kindaichi still perceived him as at the time

that disconnect between what kindaichi was seeing and what he wanted to believe to comfort himself from the trauma he experienced as well as the guilt he felt from his participation with the others in deliberately abandoning kageyama as a teammate and leader

and also the way kageyama saw how differently kunimi responds under oikawa’s leadership compared to the utter resentment he had for kageyama at kitaichi. seeing how someone who hated working with you respond so much more positively to someone else (especially someone you admire and for years have wanted to emulate) reinforces that feeling of something being wrong with you, that feeling that you yourself are the problem. that the way you are is inherently wrong

like it’s already suggested in multiple scenes throughout the series how kindaichi was clearly traumatized by the kitaichi experience and struggling to grapple with this kind of guilt as a 14-15 year old, which already hurts enough but then 387 comes out and you realize kageyama had grown up pretty isolated, was a kid who was always used to being alone and couldn’t connect to his peers except through volleyball, and even then most kids around him couldn’t relate to how passionate and invested he was in the sport (autistic kageyama is a hill i will die on). then he loses his grandfather: the one person he was closest to, his parental figure, volleyball mentor, someone he could count on to love him unconditionally and be there for him

all of which gives you more insight into perhaps why kageyama went that far in his dictator ways in middle school because he didn’t have his grandfather to be there as his moral guidance anymore, but i think says so much more about why he became the “goody two shoes” setter in high school, gives more context to why he went to such lengths to appease his teammates. not only was kageyama also traumatized by kitaichi and the complete abandonment he experienced from his teammates–the only type of relationship he was able to have with his peers– but by that point he was just scared to lose anyone else and thought appeasing his teammates was the only solution to avoid the same experience

like in the end kindaichi and kageyama were just two kids who were both hurt and struggling to navigate all these complex emotions. they were on opposite ends of the king of the court experience but ended up basically in similar positions working through similar hurt

it’s just the way they had both deeply internalized their own wrongdoings in the incident and those two scenes where they both looked upon the other’s team and wondered, why couldn’t i have that?

“With you, who will be gone tomorrow....”

Ah yes it’s not really something THAT angsty, no one die per se lmao.

Do yall remember that after timeskip Kunimi stays in Miyagi while Kindaichi is off to Saitama to work? It’s like almost an hour by shinkansen for Kunimi to go to Kindaichi’s place or vice versa. They have been together for so long, it’s hard to imagine one without another by now. But that’s simply what growing up means.

Growing up doesn’t mean growing apart you see. They still hang out, they still stick to each other’s hip in sensei’s timeskip that we just, you know, forgot that they are miles apart.

I myself don’t have good experience with long-distance relationships, but with these two, I have a strong feeling that they will be fine.
