I just had a revelation about The X-Files, taking heavy inspiration from The Avengers. Doctor Scully's middle name is Katherine.
Also Fox Mulder is named for an animal - one which gives insight into his character. Granted, there are slight differences but, I think Carter was being pretty blatant about where he got the ideas for his main characters.
Saw someone say that The X-Files was the first TV show to feature a man and woman as partners and equals, even developing the female character as a competent and respected scientist whom the man explicitly and openly admires for her brilliance and her strength, and...my children, The Avengers did it first. Like...that's the plot of the show.

Fans of The X-Files should know that its creator, Chris Carter, has said The Avengers influenced the characterisation of Mulder and Scully. I think Scully was supposed to be based on Emma but, personally, I see more of Cathy in her. I didn't originally see Mulder as anything like Steed but, having re-watched The X-Files recently, I think his sense of humour is similar to Steed's. Some of the other writers must have been Avengers / New Avengers fans too, as the plots, or protagonists of some episodes are similar.

I love how Diana plays it suddenly serious, when he sits down. Steed's demeanour is casual and genial but, she recognises the depth of the emotions beneath that façade. He's trying to gauge the situation with Beresford and see if she's really interested in him and she's been playing a bit of a game with what she thought was playful jealousy. In this moment I think she realises that her flirting with Beresford does really hurt Steed and what that means for their relationship.
Steed, literally boiling over with jealousy: I'm JUST THOUGHTFUL.

And she definitely snacked on his neck in that doorway scene from Escape In Time.
I love their casual intimacy.

There are many co-stars who look like they have a close friendly relationship, or who are able to promote the close relationship of their characters, in photo shoots, despite not being close irl. However, Patrick and Diana's photo shoots are the only ones I've ever looked at and gone, "Yeah, they were lovers."

His genuine smile suggests he may not have been expecting the line delivered in quite that fashion; he was so enamoured of her.

Patrick has a moment where a fond expression crosses his face. I imagine he's thinking, "She's doing it again, on camera. Does she want everyone to know."
Yes, it is a 60s TV show and so they're constantly in a pretty tight frame, but I have seen many 60s TV shows and no one climbs their co-stars like these two.

Ooof that look, that casual step into his personal space and her air of superiority. She might as well have a big neon sign, flashing "back off bitch."
Wherein Emma climbs up Stede's chest just so everyone knows where they stand.

I wonder if the script called for Diana to play it this way, or she chose to, because she knew what Emma's reaction would be to another woman muscling in on John Steed.
Emma's general rule is that no other woman is allowed to get closer to John Steed than her.

I've only just noticed the step into his personal space and the tap on the chest. Steed does that thing where he gets twice as charming, with a sarcastic smile, before asserting himself through physical means. Like in A Sense of History, where he almost breaks Duboys' arm. I get the feeling, had Varnals pushed his luck here, he'd have ended up on the wrong end of Steed's umbrella. Then Steed tops it off with a display of chivalry towards Emma, just to emphasise the point that she's his equal and Varnals needs to treat her as such.

Steed: *Trying desperately to control his temper.*
Emma: I'm gonna cut a bitch.

Just interlocking fingers, pressing themselves together and snogging. As one does with one's platonic friend. I'd love to know who concealed his face; as if we'd believe it's anyone but Patrick. And her expressions... well. She's one very happy young woman here. It was love.

I think this is the first time I've paid close attention to Diana's acting in this moment; drawing on her own experience, no doubt and the experience of every woman everywhere (even today). That moment when you're being belittled by a bloke acting "The Big Man" and you retreat for a second, perhaps in surprise, or hurt, before the anger rises and you think, "I don't have to put up with this sh*t." And you start thinking of inventive ways you can take the misogynist down a peg or ten and metaphorically (or literally) knock his block off.
Of course, whilst Steed doesn't need to save Emma from Varnals, his support means a lot and reinforces her role. However tough us women find things today, I can imagine it was a thousand times harder, being taken seriously, amidst the patriarchy, over half a century ago. Thus, the support of a feminist male would have been very welcome.
I deeply enjoy that Steed asks Mrs. Peel to "go easy" on Varnals, eager to find out how Varnals reacts to her, and then is immediately more annoyed with Varnals over his treatment of her than ever man has been annoyed.

Meanwhile, Emma is all, "Yeah, I've dealt with dudes like this my entire life."
